It was a brutally cold January day in the 1950s as Chick Gallin marched through his last week of training at the Probationary Fire School on Welfare Island, New York. When a full borough alarm sounded, he and the other trainees piled onto open trucks to respond. As they arrived on scene, building after building was on fire. As he stood in the heart of the chaotic scene, Gallin was officially initiated into an exciting yet dangerous life as a first responder. In a collection of true tales, Gallin shares a candid portrayal of the life of a New York City firefighter during two-plus decades. Throughout his anecdotes, he details what it is like to rush inside a burning, smoke-filled building and follow the hose to find an exit, deal with the fear of explosions, proceed through blackness to reach victims and then perform CPR, attempt to attain shut-eye between raising a young family and responding to alarms, inhale black smoke into the lungs, and precariously balance on an icy ladder in the lonely darkness of a windy night.A Fireman's Story shares true tales of a New York firefighter's experiences during his two-plus decades as a first responder.

"Reimagining Blue is a passionate and personal analysis of a misunderstood profession from the vantage point of female police chief Kristen Ziman. Ziman credits her colorful childhood for the temperament that led her to gravitate toward policing, a profession where chaos is all in a day's work. Many times, she learned life and leadership lessons through the revelation of what not to do. But nothing could have prepared Kristen for the turmoil that would unfold during her tenure. A mass shooting, a pandemic, and civil unrest that threatened the trusting relationship between her department and her community became her greatest professional challenges. This deeply moving memoir is a story of resilience and perseverance in policing--and in life. It's a raw and honest portrayal told by a flawed human about a noble profession suffering an identity crisis. Reimagining Blue is an urgent call to find a way forward, not because the system is broken, but because it can always be better."--Dust jacket flap.

When Scotland Yard's first detective branch was set up in 1842 crime was very different from today. The favoured murder weapon was the cut-throat razor; carrying a pocket watch was dangerous; the most significant clue at a murder scene could be the whereabouts of a candlestick or hat; large households (family, servants and lodgers) complicated many a case and servants sometimes murdered their masters.Detectives had few aids and suffered many disadvantages. The bloody handprints found at two early murder scenes were of no help, there being no way of telling whether blood (or hair) was human or animal. Fingerprinting was fifty years away, DNA profiling another hundred and photography was too new to help with identification. All reports had to be handwritten with a dip pen and ink and the only means of keeping contact with colleagues and disseminating information was by post, horseback or foot.In spite of these handicaps and severe press criticism, the detectives achieved some significant successes. Joan Lock includes such classic cases as the First Railway Murder, as well as many fascinating, fresh reports, weaving in new developments like the electric telegraph against a background of authentic Victorian police procedure.Charles Dickens said that Scotland Yard detectives gave the impression of leading lives of strong mental excitement. Readers of this book will understand why.Praise for Joan Lock...'Thorough account of important early cases dealt with by Scotland Yard.' - Professor B. J. Rahn'A better picture of the development of the detectives and the CID in the 19th century Metropolitan Police than any other book I have read.' - Alan Moss'Vivid detail' - Historical Novel SocietyJoan Lock is an ex-nurse and former policewoman. Joan has also written short stories, radio plays, radio documentaries and eight crime novels. She lives in London.

In 1878 the Criminal Investigation Department replaced Scotland Yard's corrupt and discredited Detective Branch. In this classic story of the early days of detection, Joan Lock tells the fascinating story of the creation of the CID, the scandal which preceded it, and the successes and failures of the new organization, including early cases such as the four murders by Ernest Southey, the ferocious outbreak of dockland killings in 1869 and the more familiar Bravo, Neill Cream and Jack the Ripper crimes.First World War spy and Dear John jealousy murders were followed by Roaring Twenties' swindles and the arrival of motor car bandits - which in turn led to the formation of the Flying Squad and the adoption of mobile wireless telegraphy. The introduction of women detectives is also discussed and the difficulties they experienced in establishing their place in a male dominated force.Joan Lock closes the gap between the academic police historian and the writer of popular true crime, making this book a fascinating read for crime experts and the general reader alike.

"An FBI veteran explains how the Mueller-Comey cabal turned the FBI from a "swear to tell the truth" law-enforcement agency to a politicized intelligence organization. Americans have lost faith in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an institution they once regarded as the world's greatest law-enforcement agency. Thomas Baker spent many years with the FBI and is deeply troubled by this loss of faith. Specific lapses have come to light and each is thoroughly discussed in this book: Why did they happen? What changed? The answer begins days after the 9/11 attacks when the FBI underwent a significant change in culture. To understand how far the Bureau has fallen, this book shows the crucial role played by the FBI and its agents in past decades. It was quite often, as the reader will see from these firsthand experiences, a fun-filled adventure with exciting skyjackings, kidnappings, and bank robberies. At the same time, the reader will see the reverence the Bureau had for the Constitution and the concern agents held for the rights of each American. This book is not mere memoir--it is history. From the shooting of President Reagan and the death of Princess Diana to the TWA 800 crash and even getting marching orders from St. Mother Teresa, Baker's story shows how the FBI has played a pivotal role in our country's history." --Amazon.com.

"Canadian laws are just, the police uphold the rule of law and treat everyone equally, and without the police, communities would descend into chaos and disorder. These entrenched myths, rooted in settler-colonial logic, work to obscure a hard truth: the police do not keep us safe. This edited collection brings together writing from a range of activists and scholars, whose words are rooted in experience and solidarity with those putting their lives on the line to fight for police abolition in Canada. Together, they imagine a different world--one in which police power is eroded and dissolved forever, one in which it is possible to respond to distress and harm with assistance and care."--

Critical incidents and career-altering traumas are daily risks that law enforcement officers must face. But, too often, officers turn to maladaptive habits to cope. Is there a better way? In Body, Mind, and Badge: Strategies for Navigating Trauma and Resilience in Law Enforcement, Dr. Kathryn Hamel, PhD, answers that question with a resounding "Yes!" The book focuses on two imperative components of law enforcement wellness: physical fitness and resiliency. Cultivating both enables personnel to mitigate the physical, mental, and emotional wear and tear that result from challenges of law enforcement. Part One covers Dr. Hamel's memories of shift work and her resulting personal journey to physical fitness. It also discusses research on the unique health issues of law enforcement personnel, the pervasiveness of stress in the field, and the importance of physical fitness as a mitigating factor.Additionally in Part One is the cautionary story of an unexpected and devastating injury to a young, fit officer by Chief Mike Hamel (Ret.). He includes his assessment of the functional movement screen/predictive injury test and how he successfully brought it to the Irvine PD as part of an overall fitness program to help prevent the physical, emotional, and economic costs of injuries to law enforcement personnel. In Part Two, Heather Williams, PsyD, discusses resiliency-what it is, why it's important for countering critical incidents, and how law enforcement personnel can integrate it into their lives. She proposes that law enforcement management help personnel build resilience by incorporating support systems into their organizations and by teaching inoculation training, hardiness training, psychoeducation, and cognitive-behavioral techniques like mindfulness. She also offers methods for individuals to build their own resiliency. In Part Three, retired and current police officers share their personal journeys to physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing. Officer John Darby (Ret.) and Chief Charles Celano (Ret.) relate how injury and illness, respectively, forced them into unexpected retirement. They share the methods they used to heal themselves physically and how they overcame the shock and resulting sorrow of careers cut short. And Officer Alex Mendoza, a nutritionist, Reiki II practitioner, health coach, and mindfulness teacher, shares numerous emotional and physical paths to wellness, a final reminder that physical fitness and resiliency will allow you to not just survive, but thrive, in your law enforcement career.
