This publication was initiated during a Type Design brief at Zurich University of the Arts. Students were tasked to select an typeface published before 1999, to which they had a strong emotional connection, either positive or negative. Parallel to articulating personal emotions, students also collected information about the designer, type foundry, historical context and technology of production that led to the creation of the typeface. Then they proposed a contemporary redesign or revival. The design methodology was flexible, allowing for a range of approaches: from a classic revival in which the designers used their skills to digitize a typeface that was unavailable (or available in poor quality only), to a different design interpretation of the typeface. It was also possible to use the historical typeface as a mere formal or conceptual inspiration for a new creation. In different ways, then, the students investigated the definition, role and limitation of a revival typeface today.Their research and design processes are reflected in the texts which the students present in this publication, along with specimen pages for their typeface. The texts grew out of a two-weeks writing class at Zurich University of the Arts called Designers as Writers. Considering a broad range of writing practices pursued by designers long before (and also while), academic thesis writing took hold at art schools, from Jan Tschichold, Anna Simons and Hildegard Korger to Adrian Frutiger and Otl Aicher, from Hans-Rudolf Lutz and Fiona Ross to Zuzana Licko, Dexter Sinister, Alphabettes and more, the students familiarized themselves with (various combinations of) four basic approaches to writing: autobiographical, programmatic, historiographical and theoretical. These approaches informed daily writing exercises and staged impromptu readings in the evening, and eventually they also informed, to various degrees, the texts about the typefaces.

Lux Guyer (1894-1955) was the first female architect to establish her own studio in Switzerland in 1924. One of her key designs is the Obere Schiedhalde, a single-family home above Küsnacht near Zurich. Completed in 1929 and temporarily occupied by Guyer and her family themselves, it is a variation on her legendary SAFFA-Haus of 1928. Between 2012 and 2018, the building itself as well as the surrounding garden were extensively and carefully restored by Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein together with Sven Richter, co-founder of Richter Tobler Architects in Basel. Working in close collaboration with the Canton of Zurich's office for the preservation of historic monuments, they also called in experts for a historically conscious overhaul of the building's interior design, color scheme, furniture, and garden design. Together with the current owners, the architects made it their mission to not only preserve this significant architectural monument of Swiss Modernism, but also make it accessible to the public through this book. Conceived by graphic designers Ludovic Balland and Annina Schepping, it offers an in-depth documentation of the renovated Obere Schiedhalde. Some 200 photographs of the house, garden, interior details, and furniture, as well as historic and newly drawn plans are supplemented with texts in German and English that tell the story of the building and the entire undertaking of its restoration.

Sexuelle Praktiken zwischen Menschen und Tieren verursachten in der Frühen Neuzeit Furcht und Entsetzen. Als teuflische Sünde und Verbrechen wider die Natur wurde "Bestialität" auch im reformierten Zürich mit der Todesstrafe geahndet. Vor Gericht sagten Zeuginnen und Angeklagte über das Unaussprechbare aus - und beschrieben ihre alltäglichen Beziehungen zu Tieren. Bullen, Kühe, Stuten und Schafe waren ein grundlegender Faktor bestialischer Konstellationen. Sie lieferten Vorbilder sexueller Handlungen und wurden selbst zum Objekt der Begierde. Auf der Grundlage einer historisch-semantischen sowie praxeologischen Analyse von Gerichtsakten verortet diese Studie Bestialität in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen individueller Körperlichkeit, dörflicher Lebenswelt und religiös-obrigkeitlichen Normen.

Dieses Büchlein war konzipiert als Textbegleitung zu einem 'Ich-Museum', das Gegenstände aus meiner Kindheit und Jugend in Albisrieden ausstellt. Das Projekt entstand nach dem Tod meiner Mutter im September 2020, als ich bei der Räumung ihrer Wohnung viele mir vertrauten Dinge von damals wiederfand. In meiner Nostalgie konnte ich sie nicht wegwerfen, sondern liess mich von ihren Geschichten zurück in die 60er-Jahre führen. Museum und Büchlein wurden die benötigte Trauerarbeit zum Tod meiner Mutter. Im Frühjahr 2022 entstand das Künstlerduo 'Saller + Maurer' (siehe dazu Kunstplatz.com) am Soodring 34 in Adliswil, dort fand mein kleines Museum eine erste Heimat.

This issue of Pamphlet deals with the perception, visualization, and representation of distinct parts of Zurich and offers different ways of representing the city - both above ground and underground - by analyzing five unique sites, each of which represents a multifaceted, layered and spatially complex system: the ETH main building, Zurich main station, the Jelmoli department store, the Sihl River, and the Schanzengraben and adjacent Old Botanical Garden. Each site is approached from two perspectives: the visual aesthetic perspective of student works that accurately visualize the site through point cloud modelling; and the perspective of experts who have a special relation to the site or knowledge of the applied methods and technologies, thus contributing insights from urban history, city planning, architecture, and landscape architecture.
