This volume is the first in a planned edition of the complete corpus of ancient Mesopotamian god lists. It contains the lists "An = Anum" (including its forerunners) and "An = Anu Sa ameli" along with several similar, more-or-less fragmentary lists. The god list An = Anum was, with its ca. 2000 entries, the most comprehensive list of its kind. It is systematically organized and contains explanations both of individual deities and of certain groups of deities. The textual witnesses also provide, to a varying degree, pronunciation and translation glosses. In this edition each list is presented as a composite reconstructed text with translation, critical apparatus, and synoptic table of the textual witnesses, followed in each case by a philological commentary. In addition, the textual witnesses are transliterated individually. Names, words, and glosses are made accessible through detailed indexes. Hand copies and photographs of previously unpublished sources conclude the volume.

Is the Hebrew Bible purely a product of Jerusalem or were there various social groups who each played a role in its development during the Second Temple period? This is the guiding question of the present volume, which fills a crucial gap in recent research by combining current literary-historical, redactional and text-historical analysis of the Hebrew Bible with the latest results pertaining to the pluriform social and religious shape of early Judaism. For the first time, the thirteen articles in this volume address the phenomenon of religious plurality by bringing together archaeological, (religious-) historical, and literary-critical approaches. The articles by internationally renowned scholars cover the panorama of currently known social groups of Yahwistic character and the impact of this phenomenon on the making of the Hebrew Bible - from the Persian period to the time of Qumran.

Private associations abounded in the ancient Greek world and beyond, and this volume provides the first large-scale study of the strategies of governance which they employed. Emphasis is placed on the values fostered by the regulations of associations, the complexities of the private-public divide (and that divide's impact on polis institutions) and the dynamics of regional and global networks and group identity. The attested links between rules and religious sanctions also illuminate the relationship between legal history and religion. Moreover, possible links between ancient associations and the early Christian churches will prove particularly valuable for scholars of the New Testament. The book concludes by using the regulations of associations to explore a novel and revealing aspect of the interaction between the Mediterranean world, India and China.

"Edith Hamilton (1867-1963), famed popularizer of the classics, whose books include Mythology and The Greek Way, introduced millions-literally millions-of general readers and young adults to the myths and culture of the Greco-Roman world. In the middle of the 20th century, she was arguably the most visible and widely read person on classics and mythology. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College and then a successful teacher and administrator at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Hamilton became well known to the public only when she was in her sixties. Her writings, written with a middle-American audience in mind, were intended to introduce general readers to a world of antiquity previously thought to be only the purview of those with knowledge of ancient languages. Her most successful book, Mythology, remains the most popular book of its kind and, like The Greek Way and The Roman Way, has never gone out of print. Houseman recounts Hamilton's life of ninety-five years, beginning with her childhood introduction to the study of Latin and Greek under her father's tutelage. Houseman explores the intellectual influences upon her, emphasizing in particular the nineteenth-century British thinkers whose work she encountered during her years as a student at Bryn Mawr, including Matthew Arnold and Edward Caird. It also tells the story of the two romantic relationships that shaped her life. The first was with Lucy Martin Donnelly, an English professor whose intellectual and aesthetic tastes made a profound impact upon Hamilton. The second, and more enduring, was with Doris Fielding Reid, with whom Hamilton lived for over forty years and with whom she raised a family composed of Reid's nephews and nieces. The biography also describes Hamilton's friendships with writers such as Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound, as well as with Senator Ralph E. Flanders, who led the movement in the Senate to censure Joseph McCarthy and inspired Hamilton's depiction of Demosthenes in her final book, The Echo of Greece. Houseman also situates Edith Hamilton's writing in relation to contemporary events such as the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, American involvement in the Second World War, the dropping of the atomic bombs, and American foreign policy during the Cold War, among others. She argues that Hamilton's writing and themes were often a response to these events. Even Mythology, intended as a modern version of Bulfinch's Mythology, was partly written during the fascist Italian invasion of Greece and makes many arguments for the special claims of Greece in Western history. Her work has influenced generations of readers as well, and was even said to have been a favorite of Robert Kennedy's, who drew on The Greek Way for inspiration in drafting speeches. The book is intended to be the definitive biography of a fascinating and daring woman who arguably helped to save the classics in America. This will be first biography of Hamilton apart from one written by her partner Doris Fielding which was a mix of memoir and biography. This will also be the first to draw on Hamilton's letters and other primary sources"--

A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year A thrilling study of the greatest of all epic poems, by one of the world's leading classicistsHomer's Iliad is the famous epic poem set among the tales of Troy. Its subject is the anger of the hero Achilles and its dreadful consequences for the warring Greeks and Trojans. It was composed more than 2,600 years ago, but still transfixes us with its tale of loss and battle, love and revenge, guided throughout by the active presence of the gods. Its beauty and profound bleakness are intensely moving but great questions remain: where, how and when it was composed and why it has such enduring power? In this compelling book Robin Lane Fox addresses these questions, drawing on a life-long love and engagement with the poem. He argues for a place, a date and a method for its composition, giving us a sense of alternative approaches and grounding his own in discoveries about long heroic poems composed elsewhere in the world, and the ever-growing evidence of archaeology. Unlike other books on the Iliad, this one combines the detailed expertise of a historian with the sensitivity of a teacher of it as poetry. Lane Fox goes on to consider hallmarks of the poem, its values, implicit and explicit, its characters, its women, its gods and even its horses. He argues repeatedly for its beautiful observation and addresses its parallel use of what is, to us, the natural world. Thousands of readers turn to the Iliad every year. In this superbly written and conceived tribute, Lane Fox expresses and amplifies what old and new readers can find in it. It is pervaded, he argues, by a poignant hardness which is not just a poetic trick. It is a deeply held view of the world.
