From the gritty streets of Boston, Massachusetts to the warm and secure blankets that wrap up his children at night, John Cole has provided us with a collection of stories and prose that capture the essence of everyday working-class life. From young adulthood to fatherhood, John Cole uses his own words to paint vivid emotional pictures of the blue-collar realism that exists for most of us during the earlier stages of the twenty-first century. The weight of his words and the significance of his stories are delicate and powerful, and readers will handle these stories with the care and gentle reserve they ask for.
Some of Australia's best political writing: a dazzling chronicle from the editor of The Saturday PaperDrawn from the first ten years of The Saturday Paper, these editorials tell the story of a country in trouble. They are a penetrating account of the people who have led Australia, fusing character studies with political insights and unvarnished rage. Taken together, they form a sparkling portrait of a lost decade. This is writing that is witty, curious and sharp-eyed.'These editorials are my guiding light in these terrible times.' -Marcia Langton AO
A rollercoaster of fragile relationships, greed, power struggles, and Hollywood's darkest secrets, focusing on a ripped-from-the-headlines scandal: the abuse of young men looking for a break.
From the beginning of lockdown in 2020, the online newsletter of Cupar Old Parish Church became a focus for the church's life. I offered to join the small team who prepared weekly Reflections for it in support of our minister Rev Jeff Martin. Jeff followed a study guide, We Take the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren in many of his weekly sermons during the first year of restrictions. I followed his lead with digressions to respond to what was happening at the time; for some Saints' Days, and to consider some Bible passages from the Common Lectionary.I have never been much of an original thinker, preferring to recycle other people's insights. I always kept a large notebook of snippets and ideas for sermons and have dipped liberally into it in preparing these articles. Unfortunately, I didn't always note where I had found these bits and pieces and apologise if I have failed to attribute any of my quotes to their authors.Above all, my prayer is that we might all find renewed joy and hope as we walk the road of Christian faith together following this time of acute pandemic.
"Family Matters uncovers the decades of advocacy which reshaped same-sex sexuality in American law and society. It will speak to readers interested in queer rights, social movement advocacy, and legal studies, while further contributing to current discourse and ongoing battles over LGBTQ+ rights today"--
Bingué, The Other Side of the Medal is the first novel by Famahan SAMAKÉ. This story coldly analyses the problem of African emigration in Europe with its trail of broken homes, shattered lives and dreams in tatters. It also paints, without concession, not only the communitarianism that is the trademark of Western society, but also the clash of cultures and the abject and senseless terrorism that targets the West. This novel also denounces the religious syncretism that characterises many Africans who find it difficult to forsake the spirits and idols of their forefathers despite claiming to be Muslims or Christians. Excerpt : ''He even asked me whether I was comfortable in the handcuffs, otherwise he would loosen them up much further. How can one ever be comfortable in chains ? I thought that only the Kunta Kintés and demons suffered such fate, but certainly not me. I was in chains and I was leaving my house in shackles, flanked by two policewomen who framed me right and left. I was under arrest. I was in chains. I was in shackles like I often read about it in French literary works by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Alexandre Dumas. I was in shackles. Yes, it was not a dream, not even a nightmare. I had just been shackled up. And it was real. How did my son feel as he witnessed that scene ? I never knew. We never talked about it. It was the law of the omerta. We acted like it never happened. Someone said that great pains are ever so silent. It was most likely true. In any case, I concede they were right all along".

The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army's initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. Presented principally from the point of view of the commanders in Baghdad, the narrative examines the interaction of the operational and strategic levels, as well as the creation of theater level strategy and its implementation at the tactical level. Volume 1 begins in the truce tent at Safwan Airfield in southern Iraq at the end of Operation DESERT STORM and briefly examines actions by U.S. and Iraqi forces during the interwar years. The narrative continues by examining the road to war, the initially successful invasion, and the rise of Iraqi insurgent groups before exploring the country's slide toward civil war. This volume concludes with a review of the decision by the George W. Bush administration to "surge" additional forces to Iraq, placing the conduct of the "surge" and its aftermath in the second volume. This study was constructed over a span of 4 years and relied on nearly 30,000 pages of hand-picked declassified documents, hundreds of hours of original interviews, and thousands of hours of previously unavailable interviews. Original interviews conducted by the team included President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretaries of Defense Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and every theater commander for the war, among many others. With its release, this publication, The U.S. Army in the Iraq War, represents the U.S. Government's longest and most detailed study of the Iraq conflict thus far.
