The Untold Stories of the American Forces Vietnam NetworkThe American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN) was the military broadcast network that served American service personnel during the Vietnam War. But much of what has been previously written about the AFVN has been overstated and far from comprehensive, including the most famous work: the movie Good Morning, Vietnam. Hot Mics and TV Lights is non-fiction but reads like a barnstorming novel. Providing the perspective of thirty-seven individuals who served with AFVN over the course of the war, Hot Mics and TV Lights gives the reader a broad sense of what those serving with the network experienced.Although many of the stories are humorous, AFVN suffered significant casualties. Five broadcasters were taken prisoner, and at least one radio announcer earned a Purple Heart while on air. But typical war stories do not dominate this book. Instead, you'll hear the memories of "Bobbie the Weathergirl," Vietnam's biggest TV celebrity, and Wheel of Fortune game show host Pat Sajak when he was an AFVN deejay.Hot Mics and TV Lights is not just another book about the Vietnam War, but rather the chronicle of a storied broadcast network and its personnel who did their jobs as a costly war was being waged, often just outside their studio doors.
Mother's Day: The Courage & Sacrifice of the 3rd Battalion 25th Marines. In his debut book, Cleveland gives a first-hand account of his time with the 3/25, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His book is one of only a handful written telling the unit's story. In 2005, Cleveland, a Navy Corpsman (medic), deployed to Iraq with a thousand fellow Reservists as part of 3/25, an Ohio-based Marine Reserve unit. After five months of relative quiet, enemy forces began launching attack after attack on the unit. By the time the battalion went home in November 2005, it had lost more men than any other single unit in the war. Forty-six Marines and two Navy Corpsmen were killed in action during the unit's roughly nine-month activation. "These young men weren't Special Operators or even full-time soldiers," said Cleveland, who served with the battalion from 2002 to 2006. "They were Reservists who in their civilian lives worked as teachers, nurses, police officers, paramedics, and Home Depot workers. This is a story about traveling from civilian to combatant in the worst possible scenario and back. My goal is to memorialize the men that I served with: who they were, what they did and what it cost them."Cleveland, a police detective in Ohio with 25 years as a uniformed officer, will donate all proceeds from his book to Feed Our Vets, a non-profit providing food assistance to veterans and their families."Taylor's story is so emotional and engaging," said Chris Schafer, CEO at Tactical 16 Publishing. "His story provides deep insight into what happened to 3/25 in Iraq, and is a tremendous tribute to the men who sacrificed everything to defend our freedoms."Tactical 16 Publishing specializes in working with authors in the armed forces, police, fire, and rescue communities. What started out as an epilogue turned into a book of its own. The 13 stories you will read are compelling. They should be. Told by actual combat veterans of the Vietnam conflict, they reflect on so many battles that were fought; battles that were of the "kill, or be killed" type. The stories are, at times, raw. Other times they are humorous. Some end well, some do not. I learned that these men still carry many burdens that started when they got to Vietnam. I found that the end of their time in service never really ended. Many still suffer. Agent Orange was a culprit. P.T.S.D. was another. None were unscathed. I was able to interview two family members of a pilot who lost his life in Vietnam. From this, I learned of the long-lasting effects on family. Each I interviewed a POW from that conflict. I still find it hard to believe that this man came back alive. He's still alive and using his story for good. One thing for sure is that every one of these fine gentlemen are heroes of the highest order. I found them humble and unassuming about taking on this role. I hope this book will elevate them to their proper place, along with their countless comrades in arms.
It's early 1939. The nineteen-year-old son of a local schoolmaster graduates Dundee Wireless College and sets off on a gruelling six-month Antarctic Whaling Expedition. It barely prepares him for what comes next. On the North Atlantic Convoys, he faces
