How design students learn sustainably How do I teach design? Why is listening so important? What can we learn from other disciplines and cultures and from each other? Answers to these and other questions are offered by Sven Ingmar Thies and his 24 interviewees, who are all united by a single wish: that their students should experiment, experience, and grow as designers. This book allows teachers of graphic design, design theory, game development, industrial design, and behavioral research from China, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Austria, and the USA to each have their say. The in-depth conversations are complemented by a comprehensive reflection and sample assignments. This is a book for teachers and students alike that offers insights into the experiences of others, as well as inspiration for teaching, learning, and professional practice. New teaching methods & practical suggestions A comparison of the experiences of 24 design teachers from six countries Fritz Frenkler, Gesche Joost, Rathna Ramanathan, Stefan Sagmeister, Kashiwa Sato, Erik Spiekermann, and others in conversation
What do the work processes of a neurosurgeon and a painter have in common? Applying the notions of "Design", "Gestaltung", and "Formatività", this book sheds new light on processes of formation and transformation in the material world we live in.Scholars from the fields of history, philosophy, psychology, media, and cultural studies question established processes of giving form, while artists, designers, engineers, and scientists describe their creative processes. This book provides its readers with an overview of the spectrum of "philosophies of making" and invites them to reflect on their own creative process, its possibilities, and associated responsibilities to the environment, and ultimately to express these in action. There has never been a more urgent need to develop a new relationship between matter and form. . Discussing and expanding the definitions of "Design", "Gestaltung", and "Formatività". Leading international theorists write about the relationship between matter and form. A collection of new texts and first English translation of key texts
This early work by William Morris was originally published in 1899 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. William Morris was born in London, England in 1834. Arguably best known as a textile designer, he founded a design partnership which deeply influenced the decoration of churches and homes during the early 20th century. However, he is also considered an important Romantic writer and pioneer of the modern fantasy genre, being a direct influence on authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien. As well as fiction, Morris penned poetry and essays. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
"Organized into chapters that explore the many ways to express dissent (RESIST!, VOTE!, STRIKE!, TEACH! and LOVE!), Strikethrough presents more than 120 signs, posters, publications and ephemera in vivid imagery and incisive prose. From the colorful affiches of the Paris '68 uprising to Memphis strike workers' placards to the Black Panthers' newspaper, this generously illustrated volume showcases the role of graphic design in a wide range of protest movements in the United States and abroad. Including selections from artists and art collectives such as Jenny Holzer, the Guerrilla Girls and Fierce Pussy, this book provides a broad and critical survey of the typographics of activism. Strikethrough also features 10 profiles on the designers behind the graphics--including Corita Kent, Emory Douglas and Ben Shahn--and a custom display typeface based on historical protest graphics by Trâe Seals, plus an introduction by activist and design scholar Colette Gaiter and an essay on type by Stephen Coles. Charting a typographic chant of resistance that spans more than 150 years, Strikethrough curators Silas Munro and Stephen Coles reveal how the message makes its way to the masses via marker, screen print, spray paint, collage and both physical and digital type, and how it calls on us all to craft our own demands for social change. âA compilation of leading Dada-influenced artists from around the world." â¿TRIBE LA Magazine The 2022 edition of the worldâ¿s premiere journal of contemporary dada writing and art continues a revolutionary approach to creation, inspired by the Dada movement. These days you hear a lot about NET ZERO, in reference to steps being taken to combat climate change. NET ZERO refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. At this time, NET ZERO is an ambition lacking absolute definition as corporate energy titans pledge distant adherence without clear or immediate commitments to act. In fact, these so-called âinnovativeâ? scions of wealth seem to not even be able to remove the layer of hot air greenhouse gases spewing from the mouths of the pundits and politicos pushing the affirmation of their endlessly pernicious promises. Enter NYET ZERO. With NYET ZERO, MAINTENANT 16 makes an artistic power grab using DADAâ¿in the form of original art, poetry, and writing aimed at exposing the hypocrisy of the engine-idle rich on recycled paper. We can change the now with art and thought. Otherwise, the future has NOTENTIAL. When the corporate powers that be control all of the energy resources, Art Becomes A Necessity!!! Or as Tristen Tzara put it in his Dada Manifesto, âDada Dada Dada, a roaring of tense colors, and interlacing of opposites and of all contradictions, grotesques, inconsistencies: LIFE!â?For the first time since debuting in 2008,  MAINTENANT 16 includes work from all seven continents on the planet, with more than 250 creators from 35 countries. The MAINTENANT series gathers the work of internationally-renowned contemporary Dada artists and writers. MAINTENANT 16 offers compelling proof that concepts of Dada continue to serve as a catalyst to creators more than a century later.  Contributors to Maintenant 16 include: Derek Adams ⢠Susan Shoshannah Adler ⢠Jamika Ajalon ⢠Ina Al-soqi ⢠Youssef Alaoui ⢠Linda J. Distinctive hand lettering is an essential skill for artists and designers. Deftly executed letter froms are a nearly forgotten art in an age of endless free fonts. Graffiti is one of the last reservoirs of highly refined, well practiced penmanship. The most reviled and persecuted form of Graffiti, the Tag, is seldom appresiated for the raw beauty of its skeletal letter forms. Most tags are removed immediately, and the casual viewer seldom has a chance to descern the difference between entry level and advanced hand styles. Within the pages of Flip the Script, author Christian Acker systematically analyzes the best graffiti writers from around the United States. Acker presents the lettering samples in a clean organized format, giving the material a proper formal treatment evoking classic typography books.
