Emilie Flöge, Mathilde Flögl, Jacqueline Groag, Fanny Harlfinger-Zakucka, Yella Hertzka, Else Hofmann, Hilda Jesser, Maria Likarz, Madame d'Ora, Pauline Metternich-Sándor, Bertha Pappenheim, Marie Reidemeister-Neurath, Lisl Weil, Vally Wieselthier, Helene Wolf und Berta Zuckerkandl
You've seen their work-but have you seen them? Black designers have been working in every major industry but, for the past decades, have not been given the spotlight anywhere near to the extent of their white counterparts. This vibrant and wide-ranging book, full of photographs and illustrations, aims to correct that oversight, bringing a century of Black designers and their work into focus. Organized into three sections focusing on Fashion, Architecture and Graphic Design, Prempeh uses the pioneering work of key figures from the twentieth and twenty-first century to explore important aspects of how Black design has been perceived within culture and society. From the necessity of the side-hustle, to interrogating the value placed on Black design, from reclaiming traditions, to exploring how design can be a form of protest, this book brings to the fore the stories of figures such as Ann Lowe, Dapper Dan, Norma Sklarek, Francis Kéré, Emory Douglas and Liz Montague to unpick what it means to be a Black designer.

This publication comprehensively documents Heike Hanada's internationally acclaimed first work by means of drawings and photographs. The transformations during the construction process are excellently reflected in Andrew Albert's photographs. While the monumental cube positions itself precisely between the city and the landscape as an abstract, minimalist sculpture, it opens up unexpected vistas into the museum's topography on the inside via cascading staircases and voids. The relevance of all building materials conveys a consistent reminiscence of spacious industrial halls. They meet the most complex museum requirements remarkably well and thus simultaneously cite the workshop character of the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919.

HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 7 invites you on a visit to an architect, a design firm, a blacksmith, a brazier, a bricklayer, a carpenter and a thatcher, among others, and shows you how bathroom tiles can be made with a high content of crushed discarded bricks. Initially, there will be a cap on CO2 emissions per square metre per year for new builds over 1,000 m2, and from 2025, the requirement is going to apply to all new construction.’Indeed, I had heard about it, and yes, I was interested in scaling up and taking a look at architecture and construction; in fact, I had already begun. At this point in the process, it was quite clear to me that there are many interests at play in construction, refurbishment and renovation and that dealing with architecture and construction is about much more than just scaling up. Above all, construction is big business – and a huge factor in relation to the above-mentioned and increasingly ubiquitous climate accounts. Where there is a will there is a way, and not just when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint. In my interviews we take a broad look at materials, aesthetics, working processes, working life experiences, lived life experience and education. Sonia Delaunay's work appears today as fresh and relevant as ever. The modernist pioneer's ingenious color patterns dissolved the boundaries between visual and applied art. She further developed her painterly experiments in fashion, fabric patterns, interior design, book and object art, merging geometric abstraction and the sculptural qualities of pure color.Maison Sonia Delaunay is dedicated to Sonia Delaunay as a mediator between artistic-philosophical design and the beauty of everyday life. It particularly focuses on new research into textiles, fashion, and interior design. Drawing on never-before-published sources, the publication examines her international collaborations with entrepreneurs and artists, and illuminates how she redefines the relationship between art and industry in the process to design for a visionary, modern life.SONIA DELAUNAY (1885, Odessa-1979, Paris) was trained in St. Petersburg, Karlsruhe, and Paris around 1900, and initially established herself as a portrait painter before dedicating her work to abstraction around 1913. With her husband Robert Delaunay, she experimented with the concept of "Simultané" based on the use of intense color contrasts. During a stay in Portugal and Spain in World War I, she expanded her art to the objects of life. Back in Paris in the 1920s, she combined her ambitions in painting and design with her fashion and furnishing house "Sonia Delaunay." Her influence continues to this day, her patterns being as modern as ever.

