1996 bat der Klarinettist Peter Jenkin, Mitglied des Sydney Alpha Ensemble, einige Komponist:innen in Australien, ihm einminütige Stücke für ein Konzert zu schreiben. Elena Kats-Chernin griff auf melodisches und harmonisches Material aus ihrem kurz zuvor für die Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars entstandenen Ensemblewerk ProMotion zurück. Es entstand eine entfernt vom Klezmer inspirierte Miniatur, die viele lebhafte Figuren in nur, wie der Titel schon sagt, 25 Takten zum Klingen bringt.Schwierigkeitsgrad: 3-4

"Bei der Komposition von Joy in a Minor Key habe ich versucht, eine flüchtige, leichte, poetische Qualität zu erreichen, die fast nie den Boden berührt. Das Stück ist in meiner Lieblingsform eines Walzer-Rondos mit Coda geschrieben", so Elena Kats-Chernin. Anlass der Komposition war der Auftrag einer australischen Mäzenin zum 50. Geburtstag ihres jüngst von schwerer Krankheit genesenen Mannes. Das Stück ist ein Teil des Balletts Wild Swans, das Meryl Tankard 2002 im Opernhaus Sydney auf Grundlage des Märchens Die wilden Schwäne von Hans Christian Andersen choreographiert hat. Ursprünglich mit Sopran und Orchester besetzt, stellt Eliza Aria die Prinzessin Elisa vor und drückt ihre reine Seele, ihre Unschuld und den Glauben an das Gute in der Welt aus: Ohne ein Wort zu sagen, muss sie stechende Brennesseln zu Stoff weben, um ihre verzauberten Brüder zu retten. Die kurze, bezaubernde Vocalise ist vielleicht die bekannteste Schöpfung von Elena Kats-Chernin und ging als Musik zu einem Werbevideo auf YouTube um die Welt. Alphorn playing and yodeling are an integral part of traditional cultural events in Switzerland. Questions about musical contexts inevitably arise. Is alphorn-­playing to be understood as "blown yodeling"? Did the natural tone series of the alphorn influence yodeling? Are both rooted in the centuries-old Kuhreihen, the songs herdsmen used to lure the cows for milking?The team of authors explores possible links between yodeling and alphorn music and analyzes evidence pointing to a common origin of the two musical practices. The study area originates from Switzerland and extends over the south of Germany and Austria. Music-aesthetic connections are discussed, historical and current arguments weighed. In the Austrian Wurzhorner yodels, the name already indicates a connection to the instrument, and in the Muota­tal "Bücheljuuz", the yodel imitates the sound of the instrument so skillfully that the difference between voice and instrument is hardly noticed.However, not all types of yodeling have a musical relationship to the alphorn, and alphorn music is not always connected with yodeling. The study shows that there has been a tangible, albeit unsteady, musical interrelationship between alphorn and yodel for around 200 years.

Elena Kats-Chernin schrieb Afterwards zum 18. Geburtstag eines jungen Bekannten, Guy Knopke, der gerade mit dem Fagottspiel begonnen hatte. Der Titel ("Danach") bezieht sich auf "die neuen Abenteuer und Veränderungen, die nach einem großen Meilenstein noch vor einem liegen können", so die Komponistin. Sie schuf für sich selbst eine Solo-[auch Duo-]Klavierversion, die im Sammelband Piano Village (BB 3409) veröffentlich ist. Alariana aus dem Jahr 1985 ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein "typischer Mamlok": Die aus Bläsern und Streichern in entfernten Registern gemischte Besetzung sorgt für einen transparenten Klang, der Satz ist luftig polyphon, und die fünf aphoristisch kurzen, zusammen circa sieben Minuten dauernden Sätze folgen klassischen Satztypen in kontrastreichem Wechsel der Charaktere. Die fruchtbare Auseinandersetzung des Komponisten und seines Librettisten Matthew Jocelyn mit dem Textmaterial Shakespeares brachte neben der abendfüllenden Oper einige konzertante "Nebenprodukte" hervor: And once I played Ophelia für Sopran und Streichquartett, From Melodious Lay, ein orchestrales Poem mit Solo-Sopran und -Tenor, die Suite Gertrude Fragments für Mezzosopran und Gitarre sowie Confessio für Bassklarinette solo.
