«Through detailed, elegant interpretations of utopian novels produced in the United States and the Soviet Union, Pavla Veselá casts aside standard commonplaces about East / West cultural divergences and reveals the critical function of utopian fiction that is shared in the two national contexts.»(Michael Hardt, Professor of Literature, Duke University)«It is encouraging to read The Polyphony of Utopia in our cynical and desperate time. By discussing a number of Russian and American utopian novels in the light of ¿utopian realism,¿ addressing the uncertainty, anxiety and doubt contained in their visions of hope, Pavla Veselá proves the importance and relevance of the transformation of today¿s world toward Utopia.»(Thomas Lahusen, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto)Utopias ¿ literary visions of better, more just and happier communities ¿ have been misconceived as «mere fantasies» on the one hand and «models to implement» on the other. Building on the notion of «critical utopia» and elaborating on interpretations of literary works as contradictory and incomplete, the book analyses selected utopian and dystopian novels by five writers: Edward Bellamy, Alexander Bogdanov, Ivan Yefremov, Marge Piercy and Octavia E. Butler. It argues that departing from the conventions of realism, utopias advance credible visions of more perfect ways of living and being which are nevertheless destabilized through gothic and poetic generic elements. Unresolved issues are further explored in (utopian as well as dystopian) sequels and prequels. The novels analysed in detail include Bellamy¿s Looking Backward 2000-1887 (1888) and Equality (1897), Bogdanov¿s Red Star: A Utopia (1908) and Engineer Menni: A Novel of Fantasy (1913), Yefremov¿s Andromeda: A Space-Age Tale (1957) and The Hour of the Bull (1970), Piercy¿s Woman on the Edge of Time (1976) and He, She and It (1991), and Butler¿s Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998).

This book analyzes how literary fiction depicts multilingual worlds by incorporating multiple languages into the text. Taking as case studies several contemporary novels as well as Leo Tolstoy's nineteenth-century classic War and Peace, it explores how reading becomes a translingual process.
The history of written Romani literature is only about 100 years old, and thus Romani literatures are still being defined and consolidated. At least two special features characterize this young literature: on the one hand, it is a multilingual diasporic world literature that often can be characterized as engaged literature and tries to deconstruct various age-old stereotypes of the minority. On the other hand, female authors play a strikingly prominent role. Female authors frequently achieve visibility with their texts on the national book markets. Some authors appear in their own texts as committed feminists and/or human rights activists. For other authors, sexuality and gender play a less prominent role in their works. Additionally, women often also play very central roles in texts by male authors. Therefore, this volume aims to explore the different facets of Romani literatures on two interrelated axes. First, the essays explore the status of several diverse works as transnational world literature. Second, the contributions examine the significance of writing as a form of social engagement and self-empowerment. What emerges is the observation that mainly women authors have been speaking out and standing up for their rights as women and Romnya. This book is a collection of excellent essays about heroic, intelligent, perceptive, and resourceful private citizens with exceptional investigative capacities and their important contributions to noteworthy criminal cases which are discussed in literary masterpieces by Agatha Christie and Dorothy Bowers. These citizen sleuths are motivated by a strong moral courage, by a commitment to examine the evidence in any case meticulously and thoroughly, by a spirit of civic devotion, by a dedication to searching carefully and honestly for the truth, and by a strong belief in ethical values, fairness, and justice so that the security and wellbeing of a community can be supported and preserved. These citizen sleuths, who often collaborate effectively with law enforcement officials in investigations, all passionately share Miss Marple¿s belief, which she expresses in Chapter Twenty-eight of Agatha Christie¿s A Pocket Full of Rye, that it is vital "that wickedness shouldn¿t triumph" in everyday life and in society. Each of the four chapters focuses on a different type of malevolent character which these citizen sleuths notice and investigate: murderous family members, treacherous friends, devilish figures, and corrupt officials who abuse and exploit their positions of authority. The conclusion examines several fascinating cold case scenarios in the works of Agatha Christie."Something between Edgar Allan Poe¿s detective prodigy of the preternatural and Jane Austen¿s ¿neighbourhood of voluntary spies,¿ Christie¿s and Bowers¿s amateur sleuths have a nose for foul play and an unflinching sense of civic duty and moral courage. A welcome intervention in a critically neglected genre, Hugo Walter¿s timely study offers rare insight into the history, influence, and mechanics of the modern ¿whodunit?¿. While focused on Christie and Bowers unassuming-but-intrepid protagonists, this engaging work offers a much broader sociology of citizen detectives and the allure of their uncanny capacity to inhabit diabolical genius and their moral obligation to even the score."¿Gregory S. Jackson, Rutgers University
This book is the first comprehensive study of the reception of Tennessee Williams in China, from rejection and/or misgivings to cautious curiosity and to full-throated acceptance, in the context of profound changes in China's socioeconomic and cultural life and mores since the end of the Cultural Revolution. It fills a conspicuous gap in scholarship in the reception of one of the greatest American playwrights and joins book-length studies of Chinese reception of Shakespeare, Ibsen, O'Neill, Brecht, and other important Western playwrights whose works have been eagerly embraced and appropriated and have had catalytic impact on modern Chinese cultural life.
