From Sherlock Holmes onwards, fictional detectives use lenses: Ocular Proof and the Spectacled Detective in British Crime Fiction argues that these visual aids are metaphors for ways of seeing, and that they help us to understand not only individual detectives¿ methods but also the kinds of cultural work detective fiction may do. It is sometimes regarded as a socially conservative form, and certainly the enduring popularity of ¿Golden Age¿ writers such as Christie, Sayers, Allingham and Marsh implies a strong element of nostalgia in the appeal of the genre. The emphasis on visual aids, however, suggests that solving crime is not a simple matter of uncovering truth but a complex, sophisticated and inherently subjective process, and thus challenges any sense of comforting certainties. Moreover, the value of eye-witness testimony is often troubled in detective fiction by use of the phrase ¿the ocular proof¿, whose origin in Shakespeare¿s Othello reminds usthat Othello is manipulated by Iago into misinterpreting what he sees. The act of seeing thus comes to seem ideological and provisional, and Lisa Hopkins argues that the kind of visual aid selected by each detective is an index of his particular propensities and biases.

Das Thema der kollektiven Autor:innenschaft, bereits in den 1990er Jahren mit Blick auf die damals neuen technologischen Möglichkeiten breiter diskutiert, scheint aktuell erneut auf ein wachsendes Interesse zu stoßen, etwa unter dem Stichwort der ¿Kollaboration¿. Der vorliegende Band fragt nach der Schwellenfunktion der digitalen Wende, die sich in eine Folge von weiteren medialen, epistemischen, ästhetischen und sozialen Schwellen und historisierbaren Konstellationen einreiht, die Konzepte von kollektiver Autorschaft/Autor:innenschaft hervorgebracht und grundsätzlich verändert haben. Die partizipatorische Kultur sowie Verfahren der »produsage«, die sich in den medialen Konvergenzbewegungen der jüngeren Vergangenheit feststellen lassen, haben Zurechnungsstrategien von Autorschaft, an denen lange festgehalten wurde, außer Kurs gebracht. Dazu sind auch die in der Tradition der Avantgarden stehenden Projekte der generativen Codeliteratur zu zählen, die sich von den auf und mittels Plattformen produzierten und distribuierten Texten durch das vorausgesetzte Code-Wissen und den gezielten Gebrauch digitaler Technik unterscheiden lassen. Wurde die automatische Generierung von Text in der Vergangenheit oft als Auslagerung von Autor:innenschaft auf die Maschine konzipiert, rückt hier die Frage nach der »Arbeitsteilung zwischen Mensch und Maschine« in den Vordergrund.

Das Buch untersucht deutschsprachige Texte von KZ-Überlebenden aus Buchenwald und Dachau, die in den zwei produktivsten Phasen der Holocaustliteratur (1945-1949/1979-Gegenwart) veröffentlicht wurden. Die Autorin untersucht das Täterbild narratologisch und erinnerungskulturell vergleichend. Sie zeigt, dass die Autoren der frühen Lagerliteratur die von ihnen erlebten NS-Täter mit aller größter Intensität und Anschaulichkeit darstellen, während sich die der späten Lagerliteratur außer der Täterdarstellung auch auf der Konstruktion ihrer in den KZs verlorenen Identitäten hinwenden. Dementsprechend werden die Opferbilder viel konkreter und detaillierter als zuvor, während die Täterbilder mittlerweile amorpher, abstrakter und allgemeiner scheinen.

