Although a relevant number of projects digitizing inscriptions are under development or have been recently accomplished, Digital Epigraphy is not yet considered to be a proper discipline and there are still no regular occasions to meet and discuss. By collecting contributions on nineteen projects - very diversified for geographic and chronological context, for script and language, and for typology of digital output - this volume intends to point out the methodological issues which are specific to the application of information technologies to epigraphy.The first part of the volume is focused on data modelling and encoding, which are conditioned by the specific features of different scripts and languages, and deeply influence the possibility to perform searches on texts and the approach to the lexicographic study of such under-resourced languages. The second part of the volume is dedicated to the initiatives aimed at fostering aggregation, dissemination and the reuse of epigraphic materials, and to discuss issues of interoperability.The common theme of the volume is the relationship between the compliance with the theoretic tools and the methodologies developed by each different tradition of studies, and, on the other side, the necessity of adopting a common framework in order to produce commensurable and shareable results. The final question is whether the computational approach is changing the way epigraphy is studied, to the extent of renovating the discipline on the basis of new, unexplored questions.

The applied research project from University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe, and resulting publication, The Archive as a Productive Space of Conflict examines archival practice and its spatial repercussions in an open conversation among over 80 artists, architects, writers, theorists, educators, designers and others. What are the spaces involved in making archives productive? Conventional archives tend to define themselves through content-specific accumulation of matter, subscribing to an existing order. The structure of archives has not evolved in response to its cumulative model. A productive archive would offer an open framework which actively transforms itself, thus allowing for the constant production of new and surprising relationships and new perspectives on archival practice. Reste fordern die Institution des Museums heraus. Es sind Kippfiguren, die Zuschreibungen öffnen und damit an Überschreitungen der taxonomischen, disziplinären, architektonischen und institutionellen Grenzen des Museums mitarbeiten. Sie sind überall anzutreffen - im Ausstellungsraum genauso wie im Depot, im Labor genauso wie in der Verwaltung. In jedem dieser Kontexte stehen jeweils andere Formen des professionellen Selbstverständnisses, des Wissens und des praktischen Umgangs zur Verfügung, die den Status von Resten determinieren. Der Band trägt dazu bei, Begriffe wie Rest, Abfall, Spuren, Ränder im Kontext des Museums zu präzisieren und für Debatten in Konservierung, Kuration, Kunstgeschichte und Museumsanthropologie neu zu bewerten.

Wien gehört zu den großen Kunst- und Kulturmetropolen Europas. Neben den kaiserlichen Sammlungen sind hier vor allem seit dem 17. Jahrhundert und bis in die Moderne hinein zahlreiche bedeutende Sammlungen entstanden. Die hier versammelten Biografien behandeln Vizekönige, Staatsminister und Botschafter, Händler, Kaufleute und Bankiers, aber auch Komponisten, Maler, Kunsthändler und Kunsthistoriker. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf heute weniger bekannten Sammlern, die anhand zeitgenössischer Quellen erstmals umfassend dokumentiert werden. Zu den zentralen Fragestellungen gehören die Motivationen der Sammler und ihre Erwerbungsstrategien ebenso wie Aufbewahrung und Präsentation der Objekte. In Summe leisten die Biografien einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer differenzierten Kulturgeschichte des Sammelns und positionieren Wien zugleich in einem gesamteuropäischen Kontext.

Protecting, healing, or punishing-people of various eras and origins have attributed such powers to the sculptures that are being presented together here for the first time: be it the sculpture of the Mangaaka from what is today the Republic of Congo, the protective goddess Mahamayuri from China, or the Maria on the globe from Southern Germany. Forty-five objects created between the fourth and the nineteenth century from two museums in Berlin provide a vivid testimony to the ever-present need for protection and orientation when dealing with individual or social crises. They represent the existence of an invisible world of gods, spirits, or ancestors, and create a connection between this world and a "different reality." As a result of how they are presented in museums, their context of use is, however, often lost-a situation that is reflected on by the authors of this book.

