Named of The Hollywood Reporter's "100 Greatest Film Books of All Time, the definitive biography and photographic record of George Hurrell, the famed photographer who shot the most iconic images of classic Hollywood legends, now featuring new and upgraded images. George Hurrell was called the “Rembrandt of Hollywood.” Before his arrival, movie star portraits were “soft focus” and undistinguished, derivative of the Main Street USA portrait salon. Hurrell instituted a sharp, dramatic look. The vibrant, temperamental artist was an original, loved by the subjects he glamorized. For these performers, a Hurrell portrait was the passport to immortality. In this paperback edition of photographer and historian Mark A. Vieira’s original volume, the author offers a wealth of new images to illustrate a compelling narrative. Featuring rare and never-before-published portraits and behind-the-scenes shots, George Hurrell’s Hollywood covers Hurrell’s entire career, from his beginnings as a Los Angeles society photographer to his finale as the celebrity photographer who became a celebrity himself. More than 400 pristine images showcase his work with Hollywood icons from 1929 to 1992. Vieira's text recounts the artist’s life, from his childhood to the heyday of his career as a starmaker, through untold stories of his fall from grace and eventual comeback. Filled with previously unseen photos of the biggest stars across more than six decades and abounding with fresh insight, this volume is not only the ultimate showcase of the trailblazing artist’s work but an indispensable treasury of Hollywood lore.
Robert Frank carefully entwined his life and work, yet the man behind the camera always remained enigmatic. Goin' Down the Road with Robert Frank is a rare insider's look at Frank's world by his longtime friend and assistant (both in and out of the darkroom) Brian Graham. Graham's photos, made between 1979 and 2019, take us behind the scenes of Frank at work-on location for his 1987 film Candy Mountain, photographing Allen Ginsberg, inspecting contact sheets-and into his private life: laughing with his wife June Leaf, exploring a thrift shop, even fixing the roof of his Bleecker Street studio. Candid and spontaneous, Graham's images are often arranged in filmic sequences that create a sense of events unfolding in real time. Framed by nostalgic notes (by Graham as well as novelist and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer) and an introduction by Ai Weiwei (another of Graham's friends from the Lower East Side in the 1980s and '90s), these images form an intimate and original portrait of Robert Frank, a central figure both in Graham's photography and the history of the medium.

The long-term Photographic Observation Schlieren is a much-recognized unique research project that documents urban development in Switzerland. Over a period of fifteen years, a photographic record of building activity and urbanization processes was conducted to demonstrate how these are altering the character of a typical Swiss suburban community. The chosen example was the town of Schlieren, bordering the city of Zurich to the west, whose population grew from 13,000 to 20,000 residents during the observation period of 2005-20. At Sixty-nine locations throughout Schlieren, pictures were taken under identical conditions every two years that show the changes in the spatial interplay of buildings, streets, and green spaces. Simultaneously, series of topical detailed photographs were produced that focus on individual objects and tell of the appropriation, design, and aesthetics of habitats, such as store fronts, building entrances, playgrounds, parking entrances, etc. This two-volume book brings together the results of this spectacular research. The Archive volume features the entire body of the eight images taken at each of the sixty-nine sites to visualize the deep changes Schlieren has undergone during these fifteen years. The Essays volume combines the topical image series with essays that offer in-depth examination of the study's subject, detailed analyses and interpretations, and interviews by expert authors from various disciplines. Winner of the DAM Architectural Book Award 2023.

Tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being." As an actor who became a film star, Newman repeatedly tapped into his times and in doing so redefined what movie stardom could be. Newman was a new kind of movie star, bringing a particular authenticity, intensity and sensitivity to his performances. Throughout his career, Newman was extensively photographed: these images enriched film audiences' connection to him as a cool and graceful presence both on and off-screen. Milton Greene, Douglas Kirkland, Lawrence Fried, Terry O'Neill, Al Satterwhite and Eva Sereny are amongst the photographers who worked with Newman on and off-set across his career. From early stage work with his wife, Joanne Woodward, to his love of racing cars, to the essential 1980s drama Absence of Malice to the great success of the new western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the cult favorites, Pocket Money and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, Newman's movies were an essential part of American culture. With comment and contributions from the photographers, Paul Newman: Blue Eyed Cool, gathers together portraits, stage, racing and on-set photography -- including never before seen images -- in a celebration of an actor who was always... cool.
