Despite the existence of valuable commentaries on some Classical spring poems, this area of study has been insufficiently explored. This book investigates, through the detailed analysis of the specific spring poems (Catullus 46; Horace Odes 1. 4, 4. 7, 4. 12; Palatine Anthology 9. 363, 10. l, 2, 4, 5, 6, 14, 15, 16 and Ovid Tristia 3.12), the evolution undergone by this genre from the third century B.C. to the sixth century AD. From the spring poems of the Palatine Anthology to Ovid's Tr. 3.12, the genre has known a remarkable evolution. Despite the apparent simplicity of the theme, the authors of the Classical spring poems have reached high levels of sophistication in the way they have succeeded in transforming a relatively straightforward poetic form into a complex and sophisticated genre. Since this series of poems is more than a simple literary parlour game, but constitutes a genre on its own that illustrates, through its major features, typical aspects of Classical poetry, the analysis undertaken in this book gives the Greek and Latin spring poems the critical attention they fully deserve.
"Approaches Hellenistic sport from the perspective of the athletes and horse owners and their sponsors. Analyzing victory poems as commissioned work, the book reveals the wider social and political impact of athletic achievements at the level of the polis, the region and the empire"--
The Mystical Madmen is about Spirituality, Mysticism and Existentialism present in the writings of Kahlil Gibran and Paulo Coelho. It compares the writings of Kahlil Gibran and Paulo Coelho in the eight books selected, analyses their thoughts on spirituality and existentialism and the context for their mysticism. After a brief introduction to these three concepts, it discusses Kahlil Gibran¿s writings and its impact of Paulo Coelho. It had been claimed by many that Coelho is a Gibran of our times. This book examines and analyses if there had been any influence on Coelho of Gibran that can entitle him to be a modern-day Gibran.
"Offers intermediate Greek students a reliable, up-to-date introduction to Plato's most influential work. Plato's Greek is not difficult, but his ideas have generated considerable controversy. Book I serves as a dramatic introduction to them, with its memorable confrontation between Socrates and the sophist Thrasymachus over the nature of justice"--
This monograph is intended for students the vocabulary of the language and the word-formation mechanism serving it. As a system, vocabulary is in constant motion, and the English language has a complex and diverse system of word-formation means. New lexical units are created by means of all language levels - phonetic, morphemic, lexical-semantic and syntactic. Word-formation means, there are three main types of word-formation: phonetic, morphological, semantic. The monograph is a collection that contains theoretical and practical material for work with students in European groups, according to the current program.
In this book, pragmatics was born within the framework of linguistics and its concept is first used by Morris who defines it as the study of the relationship of signs. Thus, the dominant trend in twentieth century linguistics began with Ferdinand De Saussure's Cours de Linguistique Générale. Thus, in order to characterise pragmatics, it must be situated within the Saussurean dichotomy between language and speech. Thus, the reflection to this problematic will go through each of the following stages of this research: - defining the pragmatic approach of discourse - defining the communicative style of Sarkozy - defining the different forms of discourse.
Reconsidering the ancient world through the lens of New Materialism From archaeological sites to papyri and manuscripts, we experience the ancient world through its material remains. This materiality may be tangible: from vases to votive offerings and statues to spearheads. It might be the text as object or the object in the text. The New Materialisms have transformed the way we conceive of the material world - but how and to what extent - might they be applied to ancient cultures? Books in this series will showcase the potential applications of New Materialism within Classics, giving us a new way to look at ancient texts, ancient objects and ancient world-views.
This volume demonstrates that by the time the public performance of classical drama ceased at the end of antiquity the ideals of Jews and Christians had already been shaped by it in profound and lasting ways. It is suitable for those working on ancient Christianity and Judaism, and ancient drama and literature.
We present two Bulgarian manuscripts from very different periods and written in very different historical and political circumstances. But they both have in common the intention to legitimize the existence of their nation and the inalienable right to their language and culture. These are the works: O pismeneh¿ "On Letters" by ¿ernorizec Hrab¿r, from the 10th century, and Istorija slaveno-bolgarskaja "Slavic-Bulgarian History" by Paisij Hilendarski, from the end of the 18th century. The important lesson we can draw from reading these curious manuscripts is that we should never be ashamed of being what we are, nor try to be or pretend to be what we are not.
The corpus of Palaiologan romances consists of about a dozen works of imaginative fiction from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries which narrate the trials and tribulations of aristocratic young lovers. This volume brings together leading scholars of Byzantine literature to examine the corpus afresh and aims to be the definitive work on the subject, suitable for scholars and students of all levels. It offers interdisciplinary and transnational approaches which demonstrate the aesthetic and cultural value of these works in their own right and their centrality to the medieval and early modern Greek, European and Mediterranean literary traditions. From a historical perspective, the volume also emphasizes how the romances represent a turning point in the history of Greek letters: they are a repository of both ancient and medieval oral poetic and novelistic traditions and yet are often considered the earliest works of Modern Greek literature.

"The period of the first Ancient Greek peoples, the Mycenaean civilization, from the 1700s BCE, through to the Greek Dark Ages and the rise of Classical Antiquity more than a thousand years later is one of profound significance for Western modes of thought. The first cities, works of art, the stories of Olympic Gods and heroic warriors in classical literature find their origins in the traditions of this era."--
