We Rest Here Content is not the history of the Imperial Light Horse Regiment - that was written by the regiment's Intelligence Officer, Lieutenant George Fleming Gibson and published in 1937 as The Story of the Imperial Light Horse in the South African War 1899-1902. We Rest Here Content approaches the subject of the I.L.H. from a different viewpoint. It looks at all the known monuments and memorials as well as other accounts of I.L.H. involvement in the war.--

This book provides a contemporary overview of Boko Haram's activities. Since Boko Haram emerged in 2002, media-driven narratives as well as social scientific methodologies have been increasingly applied to draw generalisable conclusions on what goals the groups have pursued, what strategies it has used for these purposes and the counter campaign strategies authorities have pursued. But from 2009 to 2018, Boko Haram has pursued high-intensity violence: assassinations, bombing, kidnappings, beheading or threats of violence, conscriptions and territorial occupation. This makes it imperative to deepen and broaden our understanding of the groups¿ activities toward a problem-solving and policy-relevant analysis.Previously published in Security Journal Volume 33, issue 3, September 2020

How did the region of West Africa called Romarong become what we know as Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone? Romarong was a hotbed. The Mali Empire collapsed, and the Songhai came into prominence. There were the Arab and European slave trades. This story concludes when the British colonized the region. Exploring this anecdote from the natives' perspective fits Freddy Will's impression that Sierra Leone was part of the ancient Koya Empire. It also sheds light on the specific impacts of her numerous ethnic groups. It's a bold outing that showcases the heritage and correlates how the unique traditional and religious culture hitches the ethnic groups. It encompasses the history and culture of the ancient West African coastal and hinterland dwellers who emigrated and intermarried as the Trans-Saharan and Trans-Atlantic slave trades proceeded. The reader follows the journey of Mende, Temne, Susu, Malinke, Kisi, Loko, and Fulani people. The author gives this account, connecting the West African perspective with the liberated Blacks who arrived there.Romarong means "a place of wailers" or "land of tears." Horrid weather conditions, pandemics, tribal wars, human trafficking, the assimilation of Islam and Christianity, and colonization. Learn about the repatriation of freed Blacks from England, the United States, Canada, and the West Indies and how the colonization of Freetown and her surroundings shaped what we now know as Sierra Leone. The legendary Bai Burreh's epic hut tax war against the British and the brave Sengbe Pieh's rebellion aboard the Spanish ship La Amistad Krio is a broken language from English, French, Portuguese, German (European cultural impacts), Mende, Limba, and Temne, among other African languages. Freed-melanated people returning from the United States, Canada, England, and the Caribbean islands developed the tongue. This book also includes the English translations of the Krio lyrics from the accompanying hip-hop album "Dark Horse from Romarong ...a City of Kings" by hip-hop recording artist Freddy Will. He recorded the music in the Krio language of Sierra Leone.

  • af Derk R. Mattocks

Derk Mattocks was raised during a time when the fight for social justice was at its peak in the United States. Instead of shying away, he learned to challenge the circumstances and not let them dictate how he would live his life. Of course, Derk would say while he does not consider himself a fighter, there was something innate that led him to the top of a career field that was inaccessible to people of color during that Jim Crow period, a period meant to marginalize African Americans by denying them the right to vote, hold jobs, get an education or other opportunities. This was by no means an easy task, considering the opposition he faced trying to bring some normalcy in such a chaotic and dangerous environment in which he lived.Reflecting on his childhood, Derk acknowledges that he would not be one-tenth of the man he is now if it were not for his schoolteachers and community role models. They were genuine, in their teaching, nurturing, caring, and preparing him for any path he chose to take. They taught him how and where to look, but left it up to him to assess and act on his findings. They taught him diligence. Derk firmly believes that for anyone to reach his or her greatest potential, he/she must first be opened to mentoring and insights that show them how to tackle and manage challenging situations. He attributes his ability to convert challenges into opportunities to his schooling and mentoring at Belgrade Elementary, Silverdale Elementary, and Georgetown High. His sincerest wish is to live his life with dignity and respect while gaining more wisdom in the process.

Focusing on the attitudes and experiences of American female diplomats and spouses, this book examines the social, political, and cultural dimensions of American interactions with the Middle East and North Africa in the five decades after the Second World War. A turbulent period, marked by conflicts associated with the Cold War and decolonization, it was also characterized by changing attitudes to women at odds with those in Moslem societies. The impact of those changes is explored throughout this book, principally drawing on personal oral histories included in the 'Frontline Diplomacy' collection, but reinforced by cables passing between regional U.S. embassies and the State Department in Washington DC.

This collection focuses on the role of religious leaders and religious institutions in supporting or resisting the democratization process in Zimbabwe. It scrutinizes the actions of religious leaders such Andrew Wutawunashe and Jeremiah Mutendi who were prominent in the political scene and participated as enablers of the undemocratic regime. The contributors to this volume employ a variety of methodological approaches to understand the operational dilemma of the second republic under Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, commonly referred to as Zanupfism. It is an empirical study to determine the impact of religious leaders as regime enablers and assess the effects of such an approach in terms of social development, democracy, and social transformation as espoused in the rise of the second republic. In order to balance the narrative, the book highlights and offers critique of religious leaders and institutes who are the resistors of the regime. It specifically explores the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference, Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Talent Chiwenga and Shingi Munyeza. This is a critical study of decoloniality in a religious context that documents characters such as Shingi Mayeza, Bishop Mutendi, Mapostori who seldomly appear in scholarship despite their great impact (either positive or negative) on the lives of the people of Zimbabwe.

Kenya has a rich and complex history. Due to the vast discoveries of prehistoric archaeological remains, Kenya is one of the few places in the world with the largest and most complete record of human's cultural development. Furthermore, the country's strategic location astride the Indian Ocean and the East African littoral attracted numerous foreigners such as the Arabs, Persians, Portuguese, Americans, British, Chinese, French, and Germans. Additionally, immigrants from throughout Africa and beyond have settled in Kenya to escape conflict or political persecution, while others wanted an opportunity to begin a new life. As a result of being a gateway to the world, the country traditionally has been one of the most important business, cultural, diplomatic, and political centers in Africa. Still, Kenya, like many other countries throughout the world, has been plagued by an increasing array of complex economic, political, and social challenges.Historical Dictionary of Kenya, Fourth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country's politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Kenya.

¿This book explores the role of caravan transport and human porterage in the colony of German East Africa (present-day mainland Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi). With caravan mobility being of pivotal importance to colonial rule during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the exploration of vernacular transport and its governance during this period sheds new light on the trajectories of colonial statehood. The author addresses key questions such as the African resilience to colonial interventions, the issue of labor recruitment, and the volatility of colonial infrastructure. This book unveils a fundamental contradiction in the way that German administrators dealt with precolonial modes of transport in East Africa. While colonizers championed for the abolishment of caravan transport, they strongly depended on porters in the absence of pack animals or railways. To bring this contradiction to the fore, the author studies the shifting role of caravans in East Africa during the era of ¿high imperialism.¿ Uncovering the extent to which porters and caravan entrepreneurs challenged and shaped colonial policymaking, this book provides an insightful read for historians studying German Empire and African history, as well as those interested in the history of transport and infrastructure.
