From Garrett M. From the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter who first exposed the roots of the opioid epidemic and the secretive world of the Sackler family behind Purdue Pharma, Pain Killer is the celebrated landmark story of corporate greed and government negligence that inspired an upcoming Netflix series. "Groundbreaking . . . Pain Killer is the shocking account of the origins of today's opioid epidemic, the creators of this plague, and the way to help stop it."-Sam Quinones, author of Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic Between 1999 and 2017, an estimated 250,000 Americans died from overdoses involving prescription painkillers, a plague ignited by Purdue Pharma's aggressive marketing of OxyContin. Families, working class and wealthy, have been torn apart, businesses destroyed, and public officials pushed to the brink. Meanwhile, the drugmaker's owners, Raymond and Mortimer Sackler, whose names adorn museums worldwide, made enormous fortunes from the commercial success of OxyContin. In Pain Killer, Barry Meier tells the story of how Purdue turned OxyContin into a billion-dollar blockbuster. Powerful narcotic painkillers, or opioids, were once used as drugs of last resort for pain sufferers. But Purdue launched an unprecedented marketing campaign claiming that the drug's long-acting formulation made it safer to use than traditional painkillers for many types of pain. That illusion was quickly shattered as drug abusers learned that crushing an Oxy could release its narcotic payload all at once. Even in its prescribed form, Oxy proved fiercely addictive. As OxyContin's use and abuse grew, Purdue concealed what it knew from regulators, doctors, and patients. Here are the people who profited from the crisis and those who paid the price, those who plotted in boardrooms and those who tried to sound alarm bells. A country doctor in rural Virginia, Art Van Zee, took on Purdue and warned officials about OxyContin abuse. An ebullient high school cheerleader, Lindsey Myers, was reduced to stealing from her parents to feed her escalating Oxy habit. A hard-charging DEA official, Laura Nagel, tried to hold Purdue executives to account. In Pain Killer, Barry Meier breaks new ground in his decades-long investigation into the opioid epidemic. He takes readers inside Purdue to show how long the company withheld information about the abuse of OxyContin and gives a shocking account of the Justice Department's failure to alter the trajectory of the opioid epidemic and protect thousands of lives. Equal parts crime thriller, medical detective story, and business exposé, Pain Killer is a hard-hitting look at how a supposed wonder drug became the gateway drug to a national tragedy.

"In this thoughtful, moving, and well-written book, Dan Ariely narrates his personal and professional journey to understand the world of misbelievers and conspiracy theories, and offers insights and tips that will hopefully help all of us protect our fragile social fabric from being torn apart by disinformation and distrust."--Yuval Harari, bestselling author of Sapiens"Misbelief is an urgent examination of the human attraction to misinformation. This timely book can provide a crucial foundation for building a more empathetic and informed society."--Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Power of RegretThe renowned social scientist, professor, and bestselling author of Predictably Irrational delivers his most urgent and compelling book--an eye-opening exploration of the human side of the misinformation crisis--examining what drives otherwise rational people to adopt deeply irrational beliefs.Misinformation affects all of us on a daily basis--from social media to larger political challenges, from casual conversations in supermarkets, to even our closest relationships. While we recognize the dangers that misinformation poses, the problem is complex--far beyond what policing social media alone can achieve--and too often our limited solutions are shaped by partisan politics and individual interpretations of truth. In Misbelief, preeminent social scientist Dan Ariely argues that to understand the irrational appeal of misinformation, we must first understand the behavior of "misbelief"--the psychological and social journey that leads people to mistrust accepted truths, entertain alternative facts, and even embrace full-blown conspiracy theories. Misinformation, it turns out, appeals to something innate in all of us--on the right and the left--and it is only by understanding this psychology that we can blunt its effects. Grounded in years of study as well as Ariely's own experience as a target of disinformation, Misbelief is an eye-opening and comprehensive analysis of the psychological drivers that cause otherwise rational people to adopt deeply irrational beliefs. Utilizing the latest research, Ariely reveals the key elements--emotional, cognitive, personality, and social--that drive people down the funnel of false information and mistrust, showing how under the right circumstances, anyone can become a misbeliever.Yet Ariely also offers hope. Even as advanced artificial intelligence has become capable of generating convincing fake news stories at an unprecedented scale, he shows that awareness of these forces fueling misbelief make us, as individuals and as a society, more resilient to its allure. Combating misbelief requires a strategy rooted not in conflict, but in empathy. The sooner we recognize that misbelief is above all else a human problem, the sooner we can become the solution ourselves.

