The Federalist Papers is a collection of 85 articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the collective pseudonym Publius to promote the ratification of the Constitution of the United States.Written at a time when furious arguments were raging about the best way to govern America, The Federalist Papers had the immediate practical aim of persuading New Yorkers to accept the newly drafted Constitution in 1787. In this they were supremely successful, but their influence also transcended contemporary debate to win them a lasting place in discussions of American political theory. The Federalist Papers remain an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history and development of the United States. Scholars have long regarded this work as a milestone in political science and a classic of American political theory.

Power. Corruption. Another cycle of decline. If Thomas Jefferson were alive, he'd say the West is due for a revolution. If we do nothing, much of the world will either join the list of fallen empires or descend into dystopia. The good news is we need not refresh the tree of liberty with bloodshed. In this powerful book, Max Borders rouses us in a call to underthrow-an active mix of nonviolent resistance and innovative reforms, more powerful and more peaceful than rioters or armed revolutionaries. As Borders explains, we have the tools to topple an empire. But first, we must rediscover the wisdom of the American Founders.Despite overwhelming odds, a new breed of anti-authoritarians is finding its footing, standing firm on what Jefferson called "the consent of the governed." If you are disgusted by the world's drift toward central power, you'll find inspiration in this revolutionary book.
"This takedown of American gun culture argues that the nation's fathers did not intend the Second Amendment to guarantee an individual right to bear arms--and that this intentional distortion of the record is an urgent threat to democracy. Hundreds of lives are lost to firearms every day in America. The cost is more than the numbers--it is also the fear, the anxiety, the dread of public spaces that an armed society has created under the tortured rubric of freedom. But the norms of today are not the norms of American history or the values of its Founders. They are the product of a gun culture that has imposed its vision on a sleeping nation. Historian Dominic Erdozain argues that we have ... ceded the big-picture argument on guns. As we parse legislation on background checks and automatic weapons bans, we fail to ask: do individual gun rights have any place at all in American democracy? Taking readers on a ... historical journey, Erdozain shows how the Founders feared the tyranny of individuals as much as the tyranny of kings: the idea that any person had a right to walk around armed was anathema to their notion of freedom and the enduring republic they hoped to build"--

On becoming Prime Minister in May 2023, Anthony Albanese's very first commitment was that he would implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full. That statement encompasses a Voice to Parliament and Government, truth telling, treaty and some form of Aboriginal sovereignty or self-government. The Voice is the first and enabling step to these other demands. It is not, as Albanese claims, a modest change and 'just good manners'. If this referendum succeeds, it will be the most significant change the Constitution has ever undergone and it will be a major concession to Aborigines. It will entrench in the Constitution an eighth political entity alongside the Commonwealth and the States. But membership of this polity will be open only to members of one particular race. And it will not be content with merely issuing advice. It will, sooner rather than later, demand, and exercise, power in its own right. It will effectively, become a separate government for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This booklet will explain how that might come about. This proposal conflates two issues - advice to Parliament, and Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people. Much of the support for the latter aspect is based on a genuine and understandable sympathy for the history and plight of Aboriginal people. It is seen by many as long overdue recompense for wrongs past and present. But much of this sympathy is built on exaggerated claims and historical myths. This booklet will also examine the issue of Constitutional recognition. It will argue that if this is to happen, it should not be by means of the Voice.Peter O'Brien, a retired army officer, is a frequent contributor to Quadrant and Spectator magazines. He is also the author of Bitter Harvest - the illusion of Aboriginal agriculture in Bruce Pascoe's Dark Emu and Villain or Victim - a defence of Sir John Kerr and the Reserve Powers.
In 1995, an independent Constitution Review Commision appointed by the Fijian parliament, recommended wide-ranging changes to the Constitution. Its report formed the basis of a new Constitution promulgated, after wide-ranging consultation and debate, in 1997. Two years later, Fiji held a general election under it.

Our representative regime is an antidemocratic project, deliberate, voluntary, from the beginning, and the popular political impotence that it locks up is the primary cause of economic and social injustices.
This book provides an in-depth analysis of how constitutionalism and diversity can be friends and foes alike in contemporary multinational democracies. By focusing mainly on the dynamics between Quebec and Canada and comparing these with ongoing issues in Catalonia and Spain, Flanders and Belgium, and South Tyrol and Italy, the authors offer new insights into the public management of national diversity. In doing so, they sought to unpack the numerous challenges divided societies are facing. The pieces that together form the title of this book are not merely of symbolic significance. Constitutionalism v Diversity: Essays on Federal Democracy echoes the four underlying principles of the Canadian Constitution that the Supreme Court of Canada identified in its famous 1998 Reference re Secession of Quebec. These are (1) federalism, (2) democracy, (3) constitutionalism and the rule of law, and (4) protection of minorities. While these four concepts are at the very core of both authors' argument and approach, the Supreme Court of Canada's Secession Reference is guiding them through the book by providing a robust and meaningful theoretical and analytical framework. These principles appear as universal normative parameters societies should see as ideals to pursue and translate - while adapting their content to the specific context - into concrete institutions and practices. Even more today this book shows the great analytical value of these four principles to critically appraise of the way multinational liberal democracies in general and federal systems in particular are evolving.