At begrebet ”værdikriger” ikke er et postmoderne fænomen, står klart for én, når man stifter bekendtskab med Johannes Jørgensens litteratur- og kunstanmeldelser. Til gengæld har nutidens kulturelle værdikrigere svært ved at hamle op med Jørgensens enorme viden og belæsthed, endsige hans elegante og kirurgisk præcise pen. Johannes Jørgensens europæiske udsyn, kombineret med hans forankring i det danske, gør denne samling anmeldelser til en tour de force i europæisk og dansk kulturhistorie fra 1890’erne og frem til tiden efter anden verdenskrig. Når man læser Johannes Jørgensens anmeldelser, forstår man, hvorfor han – efter H.C. Andersen – er den mest oversatte danske forfatter. Uddrag af bogen Thi for Symbolismen er det Subjektive væsentligt og Virkelighedsgengivelsen uden Værd. For Symbolismen er Virkeligheden kun udtryk for Stemningen, og den symbolistiske Maler omdanner derfor paa sine Billeder Naturens Former og Farver efter sin Stemnings Behov. Det indses heraf, hvor urimeligt man handler i at forarge sig over et symbolistisk Billedes usandsynlige Farver eller urimelige Konturer. Meningen med et saadant Maleri er jo ikke at efterligne Naturen, at afbilde et Stykke Virkelighed – men i Beskuerens Sjæl at fremkalde en Stemning svarende til den, hvoraf Kunstneren i Frembringelsens Øjeblik har været opfyldt. Da Vincent van Gogh vilde fremstille Kristi Passionshistorie gjorde han det i en Række Landskaber, gennem hvis Melankoli og Majestæt han søgte at udtrykke Guddommens Lidelser. Om forfatteren Johannes Jørgensen (1866-1956) var som lyriker, prosaist, journalist og tidsskriftsudgiver en central skikkelse i firsernes og halvfemsernes danske litteratur. Efter sin konvertering til katolicismen i 1896 skrev han fortrinsvis helgenbiografier, men fra denne periode stammer også selvbiografien Mit Livs Legende (1916-28). Han boede med kortere afbrydelser i Assisi i Italien fra 1915 til 1953 og blev et stort navn i den katolske verden. Martin Bergsøe er mag.art. i nordisk litteratur med en bachelor i filosofi og en master i teologi. Er bosiddende på Falster. Han har tidligere udgivet En røst i ørkenen: Ånd og liv i Johannes Jørgensens forfatterskab (2019) samt bidraget til antologien Fagerø om Johannes Jørgensen og hans forfatterskab.

Was ist der Mensch und wie verhält er sich zum Tier? Wird diese Frage in ethischen, gesellschaftlichen, philosophischen und ästhetischen Diskursen seit der Antike debattiert, stellt sie sich im 20. Jahrhundert angesichts der NS-Diktatur und ihrer Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit in einem besonders bedrohlichen Umfeld. Wie wirkt sich dies auf das nachfolgende Verständnis von Mensch und Tier aus? ¿ Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Mensch-Tier-Konstellationen in fiktionalen und theoretischen Texten, die im durch das NS-Regime verursachten Exil entstanden sind. Dabei werden Fragen der Exilforschung mit Fragen der Literary und Cultural Animal Studies zusammengedacht. Ausführlich analysiert werden Texte von Victor Klemperer, Alexander Bein, Hannah Arendt, Max Horkheimer und Theodor W. Adorno, Hermann Broch, Oskar Maria Graf, Alfred Kerr, Hilde Domin und Hans Sahl.

Reading Slaughter: Abattoir Fictions, Space, and Empathy in Late Modernity examines literary depictions of slaughterhouses from the development of the industrial abattoir in the late nineteenth century to today. The book focuses on how increasing and ongoing isolation and concealment of slaughter from the surrounding society affects readings and depictions of slaughter and abattoirs in literature, and on the degree to which depictions of animals being slaughtered creates an avenue for empathic reactions in the reader or the opportunity for reflections on human-animal relations. Through chapters on abattoir fictions in relation to narrative empathy, anthropomorphism, urban spaces, rural spaces, human identities and horror fiction, Sune Borkfelt contributes to debates in literary animal studies, human-animal studies and beyond.

