My Body is a Battlefield offers a comprehensive insight into the work of the Ukrainian artist Maria Kulikovska, born in Crimea in 1988. Already in her early works she deals with patriarchal structures and the absence of female subjectivity in Ukrainian art. With the annexation of Crimea and the ensuing war, questions of identity and belonging and the themes of border and violence become leitmotifs of her artistic practice. Kulikovska's sculptures are exact copies of her body or individual body parts. Made of unusual materials such as ballistic soap, grease, or epoxy resin, the casts are subject to processes of aging and decay, are modified, transformed, and deconstructed. In her watercolors and drawings, created as series, for example on medical reports and authority forms, she designs bodies that resist the markings and boundaries of the paper as much as the bureaucratic constraints and gender fixations formulated there. Her ceramics-molds of severed limbs and replicas of bodily fluids-are forms of rage and despair in the face of the brutality and horrors of war.Kulikovska shows her body as a site of conflicting emotions and traumatic memories, as a contested arena of ideological attributions and warlike aggression; she asserts herself, drastically and dramatically, against gender and sexual norming, against violence and subjugation.The illustrated book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Francisco Carolinum in Linz, the artist's first solo exhibition in the German-speaking world.

Einer der ungewöhnlichsten Protagonisten der Fotoszene im RheinlandChristopher Muller, der seit 2009 eine Professur für künstlerische Fotografie an der Folkwang ­Uni­versität innehat, ist seit Mitte/Ende der 1990er Jahre war er einer der ungewöhnlichsten Protagonisten der Fotoszene im Rheinland. Mit Kunstpreisen etwa des Kunstfonds Bonn 1995 oder der Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung 2004 hat der in London aufgewachsene, am Camberwell ­College of Arts & Craft, der Slade School of Fine Art in London und schließlich an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf ausgebildete Künstler in der Szene einen Platz gefunden. Dabei hat ihn stets seine spezielle Heran­gehensweise ausgezeichnet, die ihn von den KollegInnen unterscheidet. Er kommt vom Stillleben, und hat mit seinen seriell wirkenden Objektfotografien in den 1990er Jahren ent­sprechend für Aufsehen gesorgt. Seine jüngst ent­standenen fotografischen Collagen sowie die zusehends einen breiteren Raum einnehmenden Aquarelle thematisieren das Verhältnis der Dinge zueinander und zugleich unsere Sicht auf sie. Die Bilder verdeutlichen, dass die BetrachterInnen in ein komplexes Gewebe von Gefühlen, Vorlieben und Abneigungen ­verwickelt sind, die auch von ihren Erwar­tungen und Handlungen im Alltag bestimmt werden.

Hannah Höch (1889-1978) moved between differing worlds: as an editorial assistant with a major Berlin-based magazine publisher, and as the only woman who could hold her own in the German capital's vibrant Dada scene of the 1920s. Höch broke with the traditions of representation and vision. Her works dissected a world marked by the catastrophe of the Great War and an intense consumer culture, and reassembled it in revolutionary, poetic, and often ironic ways. Höch kept to her artistic means and her poetic-radical imagination, shimmering between social observation and dream world, even in the post-WWII period. Scissors and glue were the weapons of her art of montage, of which she was a co-inventor. Cutting and montage also shaped film, still a new medium in the 1920s, which strongly influenced Höch's art: she understood her assembled pictures as static films. This richly illustrated and expertly annotated book explores comprehensively for the first time Höch's fascination with film and the visual culture of the modern industrial age. It demonstrates how montage evolved in a field of tension between artistic experimentation, commercial exploitation, and political appropriation.
