Honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Louis Kahn in March 1974, this facsimile edition exquisitely reproduces the notebook in which the renowned American architect sketched and wrote during his travels in the last year of his life.Anchored by a magnificent set of drawings illustrating the final design of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City (1973/74, posthumously completed in 2012), "Louis I. Kahn: The Last Notebook" provides an intimate glimpse into the architect's mind and design process. These private sketches and poetic reflections reveal Kahn's spiritual understanding of architecture as inclusive of our total environment and shed new light on the architect's influential philosophy for designing, building and conceiving architecture. The facsimile pays close attention to the material qualities of the original notebook, replicating its delicate, transparent paper. Made widely available for the first time, the publication includes transcriptions of Kahn's handwriting by Sue Ann Kahn and a commentary by architectural critic and historian Michael J. Lewis.Continuing on from earlier investigations into the importance of drawing in the iconic architect's work at Lars Müller Publishers, "Louis I. Kahn: The Last Notebook" replicates sketching in its most raw, pure form.
Quaintly set between rocky slopes and green meadows, the new architects' studio for Braunger Wörtz Architekten has been developed on the grounds of a former stone factory, which was shut down in the 1990s. The architects Berthold Braunger and Marcus Wörtz recognised the potential of the dilapidated building fabric and made it their mission to redevelop the remaining parts into an unusual architects' studio. The distinct shape of the four chutes and sorting areas for the terrazzo stone processing plant - a broad front featuring open gates and a timber superstructure with a sloped roof - has been incorporated into the design and reinterpreted. The result is a light office space with flexible floor plans, which clearly show the traces and history of the former use.The great care and meticulous attention to traditional, regional details can also be perceived in the conversion of the former home and trading station on the grounds of the stone processing plant. The atmosphere in the dining room "Wirtsstube", the visitor's apartment and meeting room is characterised by the carefully chosen materials, such as the whitewashed brickwork and the light silver fir finishes. The transformation of the quarry's simple industrial and vernacular architecture into an inspiring place for creative work is ground-breaking in terms of preserving building culture.
God's story. The most amazing story that has ever been told. It began a forever ago as God surveyed the endless space. He foresaw the future which was soon to appear. With the power of his will, he spoke. Angels filled the skies. Innumerable angels, all singing praise to their Creator. Imagine the angels' surprise when they heard God's words call forth numerous amazing creations--seas and creeks; trees and plants; mountains and valleys; animals, some so tiny they could hardly be seen, others massive. Then God paused. He would now create the crown jewel of creation, the reason for which he created the world. But this time he would not use words. He would form this creature using his own hands. God gathered some dirt, worked it with his hands, shaping it carefully. And then the moment came. God lifted the lifeless creature to himself and breathed his own breath into this first ever person, Adam. God's heart was pleased.God observed his world. He saw creatures of all sizes and shapes, male and female. God then paused, realizing that he was not yet done. He put Adam into a deep sleep and removed one of his ribs. Using it, he created a woman. When Adam awoke, he was amazed. A creature so like him yet different in such interesting ways. Together they explored their new world and each other, experiencing a thrill beyond description.God's amazing world, perfect in every way. That is, until...

Our recent past has been shaped by the repercussions of the pandemic (lockdown, isolation, distance, immobility, and so on). This turn of events has clearly influenced architecture: there is renewed demand for a more direct link with the outside, more proximity and more contact. The exhibition presents buildings and projects of this period (2020-23) and and discusses the circumstances under which they were created. This is more than a presentation of the results: this monografie also reflect on the unexpected occurrences that affected (or even, sometimes, explained) the work and the moment.Text: Toni Catany, Gabriel Ramon, Aldo Amoretti.
First comprehensive monograph about the tropical architecture of Godwin and Hopwood in Nigeria After studying at the Architectural Association in London, John Godwin and Gillian Hopwood moved to Nigeria, where they significantly shaped the country's architectural landscape for more than sixty years. When Nigeria became independent in 1960 following British dominance since the 19th century, the couple worked to create architecture that was site-specific, modern, and adapted to the climate relevant to Nigeria's aspirational political and economic policies. In this richly illustrated monograph, organised by typology, Ben Tosland examines Godwin and Hopwood's form of tropical modernism and illuminates its contemporary meanings and concluding with its relevance in times of the climate crisis. First comprehensive monograph about the architecture of Godwin and Hopwood Image-rich publication on one of the most important architectural practices for post-colonial, independent Nigeria Insightful findings for passive structural cooling techniques
Countering the phenomenon of sprawl in the often anonymous or chaotic urban periphery, the Oassis neighborhood in Lausanne takes a unique approach based on urbanity and hybridization. Located on a former industrial wasteland in the west of the city, Oassis reflects the compositional principles of the traditional city, while also engaging in the dynamics of ecological transition and climate resilience. This 'urban fragment' is both an urban fabric, compatible with future developments in the neighborhood, and an architectural object characterized by urbanity. The contemporary challenges of regenerating suburban areas are addressed here through diverse development programs and a profusion of gardens. Skilful combination of economic, ecological and social factors with high-quality architecture With unpublished documents and specially commissioned photographs
Are You a Model? explores the model as architectural tool and practice. The volume approaches architectural models not as categorical objects but through questions such as: What determines a model's functions and agencies? When in the design process does it unfold its power and when has it served its purpose? Based on nine overarching questions, the book brings together interdisciplinary voices from architecture, art history as well as architectural and curatorial practice, and software engineering. 31 contributions interweave perspectives from various disciplines and geographies, and reveal surprising affinities rather than seeking conclusive answers. Models are thus not classified according to time of origin, genre, or material, but rather understood as an epistemologically diverse practice.

The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Foundation. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.

Featuring exquisite photographs of every structure the architect designed from scratch or incorporated into a historical building, this elegant volume is as sumptuous and inviting as a Scarpa interior. Although he was not widely known during his lifetime, Carlo Scarpa has in the past-half century become one of the most revered of modern architects. His passion for integrating the ancient with the modern, the natural with the built environment, and the sensual qualities of glass, wood and stone, makes him the perfect architect for this moment, when the preservation of historic buildings and sensitivity to environmental impact is of supreme importance. As authoritative as it is attractive, this book features balanced introduction to Scarpa's work, weighing the opinions of both champions and critics of his work. More than 200 photographs and their accompanying illuminating texts capture the astounding beauty of Scarpa's designs, allowing readers to experience the interplay of light, texture and line in a way that is second only to viewing the works in person. Arguably the most definitive volume available on this consummate craftsman and artist, this book explores Scarpa's lasting legacy of meticulous craftsmanship, respect for tradition, and a deep understanding of the relationship between architecture, nature, and human experience.
