A breakaway bestseller since its first printing, "All Souls" takes readers deep into MacDonalds Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. MacDonald tells his family story here with gritty but moving honesty.
Microhistory is a technique that has been used effectively by writers of both fiction and nonfiction. It enables the author to cut through the complexities of large swaths of history by focusing on a particular time and place. Microhistories are particularly useful in historical study when a subfield has recently arisen and there are not yet enough monographic studies from which to draw general patterns. This microhistory focuses on a single year (1920) across the United States, with the goal of understanding the various roles of information in this society. It gives greater emphasis to the informational aspects of traditional historical topics such as farming, government bureaucracy, the Spanish flu pandemic, and Prohibition; and it gives greater attention to information-rich topics such as libraries and museums, schools and colleges, the financial services and office machinery industries, scientific research institutions, and management consultancies.
In the face of AMLO’s bulged figure as president of Mexico, few publications address his administration objectively. Isabella Cota manages to do so regarding economy. Her research reports on the unexpected ideological and financial contradictions of the Forth Transformation, the lights and shadows of an administration that will definitely be judged by history. Luck or Disaster is an intelligent analysis—backed by hard data—that unravels the financial consequences for better or worse of the so-called Republican austerity, the unconditional support to Pemex and the CFE, using the army as an economy agent, the botched fight against corruption, canceling the NAIM project, the lack of support during the pandemic, the channeling of resources to just a few massive projects, and the president’s apparent good luck, among other subjects.
Tales of The Old-Timers - A History of Lexington records small portions of life in Lexington, Ohio, over the last two centuries. The interesting words of early writers are used just as they put them to paper. The stories are based simply on facts dug up by the author and written down with only his own understanding of times past and the perspective of old-timers used as a guide. In some cases, information supplied from fading memories may have been embellished or remembered incorrectly by the old-timers, but it provides a rich tapestry of local Lexington history
FINALIST FOR THE 2023 MAVIS GALLANT PRIZE FOR NON-FICTIONA riveting account of the years, months and days leading up to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and the unexpected ways Canadians were involved in every aspect of the American Civil War.Canadians have long taken pride in being on the “good side” of the American Civil War, serving as a haven for 30,000 escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. But dwelling in history's shadow is the much darker role Canada played in supporting the slave South and in fomenting the many plots against Lincoln. The North Star weaves together the different strands of several Canadians and a handful of Confederate agents in Canada as they all made their separate, fateful journeys into history. The book shines a spotlight on the stories of such intrepid figures as Anderson Abbott, Canada’s first Black doctor, who joined the Union Army; Emma Edmonds, the New Brunswick woman who disguised herself as a man to enlist as a Union nurse; and Edward P. Doherty, the Quebec man who led the hunt to track down Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth. At the same time, the Canadian political and business elite were aiding the slave states. Toronto aristocrat George Taylor Denison III bankrolled Confederate operations and opened his mansion to their agents. The Catholic Church helped one of Booth’s accused accomplices hide out for months in the Quebec countryside. A leading financier in Montreal let Confederates launder money through his bank. Sher creates vivid portraits of places we thought we knew. Montreal was a sort of nineteenth-century Casablanca of the North: a hub for assassins, money-men, mercenaries and soldiers on the run. Toronto was a headquarters for Confederate plotters and gun-runners. The two largest hotels in the country became nests of Confederate spies. Meticulously researched and richly illustrated, The North Star is a sweeping tale that makes long-ago events leap off the page with a relevance to the present day.