Alfredo Häberli, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1964 and has been working from Zurich since the 1980s, is one of the world's most widely acclaimed product designers. Major international brands such as BMW, Camper, Georg Jensen, Iittala, Luceplan, Moroso, Schiffini, or Vitra are among his clients, for whom he has designed furniture, lamps, objects, tableware, or even entire interiors. Häberli's work has been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe and has earned him many awards over the years. In the first of this book's two volumes, Häberli looks back at the people, places, and objects that have influenced him and shaped his ideas and creative process. He tells of his visits with the great Italian designers, the British and American role models influencing him, and about inspiring exchanges with colleagues such as Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, or Patricia Urquiola. Moreover, his encounters with visionary entrepreneurs, and the places, locations, and objects that forged his understanding of design come into focus through text and images. For the second volume, Häberli invited thirty personalities from his circle to ask him one question each, which he answers frankly and in good humor. These personalities include fellow designers, architects, critics, journalists, and creative directors such as Stephen Bayley, Tyler Brûlé, Francesca Molteni, and Alice Rawsthorn.
Susanne Bartsch has been living in New York since 1981, where she has created a dazzling Gesamtkunstwerk through the creation of her iconic looks and legendary parties. As an impresaria, artist-agent, and big-hearted, open-minded hostess, she moves virtuosically at the intersection of fashion, make-up, activism, art, music, and performance. In a career as interior designer, researcher, author, and teacher that has spanned more than five decades, Verena Huber has engaged profoundly with the issues of living and staying. To this day, she continues encouraging people to question spaces and objects and to put them in new contexts. Uncompromising in her approach and always looking beyond national borders, she has been hugely influential in contemporary Swiss interior design. Since the early 1980s, artist Beat Streuli has used photography and video to create works of strong visual force. Although cityscapes form the backdrop of his images, it is always people rather than architectural or structural elements that are in his focus. Streuli's images have made him one of the world's foremost exponents of street portraiture. Switzerland's Federal Office of Culture has awarded the 2022 Swiss Grand Award for Design to Susanne Bartsch, Verena Huber, and Beat Streuli. This book introduces each of them through a concise text and interview as well as a brief biography, illustrated with images from their archives.
What do the work processes of a neurosurgeon and a painter have in common? Applying the notions of "Design", "Gestaltung", and "Formatività", this book sheds new light on processes of formation and transformation in the material world we live in.Scholars from the fields of history, philosophy, psychology, media, and cultural studies question established processes of giving form, while artists, designers, engineers, and scientists describe their creative processes. This book provides its readers with an overview of the spectrum of "philosophies of making" and invites them to reflect on their own creative process, its possibilities, and associated responsibilities to the environment, and ultimately to express these in action. There has never been a more urgent need to develop a new relationship between matter and form. . Discussing and expanding the definitions of "Design", "Gestaltung", and "Formatività".
Selbstverständlich is the German expression which, in the mind of Albert Kriemler, creative director at AKRIS, best encapsulates the aesthetic ideal that he wishes to accomplish with his fashion designs. For Kriemler, the embodiment of natural modernity is selbstverständlich, evident in the wearer and also the use and functionality of the clothes.Taking the collections as waymarks, the book encompasses the entire one hundred years of AKRIS history and its location in St.Gallen, Switzerland. The unsurpassed quality of the fabrics and craftsmanship employed in the creation of Albert Kriemler's art-inspired designs is dedicated to the woman of today and tomorrow. She comes alive in her clothes, and with her body language and presence imbues them with identity. Jessica Iredale describes the uniqueness and forward-looking nature of AKRIS. Iwan Baan, photographer, illuminates with his photo essays the hometown and the inside world of the brand. The meticulous book design confirms the AKRIS mindset: selbstverständlich, naturally.

What ideas are currently energizing your architectural work and explorations? Why did these ideas become impactful while others did not? What role did mentors and peers play in the development of these ideas? What were your breakthrough insights or aha moments? What is next for you, and for the discipline and discourse of architecture? For this book, Mark Foster Gage has selected eleven of the most noteworthy and fascinating conversations from his year-long project of documenting the ideas of the next generation of designers who are revolutionizing the nature of architectural practice and theory today. This remarkable collection of casual, informative, and personal interviews engages fifteen architects as they reveal what made them who they are, what propels their architectural work forward, and what they anticipate comes next. A noted practitioner, tenured Yale professor, CNN design contributor, and respected insider of the international architectural scene, Mark Foster Gage has spent his professional life with many of the most important figures in architectural discourse and practice. With this book he focuses on an emerging generation of practitioners- approaching his subjects with a characteristic mix of insight, wit, and humor in a book that is consistently entertaining and informative as the architects open up in unexpected ways about their beliefs, work, lives and thoughts about where architecture, and they, are headed next.
" The definitive volume on Gaetano Pesce's incomparable life and career, as told in the artist-designer's own words In a category all his own, Gaetano Pesce is widely considered one of the most important, and elusive, creative figures of the last half century. Bridging numerous key art and design movements, while never belonging to any of them, Pesce's singular practice has remained steadfastly provocative, defying convention, utility, and good taste. Glenn Adamson, the acclaimed curator and writer, conducted the wide-ranging interview with Pesce on which this book is based, drawing out new stories and insights, as well as providing an introduction that thoroughly contextualizes Pesce's unique position in contemporary art and design. As postmodern design has become increasingly desirable, interest in Pesce has grown with renewed exhibition activity and critical attention, and his work has become even more valuable and collectible. In this long overdue summary co-published with Salon 94, Pesce looks back at his incomparable and wildly inventive career, recounting his life and practice in his own words. "
Ideas are not born alone. They come from a process to a large extent organized and rational but sometimes unconscious and magical. In this book we can enjoy and learn from the creative processes of great graphic designers and creative voices around the world. Here we can find impulsive design versus more cerebral design; radical and avant-garde design alongside poetic, childish, commercial, intellectual, subversive and socially oriented design. 26 designers from 15 countries show us their workspaces, their personal notebooks and their creative processes. They teach us the keys to understand what is behind those magnificent works that inspire, thrill, impact or invite us to action. In this book the creative process itself is inspiration, a unique guide to creativity with storytelling and lessons on how to live your best creative life.
