This book provides a comprehensive overview of ¿societal deception¿ - how and why people are deceived and led to believe fake news. Coherently blending critical political economy and sociology, the author provocatively examines how corporations, political parties, the media, think tanks and assorted 'influencers' seek to manipulate public opinion to achieve their goals. This book spans an array of contemporary topics and issues not normally tackled by a single writer ¿ the media, genetic engineering, fast food, environmental pollution, climate change, economic inequality, political manipulations, sports, and religion. While critical in subject matter, and replete with easily accessible and reliable sources, this book is highly readable and entertaining for the general as well as academic audience interested in current global issues.
'I laughed and cried a little, reading the book with Pam's voice in my head. A true inspiration on every level as a memoir and, as only Pam can, tells us all what we need to do' - ANGELA HARTNETT OBEA FINANCIAL TIMES BOOK OF THE YEARWhen world-class chef Pam first opened Inver, her restaurant on the shores of Loch Fyne, she set out to discover what makes 'modern Scottish food' - or if it even existed. This book traces Pam's journey to answer that question and in doing so reveals what we can all gather from our culinary heritage. Part memoir, part manifesto on the future of feeding the world and a feminist critique of the food business, it documents the difficult early days of her now multiple award-winning restaurant, reflecting on how the immersive experience of 'destination restaurants' can both help and hinder our understanding of wider land and food culture. From the soil to the kitchen, Between Two Waters interrogates the influences on what we eat: capitalism, colonialism and gender, as well as our own personal and cultural histories. Yet it also captures with real heart all that the dinner table has to offer us: sustenance, both physical and imaginative, challenges and adventure and, most importantly, communion with others.More than anything, it is a blisteringly original work from one of the world's most innovative thinkers about food, sustainability and landscape.
Gastronomiens spor i den danske samfund. (O. G. Mouritsen, red.) Bogen indeholder bidrag fra Martin Marchman Andersen, Rasmus Bredahl, Louise Beck Brønnum, Helle Brønnum Carlsen, Katja Seerup Clausen, Anna Marie Fisker, Asmus Gamdrup, Susanne Højlund, Jan Krag Jacobsen, Kirsten Rohde Jensen, René Langdahl Jørgensen, Anne Kofoed, Jens Kondrup, Jonatan Leer, Claus Meyer, Ole G. This book connects clinical sociology to the food justice movement through gardens in incarcerated settings. Situated within the larger food justice movement, the authors highlight the shortcomings of the global food system and the inequalities produced by the lack of adequate nutrition, particularly in the context of marginalized populations, such as those in carceral institutions. The book provides an up-to-date overview of horticulture programs in different incarcerated settings in the US, including prisons and community correction units, and provides in-depth discussion on innovative best-practice models. It also features a detailed analysis of an ongoing multi-site research project on gardening in incarcerated settings for women at local, state, and federal levels. Unlike other literature on prison and jail horticulture, this book contextualizes gardening in incarcerated settings with critical historical analysis, presenting the theoretical background to sociological action research projects. Serving as a starting point for establishing gardening as an evidence-based practice in prisons and jails, it is essential reading for researchers and practitioners of clinical sociology and social work, criminologists, prison and corrective institution administrators, and citizen groups interested in therapeutic gardening and alternatives to industrial prison food.
The book offers a multi-scale, epistemically diverse, and sense-making perspectives on the food system. The book argues that sustainable food system transformation is a complex proposition that can better thrive upon the inclusion of consumer perspectives. The book brings together scholarly works of critical scholars and practitioners who bring to bear the uniqueness of places, cultures, histories and interactions in the milieu of food.