"Journalists Shane Burley and Ben Lorber present a sorely-needed progressive and intersectional approach to the vital question: What can we do about antisemitism? From online trolling of Jews by the 'alt-right' to synagogue shootings by white nationalists to the spread of QAnon and George Soros conspiracy theories, antisemitism is a fixture of U.S. politics today. Its rise is part and parcel of growing exclusionary nationalist movements - putting multiracial democracy itself at risk. At the same time, conversations about antisemitism are more polarized than ever. How is antisemitism connected to anti-Blackness, xenophobia, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, and other forms of oppression? How do we build the coalitions and movements we need to fight it all together? Why is it important to distinguish between legitimate criticism of Israel's oppression of Palestinians and antisemitism? Using personal stories, historical deep-dives, front-line reporting, and interviews with leading change-makers, Lorber and Burley help the reader understand how antisemitism works, what's at stake in contemporary debates, and how we can build true safety in solidarity"--
Medical experimentation has been happening for more than seventy-five years in modern countries. We are aware of the experiments that occurred in Germany during WWII, but these were not the only times such experiments took place. After the war, many of the doctors that were guilty of medical travesties were brought to North America to continue their studies on human subjects. This is the story of one man and his family who became the system's victim. Robert suffered for most of his life with the debilitating illness labelled "schizophrenia." His nightmare began while enlisted in the Air Force during World War II and continued throughout the 1950s when the worst of the treatments for this illness were devised: Insulin coma therapy, electroshock treatments, prolonged ice-cold baths, turpentine injections, LSD, sodium pentothal and other psychotropic drugs. He was witty and intelligent with the ability to build complex electrical devices with nothing except what he could scavenge from the town dump and a few purchased tubes and knobs. He wrote poetry and built a keyboard piano from a sheet of glass. His Christmas lights flashed in rhythm to records playing on the phonograph turntable. He had many talents and gifts that were stolen from him because of the torturous treatments he endured while a patient in several mental hospitals in two provinces, one of which was the first workplace of Dr. Ewen Cameron of MK-ULTRA and CIA fame. Dr. Cameron went on to become one of the most infamous perpetrators of inhumane treatment toward the mentally ill. This is the story of how Robert's family used music, laughter and escapism to co-exist in a tiny shack in the far north. It is an inspiration to anyone faced with similar family dynamics. There was no counselling available to this family, but they survived in spite of the obstacles they faced living with a father so incapacitated by mental and multiple physical disabilities. Unfortunately, medical experimentation has never stopped even after "deinstitutionalization" and the release of mentally ill patients, often to the streets. This book contains lists of the horrific experiments that continue to this day under the misnamed banner of "health research." EARLY REVIEWS Informative, Well-written Memoir 5 starsChris CennedyThis review is from: Delusions of Daddy>Excellent Book 5 starsMelissa L. BernierThis was a heartwarming account of a daughter's love for her father it took decades for her to understand. An excellent read.
This book describes strange encounters in the middle of the night, and odd happenings on the side of remote, isolated roadsides. It's the stuff of both dreams and nightmares: non-human entities suddenly intervening in the lives of hapless individuals. The accounts are harrowing and often distressing. Some say that those creatures perpetrating so-called alien abductions are visitors from other stars. Others, however, have developed the theory that they are none other than the fallen angels of biblical times, here in the modern, technological guise of interstellar visitors. This book deals with both these theories and the alleged eyewitness accounts that have led to both interpretations. And while there have been plenty of civilian UFO encounters, it is the men and women of our military who most often find themselves on the front line of this great mystery. Most of those who don the uniform are no better prepared for these encounters than anyone else, and they face the additional difficulty of having to report to their superiors in the aftermath of such odd incidents. In documenting these accounts, this book is not seeking to convince anyone of anything. All of these alleged events are left open to the reader's own interpretation. But while you make up your own mind on the subject, here we present to you the fantastic and bizarre claims as well as the sometimes equally shocking known truths-that comprise the strange anecdotes of military encounters with UFOs.
The most compelling, most absurd and most shocking conspiracy theories in one stunningly illustrated hardback edition. 22 November, 1963: Dallas, Texas. US President John F Kennedy is assassinated as his motorcade passes through the city's streets. The assassin is soon captured, and revealed to be disaffected Communist symapthizer Lee Harvey Oswald. Did Oswald have help, and if so, who from? The Bilderberg Group: simply a group of international financiers concerned to promote democracy throughout the world, or is there a more sinister power at work? And what really happened to Princess Diana's Mercedes in the Paris underpass? Conspiracy theories arise out of the belief that mysterious forces are conspiring behind the scenes to control and manipulate an unsuspecting public. In times gone by, the prime movers behind conspiracies would have been seen as Satanists, witches, anarchists; modern conspiracy theorists, however, are more usually keen to blame the CIA. The fact that the CIA has been proven beyond doubt to have been involved in conspiracies simply strengthens their hand. Conspiracies looks at a range of the most interesting theories of this nature, from the risibly far-fetched, such as the belief that the world is run by the lizard people, to the only-too-true and tragic such as the overthrow and murder of Chilean President Salvador Allende.
The “gripping” (The Atlantic) story of five families shattered by pernicious, pervasive conspiracy theories, and how we might set ourselves free from a crisis that could haunt American life for generations.“Excellent . . . This is the intimate side of the cold civil war America has been stuck in for nearly a decade.”—Michelle Goldberg, The New York Times “SHED MY DNA”: three excruciating words uttered by a QAnon-obsessed mother, once a highly respected lawyer, to her only son, once the closest person in her life. QAnon beliefs and adjacent conspiracy theories have had devastating political consequences as they’ve exploded in popularity. What’s often overlooked is the lasting havoc they wreak on our society at its most basic and intimate level—the family. In The Quiet Damage, celebrated reporter Jesselyn Cook paints a harrowing portrait of the vulnerabilities that have left so many of us susceptible to outrageous falsehoods promising order, purpose, and control. Braided throughout are the stories of five American families: an elderly couple whose fifty-year romance takes a heartbreaking turn; millennial sisters of color who grew up in dire poverty—one to become a BLM activist, the other, a hardcore conspiracy theorist pulling her little boy down the rabbit hole with her; a Bay Area hippie-type and her business-executive fiancé, who must decide whether to stay with her as she turns into a stranger before his eyes; evangelical parents whose simple life in a sleepy suburb spirals into delusion-fueled chaos; and a rural mother-son duo who, after carrying each other through unspeakable tragedy, stop speaking at all as ludicrous untruths shatter a bond long thought unbreakable.Charting the arc of each believer’s path from their first intersection with conspiracy theories to the depths of their cultish conviction, to—in some cases—their rejection of disinformation and the mending of fractured relationships, Cook offers a rare, intimate look into the psychology of how and why ordinary people come to believe the unbelievable. Profound, brilliantly researched, and beautifully written, The Quiet Damage lays bare how we have been taken hostage by grifters peddling lies built on false hope—and how we might release our loved ones, and ourselves, from their grasp.
