This book explores how the English rural has been represented in contemporary theatre and performance. Exploring a range of plays, forms, and contexts of theatre production, Representing the Rural celebrates the lively engagement with rurality on English stages since 2000, constituting the first full study of theatrical representations of rural life. Interdisciplinary in its approach, this book draws on political philosophy and cultural geography in its definitions of rurality and Englishness, and works with key theoretical concepts such as nostalgia and ethnonationalism. Covering a range of perspectives from the country garden in Mike Bartlett¿s Albion to agricultural labour in Nell Leyshon¿s The Farm, the enclosure acts in D.C. Moore¿s Common to Black rural history in Testament¿s Black Men Walking, the book shows how theatre and performance can open up different ways of reading rural geographies, histories, and lives. While Representing the Rural is aimed at students and researchers of theatre and performance, its interdisciplinary scope means that it has wider appeal to other disciplines in the arts and humanities, including geography, politics, and history.

The study is aimed at reconstructing the historical process at the base of any significant theatre architecture. The modern space for the show is no longer intended as a direct derivation from classical types, but as a product of the transformation of the urban fabric in our cities. The research was conducted at the academies, state and municipal historical archives of numerous towns, in particular Rome, Milan, Mantua, Ferrara, Venice, London and Prague. All images are original. The work also includes the list of about 700 major Italian historical theatres.

This book takes the transnational history of southern Africäs liberation struggles in an innovative direction. It provides one of the first targeted studies of the manner in which the wider process of African decolonisation shaped the political struggle for control of Southern Rhodesia (colonial Zimbabwe). It offers an in-depth survey of the repercussions of pan-African developments on national-level political thought amidst one of the most seminal moments of the continent¿s history.The book draws on over a year of fieldwork in southern Africa as well as archival collections in the USA and UK to explore the seismic re-alignments that occurred in the white settler dominated territory in southern Africa as self-determination became a widely accepted international principle virtually overnight. In particular, it focuses on the impact of decolonisation struggles and/or independence in Ghana, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Malawi on Zimbabwe¿s liberation struggle. In so doing, it also offers new context on the roots of contemporary repression in Zimbabwe.

Auf der Grundlage von Theorien zu sozialen bzw. relationalen Räumen, die der bloßen Vorstellung von Raum als feste Größe, als Container, in dem sozialen Prozesse lediglich verortet werden, den Rücken kehren, soll in den Beiträgen des Bandes nach den räumlichen Praxen, den Wissensbeständen und Diskursen über Räume und damit nach den Konstitutionen von Raum gefragt werden, die in der Stadt wirksam werden und städtische Inklusions- sowie Exklusionsmechanismen produzieren.

This book deals with three different subjects: geography, social media and religion equally to discuss e-religiosity in terms of screenscapes that shaped digital socialization processes wherein the role of digital devices in general and smartphones in particular are considered crucial and critical. The spatial dimension is the primary foundation of the book wherein both space and place are discussed in digital manifestations in spatial sense. Religiosity is discussed variably in a sense of spirituality, social theories, religions and images. The book uses some illustrations to understand image politics. Image politics is quintessential in the age of digital technologies when production and reproduction of images are not restricted to business only; rather it attracts politics too and politicians often use the same to make political scores against opponents. The book covers contemporary digital discourses of e-religiosity in a sense of screenscapes that often found pivot indaily discussions across social media platforms. Screenscapes are considered as mediated technologies when contents can be accessed from different social media apps to construct or deconstruct their views, narratives, discourses, ideas, emotions, and perceptions around religious images in day-to-day activities, practices, rituals, customs, traditions, faiths and beliefs. The used illustrations exclusively map Indian religious gestures, identities, values, and rituals in digital-spatial contexts. The book discusses seven major questions and argues the same across the chapters in varied representations and interpretations: How and to what extent has the meaning of religiosity changed in the digital age? What are the dimensions of e-religiosity in India? How are digital devices (re)shaping religiosity in terms of e-religiosity? How and to what extent digital devices are negotiating with social and cultural lives? What is digital spatiality? How and to what extent does social media influence religiosity?

In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling lifechances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

Das vorliegende Jahrbuch StadtRegion 2022 thematisiert die Beziehungen zwischen Stadt und Land nicht entlang geläufiger, unhinterfragter Dichotomien. Vielmehr werden Verflechtungen, Auflösungen und Dynamisierungen derartiger dichotomer Kategorien in den Vordergrund gestellt.

The book integrates the latest scholarly literature on the entire Indian Ocean region, from East Africa to China. Issues such as India's history, India's changing status in the region, and India's cross-cultural networking over a long period are explored in this book. This book highlights the knowledge about landscapes and characteristics of the earliest hunter-gatherer lifeway in Southern Patagonia. It presents an analysis of the archaeological investigations carried out during three decades by an interdisciplinary team that involved archaeologists, anthropologists, paleontologists, geologists and specialists in pollen and diatoms. The database yielded was recovered from systematic survey and excavations from the Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphic layers of the rockshelter known as AEP-1, Piedra Museo Locality, situated in the central plateau of Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Piedra Museo is a unique place in the world of high academic interest with some of the earliest archaeological remains in the Americas. Researchers defined  two strata and several Stratigraphic units in the site based on the sedimentological and pedological characteristics. The depositional zones contain archaeological remains that are interpreted as hunting events corresponding to two main different occasions in the human colonization of the region, and a third human occupation during the Middle Holocene. Last one occurred then of the massive rockshelter roof colapse. The faunal remains led to a new approach to the palaeoenvironmental evolution of this enclosed basin. This volume describes the management of lithic raw materials and social networks from first human occupation of the Patagonian region to territorial consolidation of hunter-gatherer societies.

