Arne Jacobsen and his architecture represent a line of work that spans all of the characteristic developments of the 20th century ranging from Neoclassicism to the International Style by way of Nordic Functionalism. Spanish architect and author Félix Solaguren-Beascoa has published a comprehensive study of Jacobsen's work, divided into three volumes from 1926 - 1971. This publication is structured similarly to Le Corbusier's Oeuvre Complète and includes previously unpublished material, offering a detailed look at Jacobsen's career.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was first and foremost famous for his furniture. In the 1940s, he broke with the established furniture tradition and designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design. At the Milan Triennials in the 1950s, he was awarded no fewer than five gold medals and won international acclaim for his furniture. But Finn Juhl was not only an excellent furniture designer: he worked with all aspects of the architect's profession. He gained international recognition as an interior designer for his work on the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. As an exhibition architect, he was the man behind the major showings of Danish applied art abroad which created the concept “Danish design" and paved the way for the Danish furniture industry's export triumphs in the 1960s. This book presents a full-length portrait of Finn Juhl as an artist designer, architect and cultural figure.

Portrait of a Founder. The Story of Wilhelm Hansen and Ordrupgaard tells the story of Danish insurance director and art collector Wilhelm Hansen (1868–1936). Drawing on the Ordrupgaard museum’s extensive collection of photographs, letters and not least art, the book paints a vivid portrait of the man behind Ordrupgaard and his wife, Henny (1870–1951). How did their lives unfold? And how did they build the splendid art collection now on display at Ordrupgaard in North Zealand, Denmark?Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark (b. 1950) was director of Ordrupgaard from 1995 to 2023. The author and editor of many books on art, she has also curated major exhibitions such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, Bernard. Friction of Ideas (2014), At Home with Hammershøi (2016) and Anna and Michael Ancher. Together and Separately (2023).

This issue of Slanted is not about war. It's about amazing people from the creative industry in and from Ukraine, trying to live a "normal" life, working super hard and giving their best, showing that culture and design cannot be separated. Slanted Magazine #43 is dedicated to the Ukrainian design scene. Despite the impossibility of visiting studios on location as in previous issues of Slanted Magazine, extensive contacts in the Ukrainian design scene helped to put together this diverse and complex magazine. This selection of works by Ukrainian designers, typographers and graphic designers was carefully chosen from 1,500 submissions - they exemplify the independence and resilience of Ukrainian design.

In August 2023, Slanted Publishers is going on a trip to Tbilisi, Georgia and Yerevan, Armenia. The aim is to explore the impact of the war in Ukraine on the local culture and design scene. Numerous conversations and interviews provide deep insights into people's lives and work.The introduction is by Wojciech Górecki and Krzysztof Strachota, both respected experts in the region who work for the Center for East European Studies (OSW) and head the department for Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The photo series were contributed by students from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, who have maintained close links with Georgia for several years.

Han er er møbelsnedker og formgiver og underviser på Sveriges fineste møbelsnedkeruddannelse på Malmstens i Stockholm (en campus under Linköping Universitet). Andreas Nobel argumenterer: ”Man undervurderer et hvert fagområde, når man tilgår alle felter på samme måde frem for at anerkende, at det kræver mange års træning at kunne sit fag.For eksempel kræver det en livslang gerning at opnå et højt niveau i filosofi.På samme måde kræves års arbejde for at opnå et højt niveau i håndværk, design eller kunst”.Han stiller sig tvivlende overfor om man i samme liv kan opnå så tilstrækkeligt højt niveau på begge felter, til at filosoffen kan tilføre noget til kunst og design og vice versa. Ikke desto mindre ser man mange akademiske faggrupper udtale sig med vægt om både kunst, design og håndværk.”Hører og læser man den slags skal man vide at det ikke er det faglige forfatteren forholder sig til men filosofien”, argumenterer han. In the bookazine, in the article titled ‘In collaboration’, architect Desislava Lynge says, ‘An interior can be magical, whether it is minimalist or chaotic or has books and art from floor to ceiling, as long as it reflects the people who live there.’ She adds that if she were to point to a single key feature, apart from the life inside a house, it would be the influx of daylight. Light is also a key topic for lighting designer Fie Paarup, who has launched a successful production of unique curtains sewn from vintage and surplus textiles. I met with her to talk about curtains and the life inside a house. Textile is also the natural choice of material for Sia Hurtigkarl and Tanja Kirst. Each in their way, from their respective points of view and with very different expressions, they both work with woven rugs as their medium. In addition to rooms, furniture, curtains and rugs, stucco, ceramics and glass, the upcoming issue of the bookazine maintains a parallel focus on how we become who we are and how we engage with and speak about ourselves, each other and our practices. You are invited to join me on a trip to Öland to visit a very special school founded in 1957 by Carl Malmsten and his wife, Siv Malmsten. Now, as then, the school teaches ceramics, textile, wood and landscape architecture. I had some inspiring talks with Professor Andreas Nobel about Carl Malmsten. Nobel, who is a cabinetmaker and designer, teaches in Sweden’s finest cabinetmaker’s programme at Malmstens in Stockholm (a campus at Linköping University). Andreas Nobel says, ‘You will underestimate any subject area if you approach every field in the same way and if you fail to acknowledge that mastering a given field takes many years of training. For example, it takes lifelong practice to attain a high-level mastery of philosophy. Similarly, it takes many years of practice to attain a high-level mastery of craft, design or art.’He questions whether it is possible in a single lifetime to attain a sufficient grasp of both areas to have philosophy inform art or design, and vice versa. And yet, it is common to see scholars from a wide range of academic fields speak with great authority about art, design and crafts.‘When you hear and read these comments, you need to bear in mind that what they are addressing is not the subject matter itself but the philosophy of it,’ he argues. ‘To a philosopher, art is a philosophical problem; to the artist, art is a possibility, while designers and craftspersons look for solutions.’ In the bookazine, you will also meet ceramicist Louise Gaarmann, golds applied artist Sarah Hurtigkarl and architect Erik Brandt Dam, among others.

Felice Rix-Ueno studierte bei Josef Hoffmann, einem Mitbegründer der Wiener Werkstätte (1903-1932). Inspiriert von der japanischen Formensprache bildete sie einen eigenen Stil aus, der sich in besonders fantasievollen Stoff- und Tapetenmustern, Mode- und Wohnaccessoires sowie Wandmalereien ausdrückte. Nach ihrer Heirat mit dem japanischen Architekten Isaburo Ueno übersiedelte sie 1926 nach Japan. Hier entstanden gemeinsame Arbeiten, die viel Beachtung fanden, wie etwa die Star Bar in Kyoto, die 1932 in der berühmten Ausstellung Modern Architecture im New Yorker MoMa gezeigt wurde. Felice Rix-Ueno, die schon in der erfolgreichen MAK Ausstellung Die Frauen der Wiener Werkstätte prominent vertreten war, wird mit diesem Katalog erstmals außerhalb Japans eine substanzielle monographische Aufarbeitung zuteil.
