  • af Hanif Kureishi
    201,95 kr.

Hanif Kureishi already has introduced Americans to new fictional territory in his two films, My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, and in his novel, The Buddha of Suburbia. His latest screenplay, London Kills Me, which he describes as "a story about two guys looking for these shoes", returns viewers and readers to London streetlife and culture that only Kureishi could reveal. This collection includes his three screenplays as well as essays about the background of each film or life on the set or the hilarity of the Academy Awards in Hollywood. In addition, Kureishi has written about the Beatles--a comic commentary on class and culture in England. Together these essays and screenplays illuminate the remarkable imagination and wit of an extraordinarily acute and irreverent social analyst who has secured his place at the forefront of both the film and literary worlds with his uniquely recognizable voice.

This book is the first history of commercial television in regional Australia, where diverse communities are spread across vast distances and multiple time zones. The first station, GLV Latrobe Valley, began broadcasting in December 1961. By the late 1970s, there were 35 independent commercial stations throughout regional Australia, from Cairns in the far north-east to Bunbury in the far south-west. Based on fine-grained archival research and extensive interviews, the book examines the key political, regulatory, economic, technological, industrial, and social developments which have shaped the industry over the past 60 years. Regional television is often dismissed as a mere extension of ¿ or footnote to ¿ the development of Australiäs three metropolitan commercial television networks. Michael Thurlow¿s study reveals an industry which, at its peak, was at the economic and social heart of regional communities, employing thousands of people and providing vital programming for viewers inprovincial cities and small towns across Australia.

This Day That Year as a title came from a TV program of the 90s called "This Week That Year", that I used to watch on TV. I could relate to it very well as I remembered the release dates of most of the movies of the late 60s and early 70s and when the host spoke about it, I went down my memory lane and loved the experience. Once I became part of Facebook in 2009, I found a great forum to share my experiences of movie releases in Bombay then and now Mumbai. I found a lot of like-minded people who could relate to my post and shared their experiences and thoughts as comments. Quite a few of them encouraged me to share it with a larger audience and hence suggested publishing it. I never thought of doing it but when people kept telling me regularly to do it, I decided to give it a try, and here comes my experiences and thoughts of the movies released in the late 60s and early 70s. Hope you like what you read, though many of the statements would look repetitive. But do accept the experiences of a teenager who turns into a man in 1973.

    af Henrik Ibsen
    172,95 - 342,95 kr.

Ghosts: A Domestic Tragedy In Three Acts is a play written by Henrik Ibsen that explores the themes of family, morality, and societal expectations. The story revolves around the life of Mrs. Alving, a widow who is struggling to come to terms with her past and the secrets that haunt her family. The play is set in Norway and takes place in the late 19th century. The first act introduces the audience to Mrs. Alving's son, Oswald, who has returned home after many years of living abroad. The second act delves deeper into the family's history and the secrets that have been kept hidden for years. The third and final act sees the consequences of these secrets and the tragic ending that results.Throughout the play, Ibsen tackles controversial topics such as incest, sexually transmitted diseases, and the role of religion in society. He challenges the traditional values of his time and presents a bleak picture of society in which individuals are trapped by their past and unable to break free from the cycle of guilt and shame.Overall, Ghosts: A Domestic Tragedy In Three Acts is a powerful and thought-provoking play that continues to be relevant to this day. It is a masterpiece of modern drama that explores the human condition in all its complexity and remains a testament to Ibsen's skill as a playwright.Engstrand. And it was when your mother was in a nasty temper. I had to find some way of getting my knife into her, my girl. She was always so precious gentile. (Mimicking her.) ""Let go, Jacob! Let me be! Please to remember that I was three years with the Alvings at Rosenvold, and they were people who went to Court! Dark, painful memories can be put away to be forgotten. Until one day they all flood back in horrible detail. When television producers approached Alan Cumming to appear on a popular celebrity genealogy show, he hoped to solve the mystery of his maternal grandfather's disappearance that had long cast a shadow over his family. But this was not the only mystery laid before Alan.Alan grew up in the grip of a man who held his family hostage, someone who meted out violence with a frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself that sometimes spilled over onto everyone around him. That man was Alex Cumming, Alan's father, whom Alan had not seen or spoken to for more than a decade when he reconnected just before filming for Who Do You Think You Are? began. He had a secret he had to share, one that would shock his son to his very core and set into motion a journey that would change Alan's life forever. With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Under the editorship of the late Robert Nemiroff, with a provocative and thoughtful introduction by preeminent African-American scholar Margaret B. Wilkerson and a commentary by Spike Lee, this completely restored screenplay is the accurate and authoritative edition of Lorraine Hansberry's script and a testament to her unparalled accomplishment as a black woman artist. The 1961 film version of A Raisin in the Sun, with a screenplay by the author, Lorraine Hansberry, won an award at the Cannes Film Festival even though one-third of the actual screenplay Hansberry had written had been cut out. The film did essentially bring Hansberry's extraordinary play to the screen, but it failed to fulfill her cinematic vision. Now, with this landmark edition of Lorraine Hansberry's original script for the movie of A Raisin in the Sun that audiences never viewed, readers have at hand an epic, eloquent work capturing not only the life and dreams of a black family, but the Chicago-and the society-that surround and shape them.Important changes in dialogue and exterior shots, a stunning shift of focus to her male protagonist, and a dramatic rewriting of the final scene show us an artist who understood and used the cinematic medium to transform a stage play into a different art form-a profound and powerful film.

