"Los Cuatro Fantásticos", la serie de comics de Marvel creada por Stan Lee, cumple en 2021 sesenta años. Considerado como el "noveno arte", el comic, a través de las revistas de superhéroes, se encuentra en buen momento debido a su paso por las pantallas de cine. Por encargo de Justo Sanz, quien me había propuesto escribir hacía tiempo una obra para su cuarteto de clarinetes, nace esta obra, un juego de solistas, cuyos "cuatro instrumentos fantásticos" harán su función interpretando a cada uno de los personajes del cómic. El clarinete ("Sr. Fantástico"), el requinto ("La Mujer Invisible"), el corno di bassetto ("La Antorcha Humana"), y el clarinete bajo ("La Cosa") serán el equipo especial encargado de usar sus poderes para ayudar a la Humanidad con su música en estos tiempos de pandemia. Tras una introducción que da vida al grupo de héroes, se da paso a un interludio que servirá de transición para pasar de uno a otro superhéroe. Esta pieza es el breve tema que representa a los "Cuatro Fantásticos" que actuará como estribillo de la obra en una especie de "rondó". El clarinete, "Mr. Fantastic", exhibe sus poderes elásticos mediante largos glissandi, acompañado por el resto de instrumentos tocando un swing "espacial". El corno di bassetto, "Invisible Woman", tiene el poder de aparecer y desaparecer continuamente, así como de permitir que sus compañeros también lo hagan, exhibiendo al final del número su campo de fuerza invisible con un golpe vertiginoso. El clarinete bajo, "The Thing", golpea con sus puños de roca mediante slaps sonoros, siendo el miembro más amable, honesto, directo y libre de pretensiones del grupo, lleno de buen humor. Por último, el requinto, "The Human Torch", es capaz de volar encendido en fuego mediante rapidísimas y vertiginosas escalas cromáticas basadas en uno de los solos de guitarra de Jorge Salán, nuestro guitarrista de heavy-rock más internacional. Un último interludio en forma de "finale" lleva a una reposada coda que recapitula algunos de los motivos que han caracterizado a cada uno de los personajes, uniéndose los cuatro compañeros en un poderoso acorde final.Las diferentes piezas con cada uno de los personajes pueden interpretarse separadamente, también incluyendo si se prefiere, su estribillo final, como si la obra se tratara de una suite en varios movimientos de la cual el intérprete puede elegir tocar solo uno o varios de ellos.
