With her trademark engaging style, at once accessible and provocative, Cynthia Enloe draws on first-hand experiences of war in countries as diverse as Ukraine, Syria and Northern Ireland to show how women's wars are not men's wars, and why feminist campaigners remain active - against all odds - in the midst of armed violence.

Over the last fifty years or more, countless books have been written about the Vietnam War. The vast majority are about the daily experiences of the combat soldiers, marines and fighter pilots; strategies of the hard fought battles; heroes of the war who gave their lives to save others; etc, etc. But John Liberto has a different prospective of the war. It's been estimated that for every solider fighting the enemy there are forty to fifty military personnel backing him up; pilots, medics ( doctors and nurses ), office personnel, truck drivers, equipment mechanics, supply clerks, cooks; the list goes on and on. As a nineteen year old Army helicopter mechanic in a war zone he saw the war from a different prospective. He doesn't have a continuous war story to tell but this book contains seventeen different short stories about some of his experiences in the Army, most of them from his year in Vietnam.

On 24 May 1966, eight hundred men of the 5th Battalion landed at Nui Dat in Viet Cong territory. For the next 12 months they were faced with the task of restoring peace, civil law and regular commerce to the Vietnamese of Phuoc Tuy Province. This book is a detailed record of those months in the monsoon jungles--of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were found. Captain O'Neill's position as Battalion Intelligence Officer enabled him to view the war from the standpoint of the Battalion as a whole. However, he does not omit description of personal feelings--towards the Viet Cong, the jungle environment, the Vietnamese people and the other allied forces involved in the war. Most of the book was written on the spot in Vietnam. On operations or at Battalion Headquarters, Captain O'Neill jotted down details of the war against the Viet Cong; putting the events of each day in order, often in the small hours of the following morning. Thus not only is this a factual account of the 5th Battalion's activities over the year, it is also a vivid and compelling picture of the war in Vietnam from the soldier's point of view.--Publisher's website.

Behind the scenes of America's first TV war."With the proliferation of televisions, news networks strived to have the most exciting, dramatic, and attractive stories. They competed for the finest reporters, highest-rated equipment, and largest number of viewers. ... For the first time in American history, the news from the front lines was brought straight into the living room." - Jessie Kratz, Historian of the National ArchivesAs American families sat down for dinner in front of their TV sets 50 years ago, horrific stories from Vietnam flashed across the screen. It was one of the country's bloodiest conflicts and we had a front-row seat 10,000 miles awayVietnam has been the subject of hundreds of books, movies and commentaries for decades. But we know little about how these stories were gathered and told, nor about the men and women who risked everything to tell them. Our gaze back then was on the fighting at a time when the war everyone hated and feared reached a climax."Tales from Monkey Mountain: Stories of the Vietnam War" is a different account of Vietnam. It is a war seen through the eyes of a young Navy press escort officer stationed in DaNang, not far from the Demilitarized Zone separating the Vietnamese north and south.Mike Hoyt became immersed in almost every aspect of the war and in the telling of its stories. A trained journalist, Hoyt takes us into the heart of the conflict for a rare look behind the scenes at how the news media went about covering the fighting."Tales from Monkey Mountain" takes us on a journey through the strange, uncharted waters of news gathering in combat. We follow Hoyt down dangerous rivers, into smoky bars, through enemy attacks, onto the flight decks of aircraft carriers, on Swift Boats and river patrols, lumbering Navy supply boats dodging mines and into furious Naval gunfire support missions on the South China Sea.We glimpse the inner world of Vietnam and its remote, ancient villages and hamlets w

Colonel John Boyd, a maverick fighter pilot, revolutionized the American art of war but his research relied on accounts written by Wehrmacht veterans who fabricated historical evidence to cover up their participation in Nazi war crimes. The Blind Strategist separates fact from fantasy and exposes the myths of maneuver warfare through a detailed evidence-based investigation and is a must-read for anybody interested in American military history.

"Six months after 9/11, U.S. troops were on the ground in Afghanistan; less than a year later, America invaded Iraq. Brotherhood follows players on West Point's fiercely passionate rugby team as they became members of the first class to graduate in wartime since the days of Vietnam. Longtime journalist and Guardian editor Martin Pengelly's moving story covers a remarkable decades-long arc from 9/11 to present day. The narrative is guided by team captain, Matt Blind, as well as Bryan Phillips, an enormous football lineman who found a new life in the heart of the rugby scrum, and coach Mike Mahan, a legend of Army sports. Brotherhood offers intimate portraits of young men who go to war and what it meant to them to be bonded first by their time on the sports field. Of the rugby-playing teammates in West Point's class of 2002 who went to war, some came home and others didn't. Capt. Jimmy Gurbisz, one of the team's forwards, came from blue-collar New Jersey, achieved his dream by entering West Point, discovered a new sport there, fell in love with it, excelled, but suffered an injury which led directly to his tragic death in a blast of flame and steel on a dusty Baghdad street. Team players Zac Miller and Joey Emigh died away from war, but no less tragically. This book captures banding together on the rugby field with the same men whose lives they'll have to fiercely protect on the battlefield. Given extraordinary access, Pengelly has created a singular blend of brutal sports and even more brutal war that reads like Friday Nights Lights meets Band of Brothers"--

