So, why Bauhaus?100 years ago, the teaching of architecture and urban design at the Bauhaus responded to rapid changes in society and their impact on the built environment. The ambitions and methods of the historical Bauhaus can still inspire us in the present day: Today, facing global climate change and human migration, these themes are more pressing than ever. Through the Emerging City Lab Addis Ababa (ECL-AA), the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) at Addis Ababa University established a joint lab. Combining innovation and social responsibility through experiments with building materials, practices and planning technologies beyond cultural, social, and disciplinary boundaries, this publication shows educational and research projects that emerged from the collaboration. From oral and literature accounts, and retold stories, of a family's ancestral journey as far back as the authors could trace, it became clear that these oral stories in diaspora communities complement the recorded history of their ancestors and those accounts from several colonizers they encountered. The oral stories emphasized being free people pursuing self-determination and navigating a world reshaped by warring empires and growing forms of colonization since the 15th century. This family's stories are parts of those from the early communities of: i) free people in Africa, the Iberian peninsula, and Jamaica, ii) indentured communities who seized the first opportunity to pursue self-determination, and iii) freed people from the 18th century Atlantic slave trade. Collectively, they stood as a lighthouse for freedom across several generations in early West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Cape Verde Island), Angola, Jamaica, British American colony, Early Canada, and Britain. In Freetown, the family's ancestral history in the last 200 years extended to empowering themselves and others in parts of Sierra Leone and beyond.This edition attempts to employ indigenous written sources that are now giving credence to oral narratives from within communities we are connected to around the world. The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC's armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the "Second" and "Third" worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.
