'A compelling narrative of the human story' TIM MARSHALL, author of Prisoners of Geography'Lively, rich and exciting... full of surprises' PETER FRANKOPAN, author of The Silk Roads_____________Sand, salt, iron, copper, oil and lithium. They built our world, and they will transform our future. These are the six most crucial substances in human history. They took us from the Dark Ages to the present day. They power our computers and phones, build our homes and offices, and create life-saving medicines. But most of us take them completely for granted. In Material World, Ed Conway travels the globe - from the sweltering depths of the deepest mine in Europe, to spotless silicon chip factories in Taiwan, to the eerie green pools where lithium originates - to uncover a secret world we rarely see. Revealing the true marvel of these substances, he follows the mind-boggling journeys, miraculous processes and little-known companies that turn the raw materials we all need into products of astonishing complexity. As we wrestle with climate change, energy crises and the threat of new global conflict, Conway shows why these substances matter more than ever before, and how the hidden battle to control them will shape our geopolitical future. This is the story of civilisation - our ambitions and glory, innovations and appetites - from a new perspective: literally from the ground up.
A celebrated international bestseller that exposes the ticking time-bomb underneath our new technological order. The resources race is on. Powering our digital lives and green technologies are some of the Earth's most precious metals - but they are running out. And what will happen when they do? The green-tech revolution will reduce our reliance on nuclear power, coal, and oil, but by breaking free of fossil fuels, we are setting ourselves up for a new dependence - on rare metals like cobalt, gold, and palladium. These are essential to electric vehicles, wind turbines, and solar panels, as well as our smartphones, computers, tablets, and other technologies. But we know very little about how rare metals are mined and traded, or their environmental, economic, and geopolitical costs - until now.
Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Geowissenschaften / Geographie - Geologie, Mineralogie, Bodenkunde, Note: 1.3, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Fachbereich Geologie und Materialwissenschaften), Veranstaltung: Scientific Training im Studiengang MSc TropHEE (Hydro-Geologie und Umweltwissenschaften), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: An introduction into the theory of heat transfer and Finite Element Modeling is presented. Then simulations for cylindrical configurations with the software Feflow where run to simulate heat transfer in soil. Reality was stepwise approximated by pure conduction, free conduction in saturated soil and finally free convection in unsaturated soil. Mualem and Van Genuchten empiric models where used. Results from Feflow where compared with older data from COMSOL simulations. Results where similar for conduction and for convection where the Brinkmann-equation provided for strong retardation of fluid flow within the solid matrix. An experiment under construction was also simulated. As soon as it delivers measurements observation pointsshould be added to the model to adapt model parameters to fit the measurements.