This compelling book takes the reader on a journey showing how each logo has come into being and the process revealing best practices for extending a logo into a complete brand identity system. Logos are becoming increasingly simple, to the point where you might wonder just how much simpler they can get. A subtle tweak to a logotype is starting to feel like too much design. The appeal of a simple logo is that it feels more honest. Using client case studies from renowned designers, this is a must-have book for any graphic designer, student or logo fanatic in a fully revised, updated edition containing interviews with graphic designers in which they share their creative processes and thoughts on how a successful logo should be developed.
Ideas are not born alone. They come from a process to a large extent organized and rational but sometimes unconscious and magical. In this book we can enjoy and learn from the creative processes of great graphic designers and creative voices around the world. Here we can find impulsive design versus more cerebral design; radical and avant-garde design alongside poetic, childish, commercial, intellectual, subversive and socially oriented design. 26 designers from 15 countries show us their workspaces, their personal notebooks and their creative processes. They teach us the keys to understand what is behind those magnificent works that inspire, thrill, impact or invite us to action. In this book the creative process itself is inspiration, a unique guide to creativity with storytelling and lessons on how to live your best creative life.
Die zeitlose Schönheit analoger Gestaltung und Typografie. Seinen Computer benutzt Christian Watson eher selten.
Probably no book designer of the twentieth century has had more written about him, his work, or his life than Bruce Rogers. He was, as his primary biographer Joseph Blumenthal observed, the ultimate "artificer of the book." His career as a working designer spanned six decades, but arguably his finest (and certainly his happiest) years were spent at Cambridge's Riverside Press where he took over from D. B. Updike in 1896 and where he remained until 1912, overseeing his own department and designing at least sixty titles for Houghton Mifflin's list of Riverside Press Editions. This small and elegantly produced volume contains an essay by Jerry Kelly outlining Rogers¿s tenure at Riverside, a checklist of all the work he executed there (for Houghton Mifflin as well as others), and twenty pages of reproductions displaying the full range of BR titles, specimens of printing that¿as he later wistfully remarked¿¿give me a definite satisfaction.¿
As one of the most important poster designers of our time, Swiss graphic designer Niklaus Troxler (born 1947) has devoted himself primarily to jazz posters. In 1966 Troxler organized the first jazz concert in his hometown Willisau in the canton of Lucerne. In 1975 he founded a jazz festival there that has since brought both established and innovative artists in Swiss and international jazz to the stage every year. Troxler designed countless posters for the festival as well as for the individual concerts, constantly reinventing himself. If his early jazz posters were still strongly oriented towards an illustrative comprehensibility, he soon emancipated himself from any narration. His virtuoso playing in the plane translates the character of experimental music and takes up ist improvisational gestures. Troxler's posters are synesthetic experiences and make music physically tangible. He is particularly interested in type, which he always designs in new ways and with different means, exploring the limits of legibility. On the occasion of Nikolaus Troxler's 75th birthday, this publication presents a selection of Troxler's legendary jazz posters. They are juxtaposed with his political manifestos in poster form, most of which he initiated himself, and with his commissioned works, including those for the Olma agricultural fair, the Knie circus and the Geneva International Motor Show.

Bogen udkommer i forbindelse med udstillingen ’How to Remind’ i Janus, Vestjyllands Kunstmuseum den 18.8. 2018.