After the fall of Saddam's regime Iraqi novelists are not only writing about the occupation and the current disintegration of Iraq but are also revisiting previous wars that devastated their lives. This book examines how recent Iraqi fiction about war depicts the Iraqi subject in its relation to war, coercion, subjugation and occupation. The theoretical medieval concept of the homo sacer, the killable, as defined by Giorgio Agamben is used to explore the lives and the experiences of different war actors such as the soldier, the war deserter, the camp detainee and the suicide bomber depicted in their "e;bare life"e; as men doomed to death in the necropolitical context. War and Occupation in Iraqi Fiction is an exploration of fictional works by a new generation of leading Iraqi authors such as Ali Badr, Shakir Nuri, Najm Wali, Hdiya Hussein and others. It brings to light the overarching continuum in the production of homines sacri in Iraq. Instances of homo sacer under the dictatorship are complemented by new instances found in the camp and under the state of exception of the occupation and the war on terror.

This new study provides fresh readings of Thomas Hardy¿s work and illuminates the social and cultural history of dress in the nineteenth century. The book argues that Hardy had a more detailed and acute understanding of the importance of dress in forming and regulating personal identity and social relations than any other writer of his time. Structured thematically, it takes into account both nineteenth-century and modern theoretical approaches to the significance of what we wear.The author gives an extended analysis of individual works by Hardy, showing, for example, that A Pair of Blue Eyes is central to the study of the function of clothing in the expression and perception of sexuality. The Hand of Ethelberta, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d¿Urbervilles and The Woodlanders are examined in order to show the extent to which dress obscures or reveals the nature of the self. Hardy¿s other novels, as well as the short stories and poems, are used to confirm the centrality of dress and clothing in Hardy¿s work. In this comprehensive study of The Stars My Destination, D. Harlan Wilson makes a case for the continued significance of Alfred Bester¿s SF masterwork, exploring its distinctive style, influences, intertextuality, affect, and innovation as well as its extensive metafictional properties. In Stars, Bester established himself as a son of the pulp-SF and high-modernist writers that preceded him and a forefather to the New Wave and cyberpunk movements that followed his lead. Wilson¿s study depicts Bester as an SF insider as much as an outlier, writing in the spirit of the genre but breaking with the fixation on hard science in favor of psychological interiority, literary experimentation, and adult themes. The book combines close-readings of the novel with broader concerns about contemporary media, technoculture, and the current state of SF itself. This book explores concepts of environmentalism and feminism in science fiction novels written by women. By extrapolating the future of climate change, the authors of these texts model how readers can apply utopian feminist and environmental theories in their own lives. Chapter One establishes an understanding of ecofeminist environmental thinking through original research conducted at the Ursula K. Le Guin archive at the University of Oregon. Chapter Two shows an example of climate change dystopia set in California in Claire Vaye Watkins¿ novel Gold Fame Citrus. The final chapters explore utopian visions of queer ecologies in books by Octavia Butler and N.K. Jemisin. Because climate change is so difficult for individuals to grapple with, a new perspective is needed to survive it. The queer ecological philosophy in these novels points to a way of life that can reduce environmental harm in an era of climate change.

The French in Macao in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries: Literary, Cultural, and Historical Perspectives investigates the role that Macao played as a meeting place of the East and the West during this period of time and its decline as a Portuguese colony in the eyes of the Europeans. The book provides a comprehensive view of representations of Macao as portrayed by the French. These texts in French have been studied less than Chinese or Portuguese texts on Macao. Overall, the book contributes to the study of colonial history, cultural studies, and China in the late Qing dynasty.

The book examines prominent literary works from the past two decades by Russian women writers dealing with the Soviet past. It explores works such as Daniel Stein, Interpreter by Ludmilla Ulitskaya, The Time of Women by Elena Chizhova, Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich, and In Memory of Memory by Maria Stepanova, and uncovers connecting thematic structures and features. Focusing on the concepts of displacement and postmemory, the book shows how these works have given voice to those on the margins of society and of ¿great history¿ whose resistance was often silent.
