The Social Contract between the Generations is the visible and invisible contract that binds generations together in caring for children, educating children and young adults, and providing for elderly parents. Yet the balance between the generations in Denmark – and the rest of the world – is undergoing dynamic changes, putting the social contract up for debate and renegotiation. There is a need for a new understanding –particularly between the young generation and the old – in anticipation of pension, labor market, healthcare and economic reforms. Bjarne Hastrup pinpoints the wide spectrum of options to consider when creating a new social contract, that will benefit future generations. He reviews the history and the future foundations of the social contract and proposes strategic tools for the debate.

This book examines the lives of children and young adults living in residential care systems in Zimbabwe and their unique conceptualization of family. While the importance of family for the development and wellbeing of children can't be overemphasized, the questions of what and who counts as family to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) are under-researched. Gwenzi brings a social constructionist approach to study OVCs in institutional care as well as living with their families in Zimbabwe, finding that they do not have a single definition of family and that they use diverse characteristics to describe what family means to them. With the data suggesting a need for belonging, continuity of relationships, protection, and trust, this study makes recommendations for policy and practice with youth in alternative care in sub-Saharan Africa.

This edited volume investigates the effects of shifting configurations and conceptualizations of the experience and meaning of home as it is embodied in early childhood care and education (ECCE). As the globalized early learning agenda drives more children to attend ECCE institutions, these institutions increasingly employ the concept of home through their curriculum and daily operations by attempting to foster a homelike environment or by incorporating items from children's homes into play. Chapters seek to recognize the complexity of a concept that is often taken for granted by exploring ways of being and thinking that share an interest in the notion of home. Authors offer multiple lenses and approaches to make sense of home as a conceptual space that operates in complex and often interrelated ways, including as an intellectual space, a built environment, a disciplinary technology, and a threshold.

This book explores the connection between family structure and circumstances, parental engagement, and adolescent sexual behavior. Given that South Africa contains the highest portion of the global HIV epidemic within a single country, a comprehensive, book-length investigation intösometimes risky¿adolescent sexual behaviour is necessary. Drawing from the longitudinal Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS) of more than 4,000 adolescents between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two, as well as qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with parents and adolescents, this study pioneers empirical investigation of adolescent sexual behavior within the intricate framework of family dynamics in South Africa.

The present research deals with the policies directed at young adults on social assistance without vocational training (YAS). Drawing on data collected within cantonal administrations and providers of integration (Basel-City and Geneva) as well as interviews with YAS, the publication analysis cantonal social policies and their moral underpinnings. In Switzerland, there is an ongoing strategical shift in the field of youth policies that emphasizes educational integra- tion as a first and primary integration step. This policy shift has implications for the strategical scope of the cantons. The focus on "education first" as a guideline dictates an approach, which follows an intertwined neo-liberal and paternalistic discourse: On the one hand, social policies are designed as investment to avoid a long-term labour market exclusion of the YAS. On the other hand, these policies are legitimized via narratives that construct the YAS as irresponsible and dependent - not yet ready to enter adulthood. In doing so, social policies create and reproduce structural vulnerabilities related to dominant moral values like reinforcing the work ethics of young welfare beneficiaries.

Da der österreichische Staat die Fürsorge von Holocaust-Überlebenden verweigerte, lag die Verantwortung bei der jüdischen Gemeinde selbst. Der Fokus des Werkes liegt auf der Stadt Wien im Zeitraum zwischen 1945 und 2012, einer Periode, die gekennzeichnet war von den sehr unterschiedlichen Bedürfnissen der Holocaust-Überlebenden, der Remigrierten und neu Zugewanderten. Beleuchtet werden Formen der klassischen Zedaka, der Armenfürsorge sowie der Wandel zur professionellen Sozialen Arbeit. Die jüdische Gemeinde verfügte zunächst nicht über adäquate Mittel, weshalb es erst spät zur Professionalisierung kam, die in der Gründung des psychosozialen Zentrums ESRA mündete. Die deskriptive Quellendarlegung belegt sowohl anhand von personenbezogenen archivalischen Akten als auch von medialen, dokumentarischen und mündlichen Materialien den Bedarf der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Wien an Fürsorge und Sozialer Arbeit.As the Austrian state refused to care for Holocaust survivors, the responsibility lay with the Jewish community itself. The focus of the Vienna-related work is on the time between 1945 and 2012, a period that was characterized by the very different needs of Holocaust survivors, remigrants and new immigrants. Forms of classical Zedaka, care for the poor and the transformation to professional social work throughout this period are examined. The descriptive depiction of sources illustrates the needs of the Jewish Community (IKG) Vienna for welfare and social work on the basis of personal archival files as well as media, documentary and oral materials.

Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child establishes the right to participation: children and adolescents are entitled to participate and to have their views taken into account in all issues affecting them in accordance to their age and maturity. The volume explores this right to participation in residential care. The impact of participation and complaint procedures in residential care facilities are evaluated by means of crucial results from an empirical study. This book considers the responses of states to migrant girls who are separated from family and enter state care systems as unaccompanied or trafficked young people. The book draws on research with girls and social work practitioners in the UK to explore what can happen when separated girls encounter professionals at borders and within care systems. It considers how separated girls adapt to different ideas of what it means to be a girl in destination countries, and how this is affected by their other intersecting identities. The book identifies how girls can feel welcomed, but also how young migrants can be seen in excluding ways. It argues that narratives of the fragile 'refugee child' are unhelpful ways to understand individual girls. Using theories and clear language relevant to both academics and practitioners, the author fills a gap in the research on migrant and trafficked young women who frequently represent the minority in care systems globally. 

This book analyzes children's agency as interactional achievement in formal and informal contexts of education and illuminates how agency can be encouraged and supported in these educational contexts. Taking a sociological approach, the author deals with children as social agents rather than learners and considers structures of interaction which encourage and support agency, rather than teaching. The book draws from field research conducted over more than twenty years in a variety of Italian and international contexts. This book is unique in providing a theoretical reflection on the social structures that can support children's agency, as well as a large amount of examples which show how these structures and agency work. 

This book centralizes the importance of using culturally relevant models within health promoting schools (HPS) to promote the participation of Black students. In current HPS models Black students are often overlooked. The author presses beyond the mainstream, science-focused research on HPS to grapple with issues of power, prejudice, and oppression and focus on the social determinants of health. By focusing on social constructs as a constraint to Black students¿ wellbeing (rather than only disease), chapters present a multidimensional whole-school intervention aimed at comprehensively bridging the empowerment gap between Black students and historically privileged students.

Partizipation oder auch Kinder- und Jugendbeteiligung beziehen sich u. a. auf eine unterschiedlich umfänglich alltagsgerichtete Teilhabe von jungen Menschen und eine zukunftsorientierte Demokratiebildung. Bei der fast schon inflationären Verwendung des Begriffs "Partizipation" bleibt jedoch häufig unklar, was darunter verstanden wird oder werden soll. Eingebettet in den gesellschaftlichen Kontext der Demokratie als Herrschaftsform wird das dualistische Verhältnis von Partizipation als Chance für Entscheidungsbetroffene versus Partizipation als Instrument der Herrschenden aufgezeigt. Denn auch wenn Partizipation im öffentlichen Diskurs verspricht, eine Möglichkeit des Mitredens und -wirkens zu sein, muss sie nicht zwangsläufig auf Veränderung zielen, sondern kann gleichermaßen bestehende Ungleichheitssysteme stabilisieren. Mit Blick auf Kindheit gilt es besonders die Ungleichheit von Akteur*innen innerhalb der generationalen Ordnung hervorzuheben. Es wird sich mit der Frage auseinandergesetzt, wie Partizipation unter Ungleichen innerhalb dieser generationalen Verortungen und der damit verbunden asymmetrischen Sozialisationsarrangements überhaupt gelingen kann und welchen Möglichkeitsräumen, Restriktionen und Gefahren des Machtmissbrauchs sie unterliegt.

This book explores how the increasing need for specific kinds of parental engagement impacts care-experienced young peoples' trajectories. Previous Australian studies have found that care-experienced young people demonstrate poorer outcomes in health, education, and the criminal justice system throughout their life course. However, this multi-layered case study is the first to specifically address barriers in obtaining higher education¿an effective tool for social mobility. In particular, the authors unpack how university marketing relies on young people to have a parent who understands tertiary education transitions to help them navigate post-school pathways to careers or higher education, as well as how policies might fail to help students who do not have such a figure in their lives. The authors offer suggestions for policy change in Australia while providing a basis for global comparisons and recommendations for how care-experienced young people and their support networks can overcome present challenges.

This edited volume covers issues related to educational research and practices for early childhood education and care (ECEC), highlighting interprofessional and family-professional collaboration within inclusive education in different cultural contexts. Contributors include authors from throughout Europe, including Lithuania, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Spain, UK, and Ukraine. This edited volume advances the conceptual framework of the 'everyday urban' to unpack the ways in which processes of modernity in India shape young subjects and, in so doing, centers the analytical categories of childhood and youth. In rejecting simplistic binaries of agency, and teleological logics of development and modernity, the authors focus on the complex pathways of negotiation and conflict that mark the lives of young people across various historical and contemporary contexts in urban India. Chapters are organized across two key themes: Shaping Modern Subjects and Being Modern Subjects, while spanning multiple disciplines including anthropology, history, sociology, disability studies, and psychology. Men hvis vi skal skabe de rette løsninger, skal vi have modet til at se det i øjnene, som ikke har fungeret. ”Jobcenterkrisen” er en undersøgelse af netop dette.Bogen inddrager stemmerne fra borgere og medarbejdere, såvel som kronikker og læserbreve igennem flere år.
