The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890-1954/1889-1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin's Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs.The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt's realized buildings. Ever since the Civil War the history of the Christian Church in England has been characterised by a threefold division, into the Anglicanism of the State, Roman Catholicism slowly being tolerated again and the fastest growing sector, Protestant Nonconformity. The great urban expansion of the 19th century saw the building of thousands of new chapels and meeting houses which form a significant part of the built heritage of our cities, towns and villages.This study covers Nonconformist buildings in the modern Metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, including the two cities of Newcastle and Sunderland. Taking World War II as its cutoff point, it identifies almost 900 chapels, only about a quarter of which survive today, with barely half of these still in their original use. They vary from the huge Town Chapels seating over a thousand to tiny 'Tin Tabernacles'. A surprising contrast emerges between the traditional Anglicanism of Newcastle (where the 1851 census shows that there was a chapel for every 1145 inhabitants) and the fervent Nonconformity of Sunderland (where there was a chapel for every 639).Nonconformist buildings are of importance both architecturally and as witness to social history. The dwindling of congregations means that many have been demolished or turned to other uses and they, and their builders, have not received the attention that they deserved. This book aims to be their Ebenezer - an Old Testament word for 'a stone of memorial' - and do something to redress that balance.

This book outlines, within the Italian national framework, the current and potential paths oriented towards a new concept of Architectural Heritage, through actions referring to Innovation and Experimentation and Protection and Transformation of the Architectural Heritage. The development of the themes is articulated in two sessions dealing with the aspects related to the analysis and mapping of Architectural Heritage to face the context of the current Climate Crisis and the development of projects and experimentations oriented to the Green and Digital Transition.The evolution of the concept of Heritage, as conceived by the United Nations 2030 Agenda and in the Green Deal and New European Bauhaus, aimed at constructing an inclusive and universally recognised definition to support supranational objectives of sustainable human development, gives rise to innovative strategies, methodologies and technologies that¿in a direction of mitigation, contrast and adaptation to climatechange¿allow for the safeguard, renewed management and a hope for valorisation of Heritage on a national scale. In this direction, the understanding of Architectural Heritage as a 'non-renewable resource' determines the need to activate design experimentation laboratories oriented towards regeneration, articulated and complex, which require, in order to respond to the challenges posed by our era, a sensitive and dialogic multidisciplinary vision of a holistic type. In fact, on the one hand, it is necessary to redefine the usability and management methods of built heritage through the adoption of digital, mobility, energy, ecological, social, green and blue infrastructures; on the other hand, it is necessary to introduce new qualitative and quantitative parameters and performance indicators, adequate to verify the validity of the implemented strategies in a perspective of adaptation to climate change, able to clarify contents, processes and tools to contrast future risks.The pursuit of these objectives refers to the innovation of training paths, professionalising procedures, administrative regulations, and public policies that involve citizens and the private partnership towards a different project qualification and empowerment of stakeholders, inhabitants, professionals, and clients. The Technological Project makes it possible to activate different interventions aimed at acting, in an integrated manner, on assets, context and communities, according to an approach that reinterprets them on a common score, as proposed by the European Next Generation programme in three priority aspects: digitalisation and innovation, environmental transition, increased resilience and social sustainability of national economies. In this scenario, the interventions aimed at outlining sustainable development actions will have to place these concepts at the centre in a harmonious vision that starts from the recognition and enhancement of the Architectural Heritage, recognising itas a fundamental asset of the territories.

This book intends to focus exclusively on anamorphic experiments in contemporary art and design, leaving an in-depth historical examination of its Baroque season to other studies. Themes, languages and fields of application of anamorphosis in contemporary culture are critically analyzed to make the reader aware of the communicative potentiality of this kind of geometrical technique. The book also has the aim to teach the reader the most appropriate geometric techniques for each of them, in order to achieve the designed illusion. Arata Isozaki (1931-2022) undoubtedly ranks among Japan's, and in fact the world's, most distinguished architects. He ran his own firm in Tokyo from 1963 and realized buildings in many countries, as well as holding teaching appointments at Columbia, Harvard, and Yale universities. He created a body of work that has constantly evolved and transformed over decades. His best-known designs include the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art in Fukuoka, the Shenzhen Cultural Center Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, the Berliner Volksbank office building on Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, the Palasport Olimpico in Turin, and the Allianz Tower (Il Dritto) in Milan. Isozaki was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1986 and the Pritzker Prize in 2019. This book is the first new monograph on Arata Isozaki in 15 years. The Barrack, 1572-1914 tells the little-known history of a building type that many people used to register as an alien interloper in conventionally built-up areas. The barrack is a mostly lightweight construction, a hybrid between shack, tent, and traditional building. It is a highly efficient structure that sometimes also proves to be extremely durable. Easy to erect and to take down, it is-after the introduction of railways and later motor vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries-also easy to transplant from one location to another. Originating as a standardized accommodation in the late 16th century, the barrack became a mass-produced utility of military and civilian mobilization in the 19th century, providing immediate shelter for soldiers as well as for displaced persons, disaster victims, or prisoners. The barrack played a decisive role in shaping the political space of modernity. Robert Jan van Pelt traces nearly 350 years of barrack history up to 1914. That year, in which the Great War broke out, proved to be a turning point in the perception of the barrack, away from pragmatic emergency shelter and towards sinister forced housing. Richly illustrated with some 250 images, van Pelt's book records the traditions of barrack design and the technological inventiveness that went into it in the late 19th century.

Pushing against the state planning of the time, it held that cities were at their best when they were driven from the bottom-up and when organic, unplanned processes were allowed to run their course, in a spontaneous "ballet of the street". Cities were at their worst, however, when the state stepped in, demolishing lively old neighbourhoods and erecting giant, sterile, empty "projects". This book uses the method of this ideology — walking — to test how true it actually is about the "capital of the twentieth century", New York City, with a brief interlude in the capital, Washington DC.The "projects" that are walked in this book range from cultural complexes in Manhattan to New Deal-era public housing developments in Brooklyn, Harlem and Queens, from the social experiment of Roosevelt Island to Communist housing co-operatives in the Bronx, from the union-driven rebuilding of the Lower East Side to DC's magnificent Metro.