Poverty and Food Insecurity in Africa: The Voice of the Voiceless is an insightful book on the true financial state of Africa and how it has affected the food security of Africans. The author, Dr. Tarla, grew up in the North-West Province of Cameroon with parents who were experienced farmers. He had personal knowledge of how his father's business prospered and how they lived comfortably until economic troubles and food poverty struck all of Africa. This book provides a thorough discussion of the ideas of food security, food insecurity, and food sovereignty. It also covers the production limiting factors and the three pillars of food security in Africa: availability, access, stability, and utilization. Biofuel, water, and oil have a significant impact on food production costs. If these three resources are properly managed, the price of food might even go down. Another method of addressing food insecurity is to properly use genetic engineering in plant cultivation. Africa must look within itself and take specific steps to exploit its resources to combat poverty and food insecurity.
'There is no author whose books I look forward to more' BILL GATESIn this ambitious, myth-busting book, leading scientist and internationally bestselling author Vaclav Smil investigates many of the burning questions facing the world today:Why are some of the world's biggest food producers also the countries with the most undernourished populations? Why is food waste a colossal 1,000kcal per person daily, and how can we solve that?Could we all go vegan and be healthy? Should we?How will we feed the ballooning population without killing the planet? How Food Really Works shows how we misunderstand the essentials of where our food really comes from, how our dietary requirements shape us, and why this impacts our planet in drastic ways. Ultimately, this data-based, rigorously researched guide explains how we will survive and thrive long into the future.'There is perhaps no other academic who paints pictures with numbers like Smil' GUARDIAN

"An invitation to pivot how we address hunger in America, rooted in the personal, political, and spiritual work critical to making change"--
This book presents and discusses some of the problems that are increasingly emerging today in our relationship with food as well as in our style of eating and drinking. The first three chapters focuses on issues concerning eating, and on our relationship with what we can eat. The fourth chapter deals with the act of drinking, with our relationship with water, and discusses justice aspects in the use of water. The main idea is that the acts of eating and drinking are to be understood as relationships, i.e. as a way human beings relate to other beings. As such, they can be performed ethically well or badly. Therefore, an ethics of eating and of drinking should be developed. Not only the book highlights some key ethical problems associated with the act of eating and drinking, yet it also describes some ethically sustainable solutions to them. It ends with a list of reflections, which are intended to guide our choices in the relations with food and drinks with a normative approach. Mainly written for university students and researchers in the field of applied ethics, this book will also offer an inspiring reading to a wider audience of academics and professionals.
For fans of Michael Pollan and Anthony Bourdain, this “surprising, flavorsome tour of ancient cuisines” (Kirkus STARRED)—from Neolithic bread to ancient Roman fish sauce—reveals why reviving the foods of the past is the key to saving the future.“A fascinating look at the people who are keeping these ancient food traditions alive against the odds, while offering a rough roadmap toward a more sustainable food ecosystem.”—EaterMany of us are worried (or at least we should be) about the impacts of globalization, pollution, and biotechnology on our diets. Whether it's monoculture crops, hormone-fed beef, or high-fructose corn syrup, industrially-produced foods have troubling consequences for us and the planet. But as culinary diversity diminishes, many people are looking to a surprising place to safeguard the future: into the past. The Lost Supper explores an idea that is quickly spreading among restaurateurs, food producers, scientists, and gastronomes around the world: that the key to healthy and sustainable eating lies not in looking forward, but in looking back to the foods that have sustained us through our half-million-year existence as a species.Acclaimed author Taras Grescoe introduces readers to the surprising and forgotten flavors whose revival is captivating food-lovers around the world: ancient sourdough bread last baked by Egyptian pharaohs; raw-milk farmhouse cheese from critically endangered British dairy cattle; ham from Spanish pata negra pigs that have been foraging on acorns on a secluded island since before the United States was a nation; and olive oil from wild olive trees uniquely capable of resisting quickly evolving pests and modern pathogens. From Ancient Roman fish sauce to Aztec caviar to the long-thought-extinct silphium, The Lost Supper is a deep dive into the latest frontier of global gastronomy—the archaeology of taste. Through vivid writing, history, and first-hand culinary experience, Grescoe sets out a provocative case: in order to save these foods, he argues, we've got to eat them.Published in partnership with the David Suzuki Institute.