"Kissinger's Betrayal is arguably the most important single source published in decades for understanding why America went to war in Vietnam, why doing so was important, and what went wrong and ultimately led to a Communist victory."--Prof. Robert F. Turner, SJD, former president of the U.S. Institute of Peace, author of Vietnamese Communism: Its Origins and Development, and co-founder of the Center for National Security Law at the University of Virginia What really happened in Vietnam? For five decades, conventional wisdom about the Vietnam War has been that it was lost because it never could have been won. South Vietnam was doomed to defeat. The American effort was a foreign intrusion forever incapable of winning the "hearts and minds" of the South Vietnamese people. But what if South Vietnam was defeated not because of its own shortcomings but because it was betrayed by a secret deal made behind its back? Deeply researched and compellingly argued, Kissinger's Betrayal uses once-secret files of the American ambassador to South Vietnam and long-overlooked documents from official government archives--including the foreign ministry of the Soviet Union--to reveal for the first time how Henry Kissinger personally and secretly schemed to irrevocably compromise South Vietnam's chances for survival. Without informing his president, other American leaders, or US allies in South Vietnam, Kissinger unilaterally made a horrendous--and ultimately completely unnecessary--diplomatic concession that allowed Communist North Vietnam to leave its army inside South Vietnam and then freely resume its war of invasion and conquest at a time of its own choosing. In an unprecedented account, historian and global executive director of the Caux Round Table for Moral Capitalism Stephen B. Young provides new insight into both genuine Vietnamese Nationalism and the French colonialism that marginalized and decentered the right of the Vietnamese people to live freely in an independent country of their own choosing. Kissinger's Betrayal reveals a fresh and more truthful history of the Vietnam War that restores dignity to America as well as the people of Vietnam.

In this fully illustrated introduction, acclaimed historian Dr Aaron Edwards provides a concise overview of one of the most difficult and controversial actions in recent history.Spanning 38 years of the 'Troubles', the British Army's deployment in Northern Ireland (codenamed Operation Banner) was one of the most difficult and controversial in its recent history. Over 10,000 troops were on active service during much of the campaign, which saw armoured vehicles, helicopters and special forces deployed onto the streets of Ulster. In this book, Dr Aaron Edwards considers the strategic, operational and tactical aspects of Operation Banner, as the Army's military objectives morphed from high-profile peacekeeping into a covert war against the IRA. Using personal testimony from both sides of the sectarian divide, as well as insights from the soldiers themselves, he presents an authoritative introduction to the Army's role in the Troubles, providing expert analysis of Operation Banner's successes and failures.Updated and revised for the new edition, with full-colour maps and 50 new images, this is an accessible introduction to the complicated yet fascinating history of modern Britain's longest military campaign.

A spectacularly illustrated new history and analysis of the strategic bombing campaign in the Korean War, which saw the last combat of America's legendary B-29s. Just five years after they defeated Japan, at the dawn of the jet age, the most advanced bomber of World War II was already obsolescent. But the legendary war-winning Superfortresses had one more war to fight, in the strategic air campaign against North Korea. The bombers' task was to destroy North Korea's facilities for waging war, from industry and hydroelectric dams to airfields and bridges. However, it was a challenging campaign, in which the strategy was not merely military but political. In this fascinating book, airpower scholar and former RAF pilot Michael Napier explains how the campaign was fought, and how the technique of 'bombing to negotiate' that would become notorious in Vietnam was already being used in Korea. He analyses in detail the relationship between battlefield progress, armistice negotiations and the bombing strategy developed over the complex campaign. In the skies over Korea, the B-29s operated in a new world dominated by jet fighters and jet age technology, and tactics were developing rapidly. Packed with original illustrations, this book includes dramatic air scenes featuring B-29s, MiG-15s, AD Skyraiders and Skyknight jet nightfighters in action. It also includes maps, 3D recreations of missions and explanatory 3D diagrams to bring the conflict to life. This is a fascinating, dramatic account of the last battles of the piston-engined aircraft era as the superpowers vied for victory in the first clash of the Cold War.

  • af Mark Galeotti
    155,95 kr.

An authoritative analysis of how Putin's Russia conquered the Crimea in 2014 using 'grey zone' warfare techniques, blending operations by anonymous special forces with cyber, sabotage, and propaganda. Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 was almost bloodless - fought as much through propaganda, cyberattacks and subversion as by force of arms - but it is crucial for our understanding of both modern warfare and recent Russian history. Ironically, this slick triumph eventually led to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the largest and costliest conventional war in Europe since 1945. This is a fascinating account of the Crimea conquest from a supremely qualified expert on modern Russian forces. Illustrated throughout, it explores how Russia developed its new model of 'hybrid' or 'grey zone' warfare, and planned and deployed it against Crimea, from the choreographed appearance of 'spontaneous' protesters through to the deployment of unbadged Russian elite forces. In this book Mark Galeotti explores the lessons that Russia, Ukraine, and the West took from it - correctly and mistakenly - and how this apparently textbook operation sowed the seeds that would erupt so catastrophically in 2022.