A significant new contribution to Hemmingway scholarship, this book seeks to show that the moral world of The Sun Also Rises is profoundly unstable, and that every character can be seen as being both endorsed and critiqued by the text. This is manifested especially in Jake¿s status as a partially reliable narrator, and above all in his judgment of Brett. Jake consistently hides his true feelings for Brett from the reader and from himself, as he seeks to appear in control of his life. Reading the text in this way also renders the novel¿s famous conclusion less decisive than is usually assumed. This book will be of interest to upper-level undergraduates as well as graduate students and scholars.
This book conducts a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of Franz Kafkäs relation to China. Commencing with an examination of the myriad Chinese cultural influences to which Kafka was exposed, it goes on to explore the ways in which they manifest themselves in canonical stories, such as Description of A Struggle, The Great Wall of China, and An Old Manuscript. This leads the way to thought-provoking comparative studies of Kafka and major Chinese writers and philosophers, such as Zhuang Tzu, Pu Songling, Qian Zhongshu, and Lu Xun. Highlighting kindred philosophical concepts, shared aesthetic tastes, and parallel narrative strategies, these comparisons transcend mere textual analysis, to explore the profound cultural, historical, and philosophical implications of Kafkäs works. Finally, the book turns to an examination Kafkäs impact on modern life in China, including its translation studies, literature, and even its mass culture.
However shared the Roman inheritance may be, it hardly unifies. Which Rome is the model, the Republic or the Empire? The Rome of imperial conquest or of civil war? By whom is it ruled? By the glorious conqueror who extended universal peace, the rule of law, and infrastructure - roads and aqueducts - or by the detested tyrant who imposed domination? Or worse, the corruptor of republican liberty and source of putrefying decadence? Rome always returns, but which Rome? France presents itself as a privileged locus for Rome's return since the beginnings of its history. The perennial recourse to ancient Rome - as model or anti-model - binds together a cohesive tradition. The logic of this gesture asserts a unity beyond modern identity politics, which depend on defining a "them" against "us," to resist nativist assumptions about national character, French, German, Italian, American, etc. All share the same polysemous inheritance, for good or ill. All are Roman and all resist Rome without needing to agree on what exactly is shared. The unity underlying the discourse, however, no longer depends on defining Rome as an origin. Instead, Rome's figuration persists discursively, as a translation: to be translated time and time again.
Marta Tomczok presents all Polish postmodern novels about the Holocaust, starting with "The First Splendor" by Leopold Buczkowski and ending with "The Suspected Dybbuk" by Andrzej Bart. She also presents their rich relationships with selected foreign-language prose, which intensified especially at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The culmination of the entire trend is a discussion around two novels: "Tworki" by Marek Bienczyk and "Fly Trap Factory" by Andrzej Bart, which reveals the aestheticizing and post-memorial profile of Polish postmodernization and its advantage over the historiosophical trend. This monograph is not only the first such collection of post-Holocaust postmodern novels, but also the first comprehensive study of postmodernism in the literature about the Holocaust, which, thanks to comparative analysis, tries to analyze and explain the circumstances of the appearance and later disappearance of this trend from cultural landscape of the world and Poland.
This book discusses how from their different backgrounds and on different levels, the German philosopher, sociologist and musicologist,Theodor W. Adorno, (1903-1969) and the Irish playwright, Brian Friel,(1929-2015) came to the conclusion that the modern crisis rendered art¿s affirmative essence, like all positivistic fixations, obsolete. Only a new conception of dialectics, based on the reciprocity of opposites, rather than on antitheses, is capable of healing modern dichotomies. Independent of Adornös Negative Dialectics and Critical Theory, Friel is aware that with the processual character of life this requires of the artist in particular an attitude both critical and conciliatory and a persistent readiness to change. Reality is in need of possibility, its dialectic other. Uncertainty, in Friel¿s Theatre of Hope and Despair is no longer a defect of our time, but a source of creation in art as well as in life.
George Steiner's discussion of Jeffrey Mehlman's writing on Walter Benjamin gives the flavor of Mehlman's writing in Second Thoughts."The arch erudition and playful intelligence of Jeffrey Mehlman's concise jeu d'esprit, Walter Benjamin for Children, sparkle. Mehlman weaves a sequence of associative arabesques, 'intertextually imbricated, psychoanalytically informed,' on the script for two radio programmes for children which Benjamin wrote during 1929-1930. Almost in the style of a magician, Professor Mehlman demonstrates the literally catastrophic substance of Benjamin's tales for children. With a scholastic acuity and wit resembling that of Benjamin himself, Mehlman teases out in the thematic rootedness of catastrophe and fraud the "phantom presence of the motif of a 'false messianism' which flowers, nearly subliminally, in these seemingly innocent broadcasts."
Offers new ways to read the relationship between culture, ecology, and capitalism.
A study of non-representational art and poetry in the work of Bataille, Klossowski, and Michaux.
This book examines organizations of consumerist economics, which developed at the turn of the twentieth century in the West and at the turn of the twenty-first century in China, in relation to modernist poetics. Consumerist economics include the artificial ¿person¿ of the corporation, the vertical integration of production, and consumption based upon desire as well as necessity. This book assumes that poetics can be understood as a theory in practice of how a world works. Tracing the relation of economics to poetics, the book analyzes the impersonality of indirect discourse in Qian Zhongshu and James Joyce; the impressionist discourses of Mang Ke and Ezra Pound; and discursive difficulty in Mo Yan and William Faulkner. Bringing together two notably distinct cultures and traditions, this book allows us to comprehend modernism as a theory in practice of lived experience in cultures organized around consumption.
