(English Version below)George Town Diary, 23.-30. August 201827. August, 2018: »On the edge of the historic center, the visitor can imagine what would have happened to old George Town if it hadn't been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2008. (Just take close look at the photographs!). What did happen to old George Town because of that privilege is a constant influx of tourist with a crave for Western-style cafés, serving cappuccino, cake and bagels. It always feels very odd to me that people fly thou-sands of airmiles, producing tons of CO2 to end up in a joint, of which they have plenty at home.«(Peter Bialobrzeski)Über die City DiariesDie Stadt zu Beginn des 21. Weitere Bände erscheinen in loser Reihenfolge.About the City DiariesThe city at the beginning of the 21st century is the major theme of Peter Bialobrzeski's City Diaries. In the project, started in 2013 and so far comprising of 19 volumes, he has been investigating whether the pre-conception of a city, a product of prejudices, personal observations and what is conveyed by the media, can be transformed into a specific image. Whether Wuhan or Wolfsburg - Bialobrzeski is interested in the cultural differences increasingly concealed by globalization, which he makes visible by means of a seemingly objectifying aesthetic. Current political and social developments are also reflected in Bialobrzeski's images and diary entries. The format and page count of all titles are identical. This systematic approach allows for a comparative view of a wide array of different urban situations. Further volumes will be published intermittently.

This book studies the impact of public expenditure allocations in achieving income equality goals in Malaysia. The book examines the initial functional and institutional distribution of income across different institutional agents and sectors and evaluates the impact of the public expenditure policies in reducing the inter-ethnic and rural-urban disparity. Since Malaysia has made enormous progress in eliminating poverty, the authors suggest that a change of emphasis in the public expenditure policy may now be called for. They present evidence on the importance of public expenditure in improving income inequality and examine the initial functional and institutional distribution of income across different institutional agents and sectors. The development of the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) model that presents both economic and social statistics in an economy can be served as a useful tool of this work. The SAM model is used to evaluate the impact of the public expenditure policies in reducing inter-ethnic and rural-urban disparity.A comprehensive source of information on how to deal with inequality economic challenges, the book will be of interest to economists and researchers on Southeast Asian Studies.

Wild People is the story of one man's experience living among a rare and almost extinct culture. The Iban are a primitive people who live in the hilly jungles of Borneo'whose peaceful existence of hunting, fishing, tending their crops, and worshipping their gods belies a fierce legacy of head-hunting. This, however, is no ordinary work of travel anthropology"if Andro Linklater takes us into the heart of this world he also take us into our own, and the clash of cultures he documents produces not only memorable insight but ample and sharp-witted humor. The author's sympathetic effort to truly understand this utterly alien and exotic culture is where the book's greatest value lies. Far up the Katibas River, where the maps grow vague, he finds a traditional longhouse agreeable to his three-month stay, and a world that makes no distinction between the physical and spiritual, animal and human, waking time and dream time. He learns how to interpret the oracles of birds, signs and omens of every kind, what gods to sacrifice to for a bumper rice harvest. He takes part in a gawai kenyalang, a rare and complex ceremony performed once in a man's lifetime to ensure his prestige in this and the spirit world. He becomes involved"even in matters of the heart. Seduced and beguiled by the culture he has come to respect and admire, the author asks himself a genuine question: Why not? It seems to work for them"they are not only handsome and brave but happy as well.Wild People gives us a palpable sense of what it might be like to live in a primitive culture. In the tradition of such English travel writers as Colin Thubron and Redmond O'Hanlon, it also tells of a personal journey"the story of one civilized and slightly cynical man's brief and poignant romance with a dying culture.