Francis La Flesche (1857-1932) lebte zwischen zwei Welten: Als Umonhon (Omaha) kämpfte er für deren Rechte, als Wissenschaftler erforschte er seine eigene Kultur. Er gilt als erster indigener Ethnologe Nordamerikas und steht stellvertretend für die vielen indigenen Akteur/-innen, ohne die ethnologische Sammlungen niemals entstanden wären. Die meisten dieser Personen sind uns nicht mehr bekannt, denn im Zentrum stehen bis heute die europäischen und nordamerikanischen Sammler. Francis La Flesche bildet eine Ausnahme: Seine Arbeit gibt einen Einblick in indigene Handlungsmacht und deren Widerstand gegen Rassismus und Kolonialismus sowie die aktive Teilhabe am Handel mit Objekten. Das Buch präsentiert zum ersten Mal La Flesches Aufzeichnungen über die Gegenstände, die er der 1894 ins heutige Ethnologische Museum nach Berlin gesandten Sammlung beigab - ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis seiner erfolgreichen Bemühungen, die Kultur der Omaha für künftige Generationen zu bewahren.

Francis La Flesche (1857-1932) lived between two worlds: as an Umonhon (Omaha), he fought for their rights, and as a scholar he researched his own culture. He is regarded as the first indigenous ethnologist of North America and stands representatively for the many indigenous protagonists without whom ethnological collections would never have come into being. We are no longer familiar with most of these individuals, since the focus until today has been on European and North American collectors. Francis La Flesche is an exception: his work provides insights into indigenous agency and their resistance to racism and colonialism as well as their active participation in the trade with objects. The book presents La Flesche's records of the objects, the collection of which he contributed to what is today the Ethnological Museum in Berlin in 1894-an impressive testimony to his successful efforts to preserve the culture of the Omaha for future generations.

The third international conference on "Archaeology and Conservation along the Silk Road" was met with as much enthusiasm as the earlier ones, with participants joining from near and far. The historic city of Tabriz, which once was the melting pot for cultures across the Silk Road(s), now as venue of this conference from 14-16 November 2018, facilitated dialogues to re-live, re-exchange and re-search the impact that Silk Road has had from then to now. Albeit a century-old topic of academic discourse, the Silk Road(s) continues to open up variety of new disciplinary and regional fronts; included in this volume. The Research Institute for Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Iran, collaborated with the Nanjing University, China, and the Institute of Conservation, University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria, for this congress, which saw plenty of scientific studies on material heritage and their resultant significance in shaping the lifestyle and trade in different regions along the Silk Road(s).

THE DISSIDENT GODDESSES' NETWORK is an interdisciplinary research project based on the important finds of female figurines from Lower Austria's early and prehistoric period. It identifies issues connected to these finds and examines them from today's perspective: What do these finds mean? Do they have an effect on the position of women today? What does the soil tell us, how are archaeology, economy and ecology interlinked? What recording systems could be used to map the things that the territory reveals? What future could be sketched out, what demands would have to be made? This book presents the results of a scientific-artistic research phase of the project that lasted several years, concluding with an exhibition at the State Gallery of Lower Austria in Krems entitled READING THE EARTH. Det røde atelier, malet af den franske kunstner Henri Matisse i 1911, skulle vise sig at blive et af de mest indflydelsesrige værker i den moderne kunsts historie. Maleriet, som har tilhørt MoMA siden 1949, forestiller kunstnerens atelier i den parisiske forstad Issy-les-Moulineaux, fyldt med hans egne kunstværker, møbler og brugsgenstande. Matisses radikale beslutning om at male det meste af værkets flade over med rødt har fascineret generationer af forskere og kunstnere, men vi har stadig meget at lære om maleriets tilblivelse og historie. Denne rigt illustrerede bog er udgivet i forbindelse med udstillingen Matisse: Det røde atelier, der samler de malerier og skulpturer, man ser afbildet på maleriet, for første gang siden de forlod Matisses arbejdsrum. Bogen præsenterer os både for velkendte værker som Le Luxe (II) ( 1907-08) – et af de tre malerier fra SMK’s samling, der ses i Det røde atelier – og mindre kendte værker, hvis placering først for nylig er blevet opklaret. I et fortællende essay af Ann Temkin, The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture ved The Museum of Modern Art, New York, og Dorthe Aagesen, Overinspektør og Seniorforsker ved SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst i København, spores Det røde ateliers historie, lige fra værket blev bestilt i 1910 over dets første udstillinger og ejere og frem til maleriets ankomst til MoMA. Gennem banebrydende forskning og nærlæsning af værket, ændrer Matisse: Det røde atelier vores forståelse af denne milepæl i det 20. århundredes kunst. Derudover rummer publikationen en artikel om konservatorernes opdagelser i forbindelse med tekniske undersøgelser af Det røde atelier og en detaljeret portfolio over de udstillede værkers historie og proveniens. Publikationen er udgivet i forbindelse med udstillingen Matisse: Det røde atelier, organiseret af The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1. maj –10.