This open access book provides a current view on education, equity and inclusion within the lens of education for a sustainable North. The first book published by the University of the Arctic Thematic Network for Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity (Including the North: A comparative study of the policies on inclusion and equity in the circumpolar North, 2019) highlighted policies of inclusion and equity in education in national and regional contexts. This new book explores in more depth the provision of education across the north, focusing on challenges and innovations in meeting the needs of diverse learners in remote and rapidly changing contexts.While many texts address issues of equity, inclusion and diversity, they are almost all focused on the global South, and miss the lessons that can be learned from Northern regions. This book offers an extended essay on teaching and learning through various perspectives and experiences with the aim of creating a moresustainable North. It is structured around two main themes: 1) Supporting Teachers for Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom including consideration of language and identity issues, 2) Engendering community solutions to structural and geographical challenges in education in the circumpolar north.

This book defines and discusses the term "e;hidden geographies"e; in two ways: systematically and by presenting a variety of examples of the research fields and topics concerning hidden geographies, with the aim of stimulating further basic and applied research in this area. While the term is quite rarely used in the scientific literature (more often as a figure of speech than to illustrate or problematize its deeper meaning), we argue that hidden geographies are everywhere and many of them have significant impacts on (other) natural and social phenomena and processes, subsequently triggering changes, for example in landscape, economy, culture, health or quality of life.The introductory section of the book conceptualises hidden geographies and discusses cognitive geography, symbolization of space, and the hidden geographies in mystical literature. Case studies of hidden environmental geographies address soils, air pollution, coastal pollution and the allocation of an astronomical tourism site. Revealing hidden historical and sacred places is illustrated through examples of the visualisation of the subterranean mining landscape, the analysis of the historical road network and trade, border stones and historical spatial boundaries, and the monastic Carthusian space. Hidden urban geographies are discussed in terms of the urban development of an entire city, presenting the role of geography in rescuing architecture, revealing illegal urbanisation, and the quality of habitation in Roma neighbourhoods. Case studies of hidden population geographies shed light on the ageing of rural populations and the impact of spatial-demographic disparities on fertility variations. Discussions of hidden social and economic geographies problematize recent social changes and conflicts in a country, present the implementation of the fourth industrial revolution and borders as hidden obstacles in the organisation of public transport. Hidden geographies are explicitly linked to perceptions and explanations in case studies that address local responses to perceived marginalisation in a city, the solo women travellers' perceived risk and safety, and hidden geographical contexts of visible post-war landscapes.The book brings such a diversity of views, ideas and examples related to hidden geographies that can serve both to deepen their understanding and their various impacts on our lives and environment, and to attract further cross-disciplinary interest in considering hidden geographies - in research and in our every-day lives.

Die Aller, ein Nebenfluss der Weser in Norddeutschland, stellt ein interessantes Ziel fur Wassersportler dar. Die Region ist jedoch als touristische Destination bislang nicht positioniert. Der Wassertourismus als wachsendes touristisches Segment konnte Erfolg versprechen. Die Arbeit untersucht, inwiefern sich Destination Governance - neben der in der Literatur diskutierten Funktion zur Steuerung komplexer Einheiten - auch zur Bildung einer neuen Destination eignet. Ausfuhrlich widmet sich der Autor den verschiedenen Sichtweisen auf Destination Governance und erarbeitet eine umfassende eigene Definition. Das Lahntal dient mit seinen touristischen Netzwerken als Best Practice einer Fluss-Destination und als Referenz fur die Entwicklung eines Modells der Destinationsbildung aus der Perspektive der Destination Governance. Die Praxistauglichkeit des Modells wird fur den Wassertourismus entlang der Aller illustriert. Erstmals werden fur diesen Fluss komprimiert Details zu wassertouristischer Infrastruktur, den entsprechenden Netzwerken und der Nachfragesicht prasentiert. Diese bilden die Basis fur konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen zur Bildung der Destination Aller.

Der Sammelband hat zum Ziel, die vielfältigen Verflechtungen zwischen Landschaft und Tourismus aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zu beleuchten und zu reflektieren. Er stützt sich auf ein Verständnis von Landschaft als eine individuelle Konstruktion auf Grundlage erlernter gesellschaftlicher Deutungs- und Bewertungsmuster, auf Basis derer eine synthetische Zusammenschau materieller Objekte erfolgt. Alle drei Dimensionen sind veränderlich (die materielle, die individuelle und die gesellschaftliche) und über das Individuum miteinander verbunden. Die Gestaltung und Veränderung von Landschaften ist gebunden an Aushandlungsprozesse. Dabei ist wichtig, dass Landschaft nicht normativ im Sinne einer bestimmten Landschaft verstanden wird, sondern dass ein Nebeneinander von unterschiedlichen landschaftsbezogenen Konstruktionen (etwa infolge unterschiedlicher Interessen, kultureller Gebundenheiten, heimatlicher Bezugnahmen) und Repräsentationen zu Grunde gelegt wird. Schließlich beschränkt sich das Landschaftsverständnis nicht im Sinne eines ¿engen¿ Verständnisses auf klassische natur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Deutungen von materiellen Räumen, sondern folgt dem ¿weiten¿ Landschaftsverständnis, dass z.B. auch städtische Räume oder (Alt)Industrieareale unter dem Konstruktionsmodus ¿Landschaft¿ gefasst werden können.Übertragen auf den Bereich des Tourismus können verschiedene touristische Destinationen und andere touristifizierte Räume als Landschaften bezeichnet werden (z.B. die Toskana, ein hippes Stadtquartier in Barcelona, ein idyllischer Strand auf einer Insel der Karibik, ein einsamer Hiking-Trail im Hochgebirge, altindustrielle Areale und ihre Umgebungen im Ruhrgebiet oder das Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando).
