"Speaking out for the first time, and in unforgettable detail, about the traumatic events of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie answers violence with art, and reminds us of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable."--
This book is based on a true story about an infant who grew up without any parents (no mother or father); struggled throughout life; endured hardships, ups and downs, highs and lows; dealt with racism, discrimination, mental, verbal, and psychological abuse; functioned independently; graduated from college with a professional degree without owing a cent for financial aid; built a house from the ground up without owing a single cent; bought timeshare property; gave birth to two amazing children who both attended college. That orphan, that person, happens to be no other than myself! I did it because of persistence, perseverance, resilience, and a strong will to survive.
For Zion's sake I will not keep silent; for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. (Isaiah 62:1)On the day that I cried out, you answered me and made me bold with strength in my soul. (Psalm 138:3)Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the answer. This is How I Survived Death (From Death to Freedom). This book is my living testimony of what a gracious God we serve and how he kept me and saved me from the taskmaster I served my entire life. I have gone through life as I call it riding the fence, but it doesn't work that way. You either have to be 100 percent all-in for Jesus or the devil. You cannot serve both. You either want to live life more abundantly or fall away to death with Satan. You are meant to live not die.I never truly know how much God loved me and what true grace was until I was totally set free and delivered from death, drugs, abusing myself, anger, pride, the root of bitterness, and lust. God came and gave me total repentance, forgiveness, deliverance from darkness, freedom from every chain of bondage the taskmaster Satan, and brought me into his kingdom. I have been set free. I found my mercy at the altar of Jesus's feet as I cried out to him. He had no hesitation. He cleaned me up as white as snow, setting me back on solid ground and showing me and loving me to feel the agape love I have never felt before. That's the kind of love you need to fill every void in your life and in my life--the best and most amazing feeling ever.I'm here to tell someone Jesus is the answer to every issue of life. He is the comforter, the deliverer, the waymaker. He is the salvation, healer, and protector. He is the way, the truth, and the life. And whoever the Son sets free is free indeed. Because you are my salvation I don't have to be afraid. I can call upon you, and you will save me.You have brought me out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke my chains of bondage. (Psalm 107:13)You have delivered me from darkness and brought me into your kingdom and your love. (Colossians 1:13)Total repentance plus total deliverance equals total freedom from the taskmaster. Freedom to live for my sweet king, Jesus, and all the praise and glory goes to God the Father for setting me free.
The world might not have known of this town Iho or the man called Okorohuru (Newman). This is a thrilling timeline account that has neither been told nor has been written before now. Iho is a small town in Southeastern Nigeria where Shell British Petroleum then Shell D'Arcy first struck oil and drilled its first wells. Those wells are still there till today, abandoned as the town that hosted its owners. In this town was born a foremost oil derrickman who worked in this foremost Nigerian oil field and other oil fields in the present-day Niger Delta area of Nigeria. He is Fidelis Okrorohuru Nwanjo of the great Njoku dynasty. The story of the oil heist in Nigeria, which has shaped and greatly influenced the sociopolitical and economic system of Nigeria, is narrated in this book. The Nigerian- Biafran Civil War (1967-1970) and the political instability that characterizes the Nigeria political sphere coupled with the influence of the global oil imperialists were also described by this man in a real-life story that he told his younger son.
From internationally renowned writer and Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie, a searing, deeply personal account of enduring--and surviving--an attempt on his life thirty years after the fatwa that was ordered against him.
It was the best times of my life, and it was the worst times. Father said, justice is in the afterlife, in this life, there is none. My name is Joseph. In my family there were seven children, four boys and three girls. I am the second born and the second son. I was fond of my brothers and sisters, and they were fond of me. Mother Nature did her work very well, even in my small village. In the spring the rains fell, and the crops grew, and in the summer the wind and sand blinded and covered us well. High over the village the clouds passed - dark ones, light ones, some like popcorn, some in the shapes of rabbits, snakes, sheep, fish, and even whales. At times, hail as large as an egg fell from the sky high above, and often, after the rain fell, a colorful rainbow stretched above our heads. Mother said to thank God Almighty for taking the time to color the sky so well for us. At night the moon shone and the stars appeared. My father would say that every star is much larger than our Earth, but as light as Cotton Candy. That is why it is able to float in the heavens, and does not fall on our heads. But how could a star be larger than our Earth but has the lightness of Cotton Candy? It was all a great mystery to me. Truly there are in life some wondrous things, most especially in Africa.
How did I become the person I am today? I have become a weak person, a person that now has low self-esteem, a person that now feels broken, unloved, and in so much pain. I am trying to figure out why and when I stopped loving myself and accepted the type of treatment that I have endured. When you hear my story, you may judge me, call me weak and insecure, and say I have low self-esteem and no self confidence. Well, whatever you say about me, believe me, I have already said it about myself repeatedly. I have cried many days and nights, asking myself the same thing, but the pain I am feeling right now is so unbearable that I feel like I am losing my mind. Every day I wear a mask with a smile on my face, laughing and talking to people at work, my family, and friends. A mask of happiness but inside, I am sad, feeling drained, tired, and most of all, embarrassed. I did not want people to know what I was going through because of the embarrassment and being disappointed in myself that I had allowed myself to become the person I am now.