This edited collection is the first book-length critical study of the Showtime-Sky Atlantic television series Penny Dreadful (2014-2016), which also includes an analysis of Showtime¿s 2020 spin-off City of Angels. Chapters examine the status of the series as a work of twenty-first-century cable television, contemporary Gothic-horror, and intermedial adaptation, spanning sources as diverse as eighteenth and nineteenth-century British fiction and poetry, American dime novels, theatrical performance, Hollywood movies, and fan practices. Featuring iconic monsters such as Dr. Frankenstein and his Creature, the ¿bride¿ of Frankenstein, Dracula, the werewolf, Dorian Gray, and Dr. Jekyll, Penny Dreadful is a mash-up of familiar texts and new Gothic figures such as spiritualist Vanessa Ives, played by the magnetic Eva Green. As a recent example of adapting multiple sources in different media, Penny Dreadful has as much to say about the Romantic and Victorian eras as it does about our present-day fascination with screen monsters. 1.227,95 kr.

This book focuses on the characters that populate the Game of Thrones universe and on one of the most salient features of their interaction: violence and warfare. It analyses these questions from a multidisciplinary perspective that is chiefly based on Classical Studies. The book is divided into two sections. The first section explores Martin¿s characters as the mainstay of both the novels and the TV series, since the author has peopled his universe with three-dimensional intriguing characters that resonate with the reader/audience. The second section is devoted to violence and warfare, both pervasive in the Game of Thrones universe. In particular, the TV series¿ depiction of violence is explicit, going beyond the limits that have seldom been traversed in primetime television i.e. the execution of Ned Stark, the ¿Red Wedding¿ and ¿Battle of the Bastards¿. In the Game of Thrones universe, violence is not only restricted to warfare but is an everyday occurrence, a result of the social and gender inequalities characterising the world created by Martin.

"An intimate look at the making of a man, an actor, an advocate?and most importantly?a happy human being. A wonderful book that is funny, honest, fearless, and generous in its vulnerability." ?Douglas Stuart, Booker Prize-winning author of Shuggie BainThere is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art.The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father's Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.But...No one ever fully recovers from their past. There is no cure for it. You just learn to manage and prioritize it. I believe the second you feel you have triumphed or overcome something ? an abuse, an injury to the body or the mind, an addiction, a character flaw, a habit, a person ? you have merely decided to stop being vigilant and embraced denial as your modus operandi. And that is what this book is about, and for: to remind you not to buy in to the Hollywood ending.Ironically maybe, much of Baggage chronicles my life in Hollywood and how, since I recovered from a nervous breakdown at 28, work has repeatedly whisked me away from personal calamities to sets and stages around the world. It is also about marriage(s): starting with the break-up of my first (to a woman) and ending with the ascension to my second (to a man) with many kissed toads in between! But in everything, each failed relationship or encounter with a legend (Liza! X Men! Gore Vidal! Kubrick! Spice Girls!), in every bad decision or moment of sensual joy I have endeavored to show what I have learned and how I've become who I am today: a happy, flawed, vulnerable, fearless middle-aged man, with a lot of baggage.