The British know nothing about Botswana because it seldom gets a mention in the press; and because it's 'simply not interesting'. So says Alfred Dube, Botswana's High Commissioner in London. As a generalisation, he may be right. But turn the coin and realise that many thousands of people in Britain, with no direct contact with this country, owe their knowledge of it to a single person, Naomi Mitchison, its one time, self appointed, prolific publicist and unofficial ambassador.Articles rarely appear in the British press today for the simple reason that Naomi is in her mid 90s and no longer provides them. Unsurprisingly, no one of equivalent abilities and interests has stepped forward to fill her shoes. Perhaps they realised what little value the government placed on Naomi's earlier efforts. She may have been an irritant to many. But how many of the newly independent states of Africa had a friend like her? Someone who had the contacts, the ability and the motivation to argue a point, paint an image or present a human need. -- Sandy Grant, 1995
With almost seven hundred articles included in this series, it is not surprising to learn that political thinking, anecdote, frustration and reflection appear across the spectrum and therefore are not exclusive to this volume. Those brought together here - dating from as early as 1923 in Fascist Italy, through more than 60 years, to the lack of women in the U.K Parliament - show an underlying belief which educates and informs much of her other writing. This volume also contains the full text of The Moral Basic of Politics, originally published separately in 1938, on the eve of World War II.

In March 2018, 40,000 farmers, overwhelmingly Adivasis, marched 182 kilometres from Nashik to Mumbai, across hill and dale, in blistering heat. Mostly barefoot, some with bleeding feet, these farmers had converged on the megapolis under the banner of the All-India Kisan Sabha to berate their government for its many betrayals of their demands. The farmers won the hearts and sympathies of an often apathetic and unsympathetic urban population which was moved by their heroism, dignity, and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. While the Kisan Long March is relatively better known, the long history of organizing that preceded it is not. For instance, most people outside Maharashtra are not aware of a historic strike by farmers the previous summer. Nor are most aware of the long history of kisan struggles in Maharashtra, going back over a century. Farmers on the Move is a rare and valuable account of the dogged, persevering, and creative tactics and strategy that went into organizing kisans. Full of ups and downs, hopes and heartbreaks, it is a moving story of human tenacity and the triumph of the spirit.
This unique volume gives insight into the science of slaughter with in-depth discussion of neural communication and the welfare aspects of pre-slaughter handling and slaughter of livestock. The concepts of conscious perception, unconsciousness, stunning, slaughter and death are discussed to provide readers with an understanding of the different events that lead to the conversion of animals into carcasses and subsequently into meat. This accessible work is an excellent resource for learning about welfare issues of different techniques, as it includes historical aspects of religious and conventional slaughter with a focus on the developments around technologies. It comprises the advent of mechanical slaughter in the form of poleaxes to present day use of sophisticated stunning equipment. Moreover, the author covers key aspects of halal meat production and discusses the politics of religious slaughter with an emphasis on the increasing number of anti-halal movements across Europe, America and others. The slaughter of animals for consumption by people of faith is economically significant and has led to a race for market share by multinational retail enterprises. However, there are also ethical and political aspects of religious slaughter which have always divided opinion. The topic of this book provides an important link to the disciplines of animal welfare research, the meat industry and the food business. Scientists, students, as well as government agencies, veterinarians and professionals in food processing and slaughter technology manufacturing will find this an important account. Simplified summaries and practical notes make this reference highly readable.

The definitive case for radically rethinking humanity's relationship with other animals - for the good of us all. 'The book that had the most impact on me' JANE GOODALL'Probably the single most influential document in the history of ... animal welfare' GUARDIANIn 1975, Animal Liberation started a global movement when it uncovered the abuse of animals in factory farms and laboratories and showed these horrific practices to be morally indefensible. In the decades since, science has vindicated Peter Singer's arguments about animal sentience, plant-based diets have become mainstream and his landmark book has changed millions of minds. And yet, for animals, the situation has grown worse.Fully rewritten for the twenty-first century, Animal Liberation Now reveals these new developments and refines its arguments to address the pressing problems of today, including the impact of meat consumption on the climate emergency and the spread of lethal new viruses. A book of galvanising power and importance, it shows that the need to radically rethink our relationship with animals is more pressing than ever.'Will motivate a new generation of readers who are resolutely committed to creating a just society for all' JOAQUIN PHOENIX'The indispensable foundational text for the movement, new and updated' J.
