This book is an analysis and discussion of the soul as a psychophysical process and its role in mental representation, meaning, understanding and agency. Grant Gillett and Walter Glannon combine contemporary neuroscience and philosophy to address fundamental issues about human existence and living and acting in the world. Based in part on Aristotle's hylomorphism and model of the psyche, their approach is informed by a neuroscientific model of the brain as a dynamic organ in which patterns of neural oscillation and synchronization are shaped by biological, social and cultural factors inside and outside of it. The authors provide a richer and more robust account of the soul, or mind, than other accounts by framing it in neuroscientific and philosophical terms that do not explain it away but explain it as something that is shaped by how it responds to the natural and social environment in enabling flexible and adaptive behavior.
(Lars Muhl)
The Official Mardukite Systemology "Biofeedback Manual" is now available to the public for the very first time.
Through a philosophical lens, this book explores the powerful educational capabilities of classic psychedelics.
In this book, Michael Madary examines visual experience, drawing on both phenomenological and empirical methods of investigation. He finds that these two approaches -- careful, philosophical description of experience and the science of vision -- independently converge on the same result: Visual perception is an ongoing process of anticipation and fulfillment. Madary first makes the case for the descriptive premise, arguing that the phenomenology of vision is best described as on ongoing process of anticipation and fulfillment. He discusses visual experience as being perspectival, temporal, and indeterminate; considers the possibility of surprise when appearances do not change as we expect; and considers the content of visual anticipation. Madary then makes the case for the empirical premise, showing that there are strong empirical reasons to model vision using the general form of anticipation and fulfillment. He presents a range of evidence from perceptual psychology and neuroscience, and reinterprets evidence for the two-visual-systems hypothesis. Finally, he considers the relationship between visual perception and social cognition. An appendix discusses Husserlian phenomenology as it relates to the argument of the book.Madary argues that the fact that there is a convergence of historically distinct methodologies itself is an argument that supports his findings. With Visual Phenomenology, he creates an exchange between the humanities and the sciences that takes both methods of investigation seriously.
Based on Psalm 119’s twenty-two prayers, beautifully paraphrased and interpretated a new by Naleea Landmann, this little gem of a book is a most exquisite tool of meditation and healing. The perfect gift for anyone looking for a simple practice and a daily companion. “A most profound book that will open hearts and activate God Consciousness within.” Lars Muhl

In recent years, there has been tremendous progress in scientific and technological sectors. This has resulted in a significant rise in the standard of living. However, these advances are not strongly correlated with human happiness. The standard of life has yet to take an upward direction. As the basic gap between the standard of living and standard of life seems to spring from the problems of human relationships. However, human relationship has been complicated owing to an inadequate understanding of individuals own behaviours as well as behaivours of others. Fortunately, psychologists, neurophysiologists and behaviour scientists have carried out extensive research to explore the frontiers of the human mind and behaviour. Yet a schism exists between scientific knowledge and peoples acquisition. The present book is an attempt to bring together some essential facts regarding human mind and present them in a style commensurate with people's needs. As a teacher and researcher, I have been prompted to take the academic stuffs out of the classroom and discussion forums and make them an essential part of our healthy living. Of course, it is not possible to achieve this objective within the scope of a single book. I have tried to focus on some representative areas of science. Hopefully the interest of readers will stimulate me further for projects of similar nature.
This book demonstrates how a radical version of physicalism (`No-Self Physicalism¿) can offer an internally coherent and comprehensive philosophical worldview. It first argues that a coherent physicalist should explicitly treat a cognitive subject merely as a physical thing and should not vaguely assume an amorphous or even soul-like subject or self. This approach forces the physicalist to re-examine traditional core philosophical notions such as truth, analyticity, modality, apriority because our traditional understandings of them appear to be predicated on a cognitive subject that is not literally just a physical thing. In turn, working on the assumption that a cognitive subject is itself completely physical, namely a neural network-based robot programmed by evolution (hence the term `No-Self¿), the book proposes physicalistic theories on conceptual representation, truth, analyticity, modality, the nature of mathematics, epistemic justification, knowledge, apriority and intuition, as well as a physicalistic ontology. These are meant to show that this No-Self Physicalism, perhaps the most minimalistic and radical version of physicalism proposed to date, can accommodate many aspects that have traditionally interested philosophers. Given its refreshingly radical approach and painstakingly developed content, the book is of interest to anyone who is seeking a coherent philosophical worldview in this age of science.
Did you know you are a mindreader? Most of us have a fundamental curiosity aboutpeople and are in fact engaging in the process of mindreading every day, as wenavigate our social worlds. For instance, we often think about what other people arethinking. On a more basic level, we even predict others' goals based on their actions, such as when they reach for and grasp objects in their environment. This thesisaimed to test and validate a classic action observation paradigm. In order to do so,three experiments were conducted to investigate action observation for goal-directedmovements. In Experiment 1, adults' eye gaze was tracked as they viewed reach-tograspmovements. Contrary to standard predictions, results did not replicate gazeproactivity according to a motor matching account. Rather, adults' eyes latched on totargets that were larger and/or nearer to the agent's hand. A motor matching accountwould have predicted that grasp type (pincer grasp or whole-hand prehension)should cue gaze proactivity to the congruent target (i.e., small object or large object, respectively). In Experiment 2, adults' reaction times were measured as they viewedthe same stimuli, but presented in static rather than dynamic format. Similarly toExperiment 1, adults' response times were faster to detect a target when it appearedover an object closer to the reaching hand, rather than an object farther away fromthe hand. Again, this was not in line with a motor matching account. Finally, inExperiment 3, adults' explicit probability judgements were solicited for still framestaken from the original video stimuli. Yet again, a distance effect prevailed, wherebyadults explicitly predicted that the agent's hand would contact the closer of twoobjects, even when the hand was at rest (in the absence of any motor cue). Overall, these results imply that adults are applying non-motor heuristics during actionobservation. As such, the stimuli tested in these classical studies may not be fit forpurpose, that is, they do not reliably show a motor matching effect during actionobservation in adults. The implications of these findings for future research andtheorising are also discussed.

In this book, J.S. Haldane challenges the mechanistic theory of life and mind that was prevalent in the early 20th century. He argues that life cannot be reduced to a series of chemical reactions, and that there is more to human consciousness than can be explained by brain function. Haldane's insightful critique of mechanistic thinking remains relevant today. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. This book explores the cognitive plausibility of computational language models and why it¿s an important factor in their development and evaluation. The authors present the idea that more can be learned about cognitive plausibility of computational language models by linking signals of cognitive processing load in humans to interpretability methods that allow for exploration of the hidden mechanisms of neural models. The book identifies limitations when applying the existing methodology for representational analyses to contextualized settings and critiques the current emphasis on form over more grounded approaches to modeling language. The authors discuss how novel techniques for transfer and curriculum learning could lead to cognitively more plausible generalization capabilities in models. The book also highlights the importance of instance-level evaluation and includes thorough discussion of the ethical considerations that may arise throughout the various stages of cognitive plausibility research.
