The book explores, through a reflection on food, the complexity of the concept of well-being. It starts from the consideration that food is a fundamental element for human well-being, and for well-being of the planet as a whole. Not only does food guarantee the survival of human beings, it is also a cultural expression. With regard to the Italian socio-cultural context, the contributors explore how food relates to aspects such as history, tradition, new food styles, health, and the old and new technologies used to produce food. The studies in the book do not simply analyse indicators to illustrate the Italian situation in the "here and now". As part of the tradition of studies on social indicators, they provide valid and well-founded indications to contribute to an improvement in the quality of life for years to come. This work on the theme of food represents a very useful contribution to the general reflection on well-being and its statistical, sociological, and multidisciplinary study, due to the importance historically given to food in Italy and the socio-cultural implications of food in various life contexts.
The book Profiles of Anthropological Praxis is something of a sequel to Anthropological Praxis: Translating Knowledge into Action, published in 1987 (Westview Press).¿ As a casebook of anthropological projects, the new version shares a fascinating breadth of award-winning projects undertaken by applied anthropologists to address the needs of an array of stakeholders and situations. Each chapter will describe a problem and how a project attempted to address it with the following structure: Problem Overview, Project Description, Anthropologist¿s Role and Impact, Outcomes, and the Anthropological Difference ¿ that is, how the unique approaches of anthropology were effectively applied to address human problems.
Stephen Ward combines history and evolutionary psychology for a comprehensive view of the social irrationality plaguing democracies. Human nature has both extreme Darwinian traits promoting competition and sociable traits of cooperation and empathy. When social tensions trigger the former, they become maladaptive and dangerous.
This book describes how reliability can be embedded into the product development using a design methodology that uses parametric accelerated lifecycle testing (ALT) .The book has these features:¿ A new reliability methodology, based on inferential statistics, that can determine whether the reliability of a mechanical/civil system is achieved.¿ A unique reliability methodology to prevent reliability disasters in new mechanical products in the field, e.g., automobiles and airplanes.¿ Robust design methodology of mechanical/civil product to withstand a variety of loads.¿ Explanation of an alternative experimental Taguchi methodology.¿ Discussion of how parametric ALT can alsobe used to predict product reliability¿lifetime and failure rate.¿ Detailed case studies that demonstrate parametric ALT methodology. This book will be useful for senior-level undergraduate and graduate students, professional engineers, college and university-level lecturers, researchers, and design managers in mechanical and civil engineering.
It is a requirement of most universities that all Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degree students undertake an individual student dissertation research on a relevant and approved topic after successful completion of the taught course component. Such a research study is expected to culminate into a dissertation report which is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the respective degree. It is a requirement of life that managers and employees conduct research to yield solutions to the myriad of problems they encounter in their jobs. To ensure consistency and uniformity (i.e., standardization) in this very important academic exercise, a comprehensive manual to be used by both students and their supervisors and the examiners becomes imperative. Much of the information in this handbook is based on the template from the Centre for Lifelong Education of the Copperbelt University and other sources which were deemed to be relevant to its production.

Prof. Dr. Gisela Schoch, geboren am 12. Januar 1936, verstarb 2021 in Norddeutschland.
The origin of language and its relationship with human evolution, and its consequences have been subjects of study for centuries. Scholars wishing to study the origins of language must draw inferences from evidence such as the fossil record, archaeological evidence, contemporary language diversity, studies of language acquisition, and comparisons between human language and systems of communication existing among animals Many argue that the origins of language probably relate closely to the origins of modern human behavior, but there is little agreement about the facts and implications of this connection. This book deals with the subtle nuances of the origin and growth of English Language.
Ten country-based case studies explore how responses to the COVID-19 pandemic shaped, and were shaped by, family life. Research with families reveals how they coped with lockdown laws, dealt with worry and got to grips with online work. The book gives an international perspective on a global phenomenon that transformed everyday life for millions.
This handbook provides contributions by some of the world-leading experts in the field on recent phenomena and trends in transnational terrorism.Based on the methodological approach of a trend-and-key factor analysis of transnational terrorism and processed on the virtual platform "Foresight Strategy Cockpit" (FSC), the volume seeks to examine what potential future variants of transnational terrorism may evolve. Focusing on the latest structural developments in the sphere of politically or religiously motivated violence, the handbook considers the tactical, strategic, and not least the systemic dimension of terrorism. Divided into seven thematic sections, the handbook's contributions cover a wide range of issues, dealing among others with strategic and hybrid terrorism, the systemic dimension of extremist violence, prevalent actors, counter-narratives, the crime terror-nexus, the role of digitalization and the spiral dynamic between Islamist and right-wing terrorism. The expert contributions provide a condensed overview of current developments, structural linkages and important academic debates centering around transnational salafi-jihadi terrorism, but also right-wing terrorism and counter-terrorism. A key objective of the work is to make the effects of prevention/preemption, (de-) radicalization and (non-) intervention both transparent and assessable. As such, it contributes well-founded strategies, feasible solutions and options for policy-makers and counter-terrorism experts. This volume will be of great interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, political violence and security studies.
The new volume from the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry examines how qualitative research is changing in and responding to time of wholesale, seismic global change. It shows the role qualitative inquiry can play in issues of social justice and how we live in the world in times of unprecedented change.
This book examines some of the major and most commonly used methods and statistics necessary for social science research. It is meant primarily for the beginners, and hence does not require any prior training in research methodology or statistics. The methods discussed include aggregate data analysis, the method of survey research, experimental and quasi-experimental research designs, participant observation, content analysis, and focus groups study. In a separate chapter the issue of quantitative and qualitative research methods and their uses has been discussed. An attempt has been made to assess these methods especially from the point of view of their adoption and application by social scientists working in the developing economies.Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Bhutan)
¿This book is a remarkable achievement¿ Gerd GigerenzerThis book offers practical approaches to working in a new field of knowledge - Civic Statistics - which sets out to engage with, and overcome well documented and long-standing problems in teaching quantitative skills. The book includes 23 peer-reviewed chapters, written in coordination by an international group of experts from ten countries. The book aims to support and enhance the work of teachers and lecturers working both at the high school and tertiary (university) levels. It is designed to promote and improve the critical understanding of quantitative evidence relevant to burning social issues ¿ such as epidemics, climate change, poverty, migration, natural disasters, inequality, employment, and racism.Effective citizen engagement with social issues requires active participation and a broad understanding of data and statistics about societal issues. However, many statistics curricula are not designed to teach relevant skills nor to improve learners' statistical literacy. Evidence about social issues is provided to the public via print and digital media, official statistics offices, and other information channels, and a great deal of data is accessible both as aggregated summaries and as individual records. Chapters illustrate the approaches needed to teach and promote the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and enabling processes associated with critical understanding of Civic Statistics presented in many forms. These include: statistical analysis of authentic multivariate data; use of dynamic data visualisations; deconstructing texts about the social and economic well-being of societies and communities. Chapters discuss: the development of curricula and educational resources; use of emerging technologies and visualizations; preparation of teachers and teaching approaches; sources for relevant datasets and rich texts about Civic Statistics; ideas regarding future research, assessment, collaborations between different stakeholders; and other systemic issues.
