This publication is devoted to an extensive description of the pneumopteria which are also referred to as cloud whales or cloud sponges, and occasionally, in scientific language, as pneumospongia. Often, in older treatises, they have been termed celestial leviathans. These gigantic, cloud-like creatures, which seemed to float in the air without movement or stimulation, could reach several hundred meters in size. In all likelihood, they are extinct today. The species was, however, frequently observed in historical times and has been described by numerous cultures and in many different contexts. With his research findings, Roland Boden provides the first thorough introduction to the nature, appearance, and behavior of the pneumopteria and surveys the history of their exploration and description. In his treatise, defined as fictional research, Boden uses quotations, photographs, reproductions, reconstructive drawings, and computer-generated images, combining real scientific and historical facts with completely fictitious elements to create a parallel reality that cleverly and artistically questions contemporary perceptual processes.
© The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.
In an age of fast-changing technologies, offering numerous ways of generating images, Elias Wessel challenges the conventional definition of a painting: he creates his "paintings" without resorting to traditional painting techniques and eschews classical genres. The artist's abstract paintings - which in many ways show connections to painterly practices - are in fact made up of photographs and digital material.Wessel, for example, takes photos of smartphone displays to produce monumental abstract compositions from the fingerprints left behind on them. He also documents his scrolling behavior on social media platforms by using long-time exposure to superimpose accessed profiles and their contents: the result are visual and decontextualized structures. His other works present painterly-looking details of damaged displays: where else in the digital world can we experience such a close relationship with the canvas?Above all, the quality of Elias Wessel's working method lies in the way he links the fundamental discourses in the history of photography with the latest technology and current social debates. In so doing, he skillfully observes and questions the social consequences and instruments of digitalization.
I do believe a lot of what I draw comes from within. The images of Indian Princesses and their horses have always been a part of my life. From a small child, I understand those feeling all so well. I lived with the love of many horses in my lifetime. They are still here in my heart and soul. So it comes very easily to me in an image. The love between a girl and her horse. I hope that comes across in what the one looking at the Image, sees and feels. Animals, Birds, Symbols, they all just seem to me to belong together. I hope the Love I have for the Native American Indian, comes out in my art. Enjoy.

The publication revolves around the polarized nature of the resident-host encounter. The space of residency generated between artist and host leads to the establishment of a temporary community whose "episodic" nature corresponds to the nature of the "postmodern" world. From the perspective of the host, the presence of the artists resembles an episodic plot, where each part - despite the uniqueness of the artistic interventions - is to some extent an open form, in fact, it can be built anew each time. Like film characters, artists assume their roles in subsequent episodes. Creating such a space in a social structure requires trust, openness and a strong sense of empathy, as well as a willingness to share one's resources. From the outset, the editors did not aim to present an analysis of the operation of individual spheres of artist residencies, but rather to compile in dialogue a polyphonic publication that illustrates the nuances of residency work and artists' experiences, as well as the unstable constellations of artist residencies with its open-ended structure. Artist residency programs can serve as a model for dealing with the ever-changing contemporary world and societies. All this makes it possible to fulfill the dream of a world where there is a balance between acceptance and separateness. This world offers authenticity, permanent change and constant transformation.
Interview with Christine Sun Kim: Matthew Hyland.

Inspiration is everywhere, in all instances of city life. In this visual diary of Barcelona, a real treat for sketchers and lovers of the Catalan capital, urban sketcher Lapin creates a graphic narrative of his metropolitan surroundings to communicate a highly expressive and deeply personal vision of the city. Using vintage accounting books that he finds in flea markets, Lapin, armed with nothing more than a sketchbook, a fine liner pen, watercolor paints and his folding stool, depicts the images and phenomena of everyday city life - busy streets, bustling cafes, iconic monuments, graffiti-splashed walls, sidewalks thick with people. A sketching technique that pays meticulous attention to detail, his particular use of color and striking und humorous perspective distortions define Lapin's journalistic-like visual style. Telling evocative stories through his drawings, he also provides a fresh look at some of the urban transformations the city is currently undergoing, including green hubs and squares, parks and gardens. The artist defines himself as a "mobile illustrator", a kind of modern-day itinerant urban explorer and documentarian who immerses himself in his environment (in this case, Barcelona) and records what he sees. The result is a graphic reportage of the city's culture, from its emblematic architecture down to the ornamental concrete slabs used to pave many of its sidewalks and nearly everything else in between.
