Malanka is Ukrainian American visual artist, Yelena Yemchuk's sixth photobook. Like all bodies of work by Yemchuk, Malanka is personal, feminine, surrealist, and touched by a spell. The eponymous tradition is a pre-christian, heavily incantatory folklore ritual that takes place on January 14, the Old New Year in the Julian calendar. It is celebrated by ethnic Romanians in western Ukraine, and its origins are largely unknown. Yemchuk traveled to Crasna (Krasnoilsk in Ukrainian) in 2019 and 2020 to document the night-long festival. In essence, Malanka is about driving out winter and stimulating spring into existence, an ancient custom reminiscent of Persephone's return in Greek mythology. While photographing in Crasna, Yemchuk also made a companion short film, which premiered during her solo exhibition at the Ukrainian Museum in New York, in 2023. The film stars Ukrainian artist Anya Domashyna and the American actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Yemchuk, who was born in Kyiv and emigrated to the US when she was eleven years old, always invigorates her works with a particular notion of the in-between, meaning that she gently and joyfully plays on the ridge between fiction and reality; between the grand beauty of 1960s cinema and the social and built environments of post-soviet realms; between her Eastern European heritage and her daily life in New York. Through Yemchuk's gaze, places and spaces organically and dramatically blur, creating dreamscapes in which her subjects experience some form of metamorphosis. Malanka includes a poetic essay by Romanian cultural journalist Ioana Pelehatai.
This little book is for all travelers and cake lovers. It was not planned - it just happened through our first year in Luxembourg, filled with so much other joy and ecitement - all the enticing cake shop windows a little sampling - and because the cakes were so delicious and eye catching we started to take some pictures. We tasted all the cakes at our own expense, and quite a lot were downed with no documentation at all slightly to our regret when finally putting the story together. We are very happy to share this with you and hope you will enjoy Luxembourg and its pâtisseries!Pkease forgive the primitive pack phptp! However, the picturs are authentic we have savored all the cakes.
This is a photographic study of javelinas that have made frequent visits to my property. In addition to the photographs, I made observations about their actions. They are interesting creatures and they behave like no other.
During World War II, navies developed camouflage for their ships. Applying it to both vertical and horizontal surfaces, they reduced visibility and confused the identities of their ships to the enemy. Maritime artist Malcolm Wright, author of popular books on British naval camouflage schemes in World War II, now turns his attention to the ships and aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army from 1932 to 1945. Many schemes included in this volume are difficult to find without intensive research, making this a unique and valuable resource. The book covers every ship type from battleship to the smallest auxiliary, including the riverine craft that fought in China, all the ships in the separate fleet operated by the Imperial Japanese Army, and three special bonus pages describing camouflage schemes for selected hard-to-research ships from other navies. The timespan covered actually goes beyond 1932-45 and includes developmental milestones for each ship and class, from the 1914 construction of the battlecruiser KONGO to the 1946-47 repatriation service of the surviving vessels and their subsequent transfer to victorious navies. At 288 11" x 8.5" pages with half-inch margins and 9-point type, this book offers almost double the content area of the previous volumes in the series, which were 196 10" x 8" pages each, with a somewhat challenging 7-point font. This expansive and reader-friendly layout allows for numerous full-page spotlight views of important and interesting ships and planes, for a total of 952 images and captions. The durable case laminate jacket and 70-pound premium paper assure a long-lasting and pleasant physical experience. The captions combine construction, refit and service histories with sharp personal assessments of ship performance, accompanied by plank-level illustrations of the color schemes applied to ships and planes. Since sadly most pictures of World War II are in black and white, this book is a delight for anyone who wants to visualize the war as it actually occurred, in color. With its unparalled depth of technical detail and breadth of coverage, it is a must-have for students of naval history, the war in the Pacific, wargaming, and ship and aircraft modelling. The highly readable captions combine construction, refit and service histories with sharp personal assessments of ship performance, accompanied by plank-level illustrations of the color schemes applied to ships and planes. Haas' most cherished and personal project-originally conceived as an audiovisual slideshow-is recreated here in stunning color that will delight his numerous fans as well as anyone interested in Kodachrome photography. Three decades after its completion, Haas' most personal and least-known project is now available for the first time in this exquisitely produced book. Presented in a clean and spare design, this volume features reproductions of superb quality that allow readers to appreciate his mastery of color, light, and composition, and his ability to capture the mystery of daily life. For this collection Haas drew on images made in all phases of his career from 1952 to 1984, and, despite the title, most of these photographs are not abstract but rather clear, focused, well-exposed images of recognizable surfaces from the observable world around him: crumbling paint, graphic road markings, fabric, liquids, detritus, decay, and torn posters. David Campany's eloquent introductory essay lays the groundwork for a deep appreciation of the slideshow which, in book form, can be savored and understood in an entirely new way.

The first monograph of a rising star in the world of fashion photography and film, this dazzling volume is filled with lusciously colored images that capture Moses' eye for beauty and talent for storytelling. Gabriel Moses was only eighteen when he received his first commission-from Nike. Since then the self-taught British Nigerian photographer has been in enormous demand, with clients that range from Louis Vuitton and Burberry to Chanel and Vogue, and from stars such as Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and Skepta. Gorgeous full page reproductions capture Moses' uniquely atmospheric vibe-marked by deep colors, rich textures-as well as his startling ease with his subject, be it music, fashion, or sports. A series of essays include a foreword by Moses, touching on his own ideology and practice; Federico Sargentone's insightful exploration of Moses' work; contributions and personal accounts by Matthew Williams, Ciesay, Clint, Samuel Ross and Slawn, among others; and a series of in-conversations, one with Skepta discussing the totality of life; and the second with Nick Knight exploring the depths of photography. Touching on every aspect of his work to date, including a number of previously unpublished images, this stunning and contemporary feeling monograph, designed by Hassan Rahim, dives deep into Moses' visual language and highlights his profound connection to family, community, and the culture around it.

A hallmark of late 18th Century Turkish style of warfare was an initial attack by thousands of massed Cavalry as the main offensive force on the battlefield. Regarded as the best in Europe, and feared with some justification for their sword mastery and valor in battle, European tactics changed in the face of the Turkish Cavalry threat. The Kapikulu Ocaklari: Standing Army's Cavalry consisted of Sultan's Household Guard Regiments, Zirkhli: Cuirassier - Armoured Sipahi, Sipahi Light Cavalry or Lancers; Deli; Mameluke, Bedouin and Tatar Light Cavalry. New Order Army military reforms of Sultan Selim III (1789 till 1807), had by start of the Napoleonic Wars added several Provincial Mounted Regiments of Uskudar Barracks Trained Mounted Infantry, and ten Regiments of Paid Mounted Regulars, providing Light Cavalry or Lancers. This book also covers Cavalry weapons, equipment, and battle tactics.
