"How did Roman Republican writers use the metaphor of the body politic to respond to the downfall of the Republic and implementation of sole rule? This book's political approach to Latin literature will appeal broadly to audiences in philology, history, and political thought"--
This book examines the lasting impact of war on individuals and their communities in pre-modern Europe. Research on combat stress in the modern era regularly draws upon the past for inspiration and validation, but to date no single volume has effectively scrutinised the universal nature of combat stress and its associated modern diagnoses. Highlighting the methodological obstacles of using modern medical and psychological models to understand pre-modern experiences, this book challenges existing studies and presents innovative new directions for future research. With cutting-edge contributions from experts in history, classics and medical humanities, the collection has a broad chronological focus, covering periods from Archaic Greece (c. sixth and early fifth century BCE) to the British Civil Wars (seventeenth century CE). Topics range from the methodological, such as the dangers of retrospective diagnosis and the applicability of Moral Injury to the past, to the conventionally historical, examining how combat stress and post-traumatic stress disorder may or may not have manifested in different time periods. With chapters focusing on combatants, women, children and the collective trauma of their communities, this collection will be of great interest to those researching the history of mental health in the pre-modern period.
In this meticulously researched book, we embark on a journey through the Roman provinces to explore the intricate process of cultural fusion between Roman and native societies. Recent archaeological discoveries have confirmed the Romanization of regions like Gaul, where a new provincial cultural identity emerged through the blending of traditions. However, our attention turns to a compelling exception-Dacia, home to Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa, founded in 106 CE during Trajan's rule. Unlike the usual narrative of Romanization, Dacia's capital city raises questions and challenges our understanding of this process. Join us as we delve into the historical context, archaeological evidence, and the unique story of how Dacia's experience differed from the broader Romanization trend.

The year of the four emperors in AD 193 shows the cosmopolitan interconnectedness of the Roman Empire, yet scholarship has long framed the Severan dynasty in a narrative of descent stressing their North African and in particular their Syrian origins. The contributions of this volume question this conventional approach and instead examine more closely actual Severan policy in the Near East to detect potential local connections that determined this policy as well as how local communities and elites reacted to it. The volume thus explores new beginnings and old connections in the Roman Near East.
