"By way of H.G. Wells and Rebecca West's affair through 1930s nuclear physics to Flanagan's father working as a slave labourer near Hiroshima when the atom bomb is dropped, this daisy chain of events reaches fission when Flanagan as a young man finds himself trapped in a rapid on a wild river not knowing if he is to live or to die. At once a love song to his island home and to his parents, this hypnotic melding of dream, history, place, and memory is about how our lives so often arise out of the stories of others and the stories we invent about ourselves"--

Did you know there was a piano on the First Fleet? That the first convict artist was hanged for his trouble? That the first female author here started writing under a man's name? That the King owns the painting of our Federation? And did you know that there was a convict who wrote a dictionary of Australian slang? A man who was transported to Australia a record three times? And what about the world's first full-length feature film? Made in Australia, way back in 1906! These are just some of the many fascinating stories in Imagining Australia: a history of our nation through music, film, literature & art. The history of Australia is incredibly interesting. Often hilarious, sometimes infuriating. Especially when it is told by its artists. Writers, painters, musicians, filmmakers: they hold up a mirror and tell us who we are. They have done that from the start of white occupation. And, of course, long before. Imagining Australia tells a story of our nation through the eyes of people who are trained to see. Artists look at the world around them much more carefully than most of us. And what they see both describes and shapes our nation. In more than 80 well-researched and highly engaging chapters, Imagining Australia looks at our history by discussing movies, paintings, photographs, songs, and books. It puts them in the context of the times they were made, and asks what they say about who we were and who we have become. History and the arts are two sides of the same coin. Each is reflected in the other. Imagining Australia takes you on an extraordinary journey of discovery.

Knocking The Top Off: A People's History of Alcohol in Australia explores the changing nature of drinking in Australia and the role it has played in social and economic life over several generations. From the early days of colonisation through to the contemporary moment this heavily illustrated collection chronicles the ways in which alcohol consumption has impacted on, and been shaped by, changing patterns and notions of class, sexuality, gender, race, and culture. Stripping back dated stereotypes and defying received ideas, more than 20 contributors provide histories, essays and memoirs offering insights into the role of alcohol in creating, and at times derailing, contestation and change. Via short expositions and deep dives into incidents, periods, groups and individuals Knocking The Top Off looks at developments in Australian history from the vantage point of workers and marginalised communities, the exploited and oppressed. Alcohol's often contradictory place as a method of recreation, a means of social control, a symbol of equality and liberation, and a sharp point of debate concerning morality, commerce and health is explored. Similarly, the role of pubs, clubs and other alcohol based venues in fostering trends in music, art, and politics is uncovered, as well as their role as places in which exploitation and discrimination has been both reinforced and challenged. In exploring the who, what, where and why of intoxication this collection delivers an inclusive and incisive alternative history of Australia.

"Ellen Anderson's Aboriginal Dreaming stories, as recorded by C.W. Peck in the 1920s and 1930s, evidence the rich oral tradition of the Indigenous people of eastern Australia. Dealing with plants and animals, the physical environment, cultural practices and historic events, they open a window into a civilisation distinguished by its close association with Country."Michael Organ introduces us to an original storyteller from the NSW Illawarra district.

Winner of the 2014 Indie Award for Non - Fiction. Girt. No word could better capture the essence of Australia... In this hilarious history, David Hunt tells the real story of Australia's past from megafauna to Macquarie ... the cock - ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are. Mark Twain wrote of Australian history: 'It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies ... but they are all true, they all happened.' In Girt, Hunt uncovers these beautiful lies, recounting the strange and ridiculous episodes that conventional histories ignore. The result is surprising, enlightening - and side - splittingly funny. Girt explains the role of the coconut in Australia's only military coup, the Dutch obsession with nailing perfectly good kitchenware to posts, and the settlers' fear of Pemulwuy and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamingcoat. It introduces us to forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the typically Irish crime of 'felony of sock'; Patyegarang, the young Eora girl who co - authored the world's most surprising dictionary; and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia. Our nation's beginnings were steeped in the unlikely, the incongruous and the frankly bizarre. Girt restores these stories to their rightful place. Not to read it would be un - Australian.

From the contents (altogether 11 contributions):Andreas Flurschütz da CruzDagmar Freist & Lucas Haasis, Die Prize Papers. A saga of exceptional valor in World War II by Australian volunteers in the Royal Navy. Their service was diverse and dangerous, in the Battle of the Atlantic; the Arctic convoys to Murmansk in Russia; mine-clearance, covert sorties, Combined Operations in the Mediterranean and Normandy, and SE Asia. Recruited under the Dominion Yachtsmen Scheme, the Yachties war service in the Northern Hemisphere was as diverse as it was dangerous.

Australia and World Crisis, 1914-1923 is the second volume in a pioneering two-volume history of Australian defence and foreign policy. It is based on wide-ranging research in collections of personal and official papers in Australia, Britain, the United States and Canada. Linking up with the first volume, The Search for Security in the Pacific, it offers a new and path-breaking understanding of Australia's relations with the world from the outbreak of the First World War to the making of peace in Europe and the Pacific. This study explores a number of fundamental issues that shaped Australia's response to the world in this era, such as race and culture, geopolitics and security, domestic divisions and ideas of loyalty, and the philosophies and personalities of the chief policy makers. From the outset of this global conflict Australia was involved in a 'hot war' in Europe against Germany and its allies, and in a 'cold war' in the Pacific against Japan. The British Australians, for reasons of sentiment and interest, supported the Mother Country, but even as they did so they were deeply concerned about Japan's ambitions. As a result Japan figured prominently in Australia's approach to the war and the peace. Indeed for the Australians the 'cold war' did not come to an end until the Washington Conference of 1921-2, when Japan with the other Pacific powers agreed to limit naval building and to respect existing territories in China and the Pacific. In tracing out this story, the book throws light on many particular aspects of the 'hot' and 'cold' wars. They include the origins of Asian studies in Australia, intelligence gathering, the secret service and loyalty leagues, the fear of Japan in the conscription controversy, Irish Catholics and the Anglo-Irish War. The labour movement and the Bolshevik revolution, the ideological clash of the American President and the Australian Prime Minister over peacemaking, the visit of the Prince of Wales, 'Britishness' and the failure of the idea of Greater Britain all influenced the development of Australia's defence and foreign policy. At the end of the book there is an attempt to provide an assessment of Australia's leadership through these testing times and to point out the significance of this experience for a later generation of Australia policy makers.