" 'Affrilachia,' a term first coined in 1991 by Kentucky poet Frank X Walker, refers to the cultural contributions of African Americans who live in Appalachia, a largely mountainous region stretching over thirteen states from Mississippi to New York. Although Black Americans have greatly influenced the popular culture landscape in this region, their stories, trials, and triumphs are often undocumented because Appalachia is perceived as wholly white. In this stunning visual history, photographer and curator Chris Aluka Berry gives voice to the broad spectrum of African Americans who have lived in the Appalachian region over the centuries. Berry, who spent six years in western North Carolina, northeast Georgia, and eastern Tennessee, immersed himself in the communities and lives of Black Appalachians to present the diversity and commonalities of the proud people in the region. His intimate and revealing photographs capture Arican Americans in various settings--churches, homes, revival services, family gatherings, and homegoing celebrations. Completing this comprehensive collection are powerful narratives from the people who inhabit these places, and contributions from Appalachian writers Kelly Elaine Navies and Maia A. Surdam, whose poignant and powerful poems and essays offer historical perspective and broaden the book's archival importance. The first book of its kind, Affrilachia: Testimonies is an inspired historical artifact that honors, represents, and celebrates the proud people of color whose history and existence has greatly contributed to the broad tapestry of Appalachia"

In 1903, John arrived in Seattle Washington and soon established his own men's clothing business. By 1913, he began to manage a nickelodeon theatre next to his store, primarily to attract customers to his clothing business. To his surprise, the theatre proved to be more profitable. Consequently, John decided to focus on expanding his chain of theatres. He named his business, the Sterling Theatre Company. Despite facing challenges such as two world wars, bankruptcies, the longest labor strike in Seattle's history, and the Great Depression, John Danz managed to achieve significant success. He passed away in 1961, leaving his theatre empire to his son, Fred.At the age of fifty-five, author Mark Hester's journey of discovery began. However, the test results unveiled something unexpected - Mark Hester was twenty-five percent Jewish. This revelation left him puzzled. After spending forty years researching his family history, he had no indication of Jewish ancestry. What happened next would have a profound and lasting impact on his life.

I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself and how I acquired these letters. My name is Steve Lawler and I am an avid history buff, antique picker and have been researching Civil War for 30 years. Myself and Neal (Mac) McBrayer were doing maintenance on our 12 lb Napoleon Cannon at Kelly Ranch near Alpine, AL. some 5 or 6 years ago. There was this trailer there and of course it caught my eye. I looked inside and it was full of boxes and books. I got to looking through the boxes and I found items from as far back as WW1. To make a long story short I was able to purchase the contents from Charles Kelly. As myself and Mac were going through the boxes and trunks, I came across these letters. I couldn't put them down. They were from Captain Kelly to his wife Amie. Nearly all the letters started with My Dear Amie hence the title of the letters. I couldn't bring myself to keep the letters. I gave them back to Charles and asked if I could take them with me and transcribe them. He agreed and a year and a half later I finally got done transcribing them. They are full of tragedies of war, humorous accounts and what Amie needed to do in keeping the farm up and running. If you are history buffs or needing to read the true account of the Civil War you will hear it from someone who lived through it day by day.

"In 1925, hundreds of people descended on the sleepy town of Dayton, Tennessee, where a young schoolteacher named John T. Scopes was put on trial for including a reference to evolution in his teaching. Darwin's concept that species evolved over time through natural selection was misunderstood as challenging the Bible, faith in God, and as suggesting that men were descended from monkeys. Two legendary men, Clarence Darrow for the defense, and William Jennings Bryan for the prosecution, drew massive crowds in a trial that quickly became a circus-like media sensation. Darrow argued for individual freedom including in religion and education, and Bryan argued from a fundamentalist Christian perspective that evolution undermined faith in God and the literal truth of the Bible. Acclaimed historian Brenda Wineapple brings to vivid life the entirety of this dramatic and colorful period that exposed foundation divisions in America across race, class, and religion. Bryan had run several times, unsuccessfully, for President, and his political efforts and ambitions, vividly chronicled in this book, culminated in Dayton. Darrow was a leader of the ACLU and known as a fervent defender of laborers, and his long history of legal defense in matters of individual rights also reached its apogee in this trial of the century. In his defense of Scopes and the First Amendment protection of individual liberty, Darrow said: 'No subject possesses the minds of men like religious bigotry, and hate, and these fires are being lighted today in America.'"--