'Gripping' ED CAESAR ¿ 'Masterly' GEOFF DYER ¿ 'Incredible' TIM HARFORD ¿ 'A universal story that transcends time' NEW YORK TIMES ¿ 'Superb' DAILY TELEGRAPH ¿ 'We know what's going to happen, but feel the suspense nonetheless' THE TIMES** THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER **** WINNER OF THE KIRKUS BOOK PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION 2024 **The definitive, dramatic, minute-by-minute story of the Challenger space shuttle disaster based on fascinating in-depth reporting and new archival research - this is riveting history that reads like a thriller. On the morning of 28 January 1986, just seventy-three seconds into flight, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all seven people on board. Millions around the world witnessed the tragic deaths of the crew, which included schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like the assassination of JFK, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in twentieth century history - one that forever changed the way America thought of itself and its optimistic view of the future. Yet the full story of what happened - and why - has never been told.Based on extensive archival research and meticulous, original reporting, Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space follows a handful of central protagonists - including each of the seven members of the doomed crew - through the years leading up to the accident, a detailed account of the tragedy itself, and into the investigation that followed. It's a compelling tale of optimism and ingenuity shattered by political cynicism and cost-cutting in the interests of burnishing national prestige; of hubristic 'go fever'; and of an investigation driven by heroic leakers and whistle-blowers determined to bring the truth to light. With astonishing clarity and narrative verve, Adam Higginbotham reveals the history of the shuttle program, the lives of men and women whose stories have been overshadowed by the disaster, as well as the designers, engineers and test pilots who struggled against the odds to get the first shuttle into space. A masterful blend of riveting human drama, fascinating science and shocking political infighting, Challenger brings to life a turning point in our history. The result is an even more complex and extraordinary story than any of us remembered - or thought possible.Finalist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction 2024An Amazon Best Book of the Year 2024Goodreads' nominee for Readers' Favourite History and Biography 2024

Lania Knight's debut collection There Is Fire Here includes fifteen striking personal essays that span nearly a lifetime. Knight left home at sixteen on the back of a motorbike and never looked back. Her writing examines questions of parenthood, fidelity and promiscuity, private and public violence, gender identity, and why and how we write. In these essays, we see what it means to escape and to find ourselves caught in a cycle of coercion and abuse. Transformation comes slow and dear, but Knight's writing shines in the heart of the fire, where the self emerges unbroken and true.

ONE OF THE MOST DISTURBING CASES OF SEXUAL ABUSE ON RECORD-AND THE INSPIRING TRUE STORY OF THE WOMAN WHO SURVIVED TO SPEAK HER TRUTH¿My name is Abigail Alvarado. When I was nine, Child Protective Services removed me and my siblings from my mother's home, a known crack house, due to neglect. After an extended stay at a children's shelter in San Antonio, Texas, we were adopted by our Uncle Chevo, a Sergeant in the Army, and his wife, Laura. We moved to Hawaii, where they were stationed, thinking it would be paradise. For me, it became a living hell. What followed was 16 years of harrowing abuse, brainwashing, manipulation, stalking, physical abuse, sexual assault, and the stripping away of me, as a little girl, bit by bit, until there was nothing left. I became a sex slave to my sadistic aunt and uncle. Ultimately, I gave birth to three beautiful babies, each of whom was his. My children were raised to believe that I was their sister. And I was raised to believe that I was nothing. My abusers were masterful manipulators who wrapped pretty lies around the ugly truth to hide their abuse. No longer bound by their lies and my shame, I am here to take my power back, page by page. I am no one's victim. I am a survivor, unbound. ***This book is not only a must-read for other trauma survivors but for every person who knows them. Each day, we find ourselves unknowingly walking down city streets, sharing an elevator, or standing in a checkout line alongside people who have survived the unfathomable. As a survivor, Abigail Alvarado shares her harrowing life story in the hope of inspiring anyone who feels trapped by life circumstances or in an abusive situation. After walking nearly two decades on her remarkable journey from Hell to HOPE, Abby is shining a light into the darkest of places - her past. Some in positions of authority would call Abigail Alvarado's story "one of the worst cases of child abuse" they had ever heard. Abby would call it her life story. Read the tell-all memoir that people are calling equal parts "unputdownable" and "unforgettable." To all the true crime lovers out there: buckle up-you are in for one heck of a ride. To everyone else: grab the nearest box of tissues and your favorite beverage of choice. The journey begins now...

My Walk Through Shame will transport you to Unit M in Seke in the Harare Province of Zimbabwe, the dusty roads of Kenzamba, Regent House in Cape Town, the corridors of Red Cross Children's Hospital, right to the seat of the massive metal bird, Boeing enroute to Australia. You will most likely shed some tears, burst into laughter, feel your heart smiling and a surge of courage and inspiration building up while indulging Sifelani Masamba's story. You will definitely learn of how resilient the human spirit is or rather can be. My Walk Through Shame will really help you walk your own walk. The book will help you walk to places within yourself that you may be afraid, or feeling ashamed to visit alone. Sifelani is one talented writer whose storytelling ability transports you with images and get you glued up to every page because you never know what to expect, which makes his writing, seasoned with sacarsm and humour, therapeutic. Indeed sharing one's story is not only a worthwhile endeavor for the storyteller, but also for us who hear those stories and feel less alone because of it. Like Michelle Obama in Becoming said: Even when it's not pretty or perfect, even when it's more real than you want it to be. Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own. And My Walk Through Shame will empower you to own yours.
In the 1890s, when a woman's role was seen as marrying well and raising a family, Daisy Bates reinvented herself from humble governess to heiress-traveller and 'woman of science'. She would become one of the best-known and most controversial ethnologists in history, and one of the fi rst people to put Aboriginal culture on the map. Born into tough circumstances, Daisy's prospects were dim; her father an alcoholic bootmaker, her mother dying of consumption when Daisy was only four years old. through sheer strength of will, young Daisy overcame her miserable start, and in 1883 she migrated to Australia with a boatload of orphans, passing herself off as an heiress who taught for fun. Marriage followed - first with the young Breaker Morant, then bigamously with two other husbands. For decades she led a double life. But who was the real Daisy Bates? While other biographies have presented her as a saint, historian Susanna de Vries gives readers a more complex portrait of the 'Queen of the Never Never'.
