Englishes in Africa is an important new edited collection which explores various aspects of English in contemporary Africa. The authors examine the current state of English in eight countries where the language plays a major role: Cameroun, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Morocco, and Zimbabwe. Die Theorie des wilden Übersetzens, die dieses Buch entwickelt, beschreibt Verfahren des Übersetzens, die als generativer Mechanismus zur Produktion eigenständiger literarischer Texte eingesetzt werden. In diesem Umgang mit Übersetzung liegt ein gezielter Verstoß gegen die konventionellen Übersetzungsnormen, insofern sich das literarische Verfahren, das dabei zum Einsatz kommt, von der Bedeutung der fremdsprachigen Wörter löst. Das wilde Übersetzen orientiert sich stattdessen an den Zeichenträgern des fremden Sprachmaterials. Die theoretischen Überlegungen werden ergänzt durch zwei Lektüren, welche die Emergenz dieser Konstellation in zwei unterschiedlichen literaturgeschichtlichen Kontexten in Johann Fischarts Geschichtklitterung (1575) und in Arno Schmidts Zettel's Traum (1970) nachzeichnen. Über den Nachweis der Verfahren selbst und die Rekonstruktion ihrer jeweiligen Funktionsweise hinaus rekonstruiert diese Studie die poetologischen Reflexionen, die in beiden Texten zur Explikation des Verfahrens angestellt werden. Die Lektüren zeigen, dass das wilde Übersetzen nicht nur die formale Gestalt der Texte bestimmt, sondern auch Konsequenzen für deren inhaltliche Interpretation mit sich bringt.

Aus literaturwissenschaftlicher, insbesondere narratologischer Forschung sowie mathematischen, philosophischen, physikalischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen zur Thematik des Raumes wird ein fuzzy-set-Modell herausgearbeitet, mit dem Raum in literarischen Texten analysiert und quantifiziert werden kann. Das Modell ist Grundlage eines Machine-Learning- Trainings, mit Hilfe dessen ein Tool trainiert wurde, das Ausdrücke, die in die Kategorien des theoriebasierten Modells fallen, automatisch erkennt und annotiert. In einem Kernkorpus aus 100 Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten (18-21) wurden mit Hilfe dieses Tools mehr als eine Million Annotationen in die Texte eingefügt und anschließend analysiert.
This book is inspired by the author's work as part of a major international and interdisciplinary research group at the University of Konstanz, Germany: "What If-On the Meaning, Relevance, and Epistemology of Counterfactual Claims and Thought Experiments." Having contributed to great discoveries, such as those by Galileo and Einstein, thought experiments are especially topical in the twenty-first century, since this is a concept that bridges the gap between the arts and the sciences, promoting interdisciplinary innovation. To study thought experiments in literature, it is imperative to examine relevant texts closely: this has rarely been done to date and this is precisely what this book does as a pilot study focusing on selected works of philosophy and literature. Offering the first systematic overview of modern and contemporary Chinese literature from a translation studies perspective, this handbook provides students, researchers and teachers with a context in which to read and appreciate the effects of linguistic and cultural transfer in Chinese literary works. Translation matters. It always has, of course, but more so when we want to reap the benefits of intercultural communication. In many universities Chinese literature in English translation is taught as if it had been written in English. As a result, students submit what they read to their own cultural expectations; they do not read in translation and do not attend to the protocols of knowing, engagements and contestations that bind literature and society to each other. The Novel in Nineteenth-Century Bengal answers this question by looking at the readers of some of the first Bengali novelists, including Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay and Mir Mosharraf Hossain. Moving from the world of novels, periodicals, letters, and reviews to that of colonial educational policies, this book provides a rich literary history of the reading lives of some of the earliest novel readers in colonial India. Sunayani Bhattacharya studies the ways in which Bengalis thought about reading; how they approached the thorny question of influence; and uncovers that they relied on classical Sanskrit and Perso-Arabic literary and aesthetic models, whose attendant traditions formed not a distant past, but coexisted, albeit contentiously, with the everyday present. Challenging dominant postcolonial scholarship, The Novel in Nineteenth-Century Bengal engages with the lived experience of colonial modernity as it traces the import of the Bengali reader's choices on her quotidian life, and grants access to 19th-century Bengal as a space in which the past is to be found enmeshed with the present.
