This reader-friendly book is built on step-by-step tools that expand your thinking and help you arrive at better ideas. You'll learn to determine which details are important in your subject, how to go about figuring out why they are important and how to talk and write about what they mean. Building your confidence, WRITING ANALYTICALLY helps you think of yourself as a writer and see writing as a way to better understand yourself and the world. Samples of student writing emphasize what makes the writing good rather than its shortcomings. Numerous applications and examples are tailored to those headed toward STEM majors. This book equips pre-service teachers, research postgraduate students, teacher educators, and language specialists with specific knowledge and skills about the principles, research, and applications of digital portfolios within the EFL writing contexts. While most digital portfolio scholarship focuses on higher education, this book targets primary-level and secondary-level school audiences, namely pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and Ministry of Education staff members with a focus on EFL writing. The rationale behind this design is that the published literature on digital portfolios tends to be generic and one-size-fits-all; there has been scant published scholarship about the development of digital portfolio literacy among teachers and pupils, which could enable them to upgrade the teaching and learning of writing in a larger EFL environment. This volume fills this gap by illustrating the why, what, and how aspects of digital portfolios in ten reader-friendly chapters.Guiding educators to enrich their pedagogical repertoire via the portfolio approach, this book emphasises a healthy balance between principles, research, and practice. It is an easy-to-follow guide to setting up digital portfolio systems and coaching pupils to improve writing, ensuring the dissemination of digital portfolios with high fidelity.
"The Successful Writing Group: Embrace a Mentor" - 20th Anniversary Edition Writing is a solitary activity, but writers are not solitary creatures. We need people, and we thrive in the company of other authors. Many times, we gather to share our stories so we can improve our craft. Those gatherings we call "Writing Groups." We learn from the best of each other: The people who encourage us to keep writing, help us learn the business, and - though it might be hard to hear - tell us when we've screwed up and how we can do better. It's the people who both honestly critique us and teach us better techniques who are the most valuable to our long-term success as Authors. Those people are the Mentors. Not all writing groups are good for us, though. Some groups are filled with members who hurt us. Their critiques are not given with love and support but with jealousy and vindictiveness. Some writers critique to harm, aiming their comments at the heart of the writer instead of the words on the page, or worse yet, they take pleasure in outright killing another writer's spirit. I call those people the Freeloaders. They take all of the good that a writing group has to offer, but they give nothing of value in return. Using my 20+ years as a member and leader of various writing groups in different parts of the country, I discuss what qualities to look for in a Mentor; various Freeloaders to beware of; how to transform a toxic writing group into a healthy group one member at a time; and the various methods of leading writing groups that I've found most effective. Because the Successful Writing Group is the one that embraces its Mentors and grows its Authors.
