When Paul Rosolie, a restless eighteen-year-old hungry for adventure, embarked on a journey to the western Amazon in 2006, he didn't know that it would transform his life. In the Madre de Dios ("Mother of God") region of Peru, where the Amazon River begins, the cloud forests of the Andes converge with the lowland Amazon rain forest to create the most biodiverse wilderness on the planet. In a true story of adventure and discovery that spans more than nine years, Rosolie takes us into the most inaccessible reaches of the Amazon. Along the way, he encounters massive snakes, isolated tribes, prowling jaguars, giant anteaters, and much more in the Wild West of the natural world. It is a journey into the last great wilderness that ultimately asks the question of our time: How much longer will these places exist? The primordial depths of the Madre de Dios are in grave danger.Mother of God is the story of an amazing odyssey into the heart of the wildest place on earth. But as Rosolie delves deeper into the heart of the jungle, he finds things he never imagined could exist. And as the legendary explorer Percy Fawcett warned, "The few remaining unknown places of the world exact a price for their secrets."

"The Expanding influence: What Rhinos Mean for Environments Downstream" dives into the mind boggling snare of natural interdependencies, zeroing in on the pivotal job rhinos play in molding downstream biological systems. This edifying investigation starts by disentangling the idea of the gradually expanding influence in biology, stressing the significant ramifications of figuring out the fragile equilibrium inside normal frameworks. Inside the pages of this convincing book, perusers leave on an excursion into the core of rhino living spaces, finding the cornerstone job these great animals satisfy in their biological systems. Inspecting their way of behaving, environment prerequisites, and connections with different species, the account discloses the unpredictable dance of life inside rhino-occupied scenes. As the parts unfurl, the book fastidiously delineates how rhinos go about as modelers of their current circumstance, impacting vegetation, adjusting soil piece, and chiseling water sources through their interesting brushing designs. The interconnectedness among rhinos and biodiversity arises, depicting them as umbrella species whose preservation emanates benefits across whole biological systems. A critical part of the story dives into the downstream impacts on water environments. Investigating how rhinos shape water quality, accessibility, and effect amphibian life, the book features the expansive outcomes of rhino presence or nonappearance. This segment gives a nuanced viewpoint on the mind boggling connections among earthly and sea-going conditions, offering experiences into the significance of all encompassing preservation procedures. Human-untamed life struggle becomes the dominant focal point, highlighting the difficulties of concurrence with rhinos. The book features preservation drives, uncovering both the victories and hardships of shielding these superb animals and their biological systems. The last sections project into the future, tending to arising dangers, the impact of environmental change, and supporting cooperative endeavors for economical protection. "The Far reaching influence" isn't simply a logical investigation; it is a source of inspiration. It winds around together the strings of environmental science, protection examples of overcoming adversity, and the earnest requirement for worldwide participation to save rhinos and the complex biological systems they call home. This book fills in as a signal, enlightening the way towards an agreeable concurrence among humankind and the wild, where the waves started by rhinos can thrive into floods of positive change.

This book features new work about the climate emergency, and brings together the best poems from four climate-themed books, Industrial Oz (Fomite, 2015), Hawk on Wire (Fomite, 2017) (July 2017 Editor's Pick at Newpages.com, and chosen from 1,500+ books as a 2018 Montaigne Finalist at Eric Hoffer Awards), Carbonfish Blues (Fomite, 2018), and Between River & Street (MoonPath Press, 2021). Shoptaw, a poetry lecturer at University of California, Berkeley, wrote, "Ecologists read the signs of unsustainability, poets give them voice, none more compellingly than Starbuck," and Michael Potts of the University of South Australia wrote in a 2017 review at Plumwood Mountain Journal, "Starbuck compels the reader to think about not just climate change itself, but also how deeply ideology and symbolism are embedded in the functioning of Western society and how unthinking acceptance of them has led to a world where money is digital. The digits on a screen are now no longer connected to any real or physical thing, but they are enough to make us acquiesce and take part in the continued rape of the planet [ . . . .] Starbuck attempts to cut through [this] in these poems." Vivian Hansen at University of Calgary wrote in a 2019 review at The Goose (official publication of ALECC, the Association for Literature, Environment, and Culture in Canada), "Starbuck's style looks outward from his grounded position as a fisherman. [. . . .] He calls for human devotion toward the wild and climate change, a devotion that intercepts the hunter and veers toward prophecy and the promise of a new vision." Bryan R. Monte wrote about Starbuck's poems in a 2017 review at Amsterdam Quarterly, "[They are] the type the world needs in order to save the planet from wide-spread, lasting ecological destruction. [ . . . .] [This] is a powerful poetry [ . . . ] worth reading and discussing-especially in writing programmes."

  • af Lee Flandreau
    382,95 kr.

From his earliest years, Lee Flandreau possessed a curiosity about animals and forests. He grew up on an Ohio farm where he took care of horses, cattle, and chickens, and collected snakes. His love for animals and wandering the woods would translate to travel in exotic places. After earning a degree in Earth Sciences from Miami University, which he attended on football and baseball scholarships, he spent his entire career with an industrial equipment manufacturer. The last twenty years, in charge of all international operations, he traveled throughout the industrial countries of the world. By 1990, the year this true story unfolded, he had taken seven safaris in Africa and loved them all. He has taken three more since. The Amazon and its vast unknowns also appealed to his sense of adventure. He found a friend with similar fascinations, and Bill and Lee researched a private river tour of Amazonia, to begin in Puerto Maldonado, Peru-a town they could find on few maps. But, once they arrived there, adventure quickly morphed into dread and doubts that they would ever again see civilization. Nothing they had expected when booking this trip materialized: The large, comfy boat described by the tour director turned out to be only a cramped, open peke-peke canoe with no space to store two-weeks' worth of supplies. Their jumping-off place had no electricity, no phones, no English-speaking people. Their recommended captain and guide spoke no language they could understand. In the midst of the jungle a week into the trip, the captain ignored Lee's demands to return to their starting place. Throughout it all, Lee's sense of humor made their dire dilemma seem almost comical. But it couldn't save them.Would they ever get back to Puerto Maldonado? Even if they did, would they ever find civilization when no roads existed and the airstrip gouged into the jungle offered no scheduled flights? Their most troubling question: Will we succumb to our fate, finding NO WAY OUT?
