This book, Thales and the Beginnings of European Reflection, is more than a field guide to all major testimonies about Thales. It does not merely contain a summary and critique of the available literature on the subject, but also lays down a new, holistic interpretation of Thales from a perspective that brings to light several important, but previously overlooked issues. An emphasis on mythology in Thales¿ thought combined with discourse analysis and a comprehensive treatment of his thinking in its pre-philosophical and pre-scientific unity is hoped to offer a unique and deeper insight into Thales¿ genius and the beginnings of European reflection.

This book is an elucidation and defense of four main propositions: (1) human nature is essentially rational; (2) rational nature is a conversation; (3) as the essential fabric of human nature, the reason exists as a potentiality in the formal organization of the human body; and (4) at the individual and collective levels, humanity grows and develops in the medium of conversation. Moreover, human nature is the unity of the capacities of intellect, which aims at the value of truth, goodness, which aims at the value of human love or happiness, and will, which aims at the value of freedom. Accordingly, in any type of human dialogue, or conversation, the dialogist should act as a human being and treats the other dialogist as a human being. This assumption underlies the analysis of the basic types of individual and inter-institutional dialogue.

Trotz vielfältiger Ablenkungen ist die Mathematik in den knapp 300 Stücken der Korrespondenzen dieses Bandes wieder ein dominantes Thema. Mehrere Auseinandersetzungen begleitet Leibniz beratend: zwischen P. Varignon und M. Rolle um Grundlagen und Korrektheit des Differentialkalküls sowie zwischen Joh. Bernoulli und G. Cheyne um dessen Lehrbuch zum newtonschen Fluxionskalkül. Mit gemischtem Erfolg versucht Leibniz seine Briefpartner für die Binärrechnung zu begeistern. In J. Hermann und Chr. Wolff gewinnt er neue, langjährige Korrespondenzpartner. Wissenschaftspolitisch macht Leibniz seinen Einfluss bei der Besetzung des Galilei-Lehrstuhls in Padua und Bestrebungen, in Dresden eine Sozietät der Wissenschaften zu gründen, geltend. Nach dem Ende der Kontroverse über die Dynamik wendet sich Leibniz' Korrespondenz mit D. Papin technischen Fragestellungen zu. Im Zentrum des umfangreichen Briefwechsels mit R. Chr. Wagner stehen die von diesem beaufsichtigten Arbeiten an Leibniz' Rechenmaschine. Auch nach der protestantischen Kalenderreform von 1700 bildet die Kalenderrechnung in der Korrespondenz mit Astronomen sowie mit Mitgliedern der päpstlichen Kalenderkongregation ein wichtiges Thema des Bandes.

Die Begriffe «Vorstellung, Denken, Sprache» umreißen durchgehende Themen der Philosophie Karl Leonhard Reinholds. Steht «Vorstellung» zentral für Reinholds kantische Phase der Elementarphilosophie der 1790er-Jahre, so erweisen sich «Denken» und «Sprache» als Schlüsselbegriffe seines nach 1800 einsetzenden Philosophierens im Geiste eines sich als neue Konzeption von Logik, später auch Projekt der Synonymik verstehenden und gezielt mit dem damaligen transzendentalen und spekulativen Idealismus konkurrierenden rationalen Realismus.
