'What's needed is a revolution in how we procure, distribute and use energy. Toke boldly goes further, calling for a revolution in who gets to develop and own our renewable future' Paul Gipe, author of Wind Energy for the Rest of Us'The future of humankind depends on the choices we make about energy systems. Will Western governments go on prioritising obscene corporate profits at the expense of energy security? David Toke authoritatively demonstrates how insane that would be - and what brilliant alternatives are already available' Jonathon Porritt, author of Hope in Hell: A Decade to Confront the Climate Emergency'A vision of how, in the renewable era, shared ownership of energy could lead to a future of equality and economic security' Molly Scott Cato, Professor Emerita of Green Economics, Roehampton UniversityThis book exposes the energy crisis as an inevitable result of an industry run by and for corporate profit. Energy policy was never meant to favour sustainability or energy security - for decades, it has been shaped by corporate interests while hampering renewable alternatives. Now we suffer the consequences.Written by a leading energy expert, Energy Revolutions reveals the urgent need to radically increase state intervention, including public ownership, and deploy energy democracy for the public interest. It explores examples of energy democracy around the world, showing us how to fight back against fossil fuel interests, avoid climate catastrophe and the threat of nuclear technological dependency; transforming energy into a cheap, decentralised renewable good for all.David Toke is Reader in Energy Politics at the University of Aberdeen. He is the author of nine books, has written in many newspapers and magazines, and is the founding director of the not-for-profit organisation 100percentrenewableuk.
Species are going extinct, forests are burning, and children are worried about the future and their peers worldwide. But that is not the whole story: One Friday in 2018, a few young people joined Greta Thunberg to protest, and the global climate strike movement was born. Scientist David Fopp spent 250 Fridays with the newly formed grassroots movement. Together with activists Isabelle Axelsson and Loukina Tille, he offers an insider perspective on this fight for a globally just and sustainable society. They also turn their focus to science and our political engagement: How can research in all disciplines help with this struggle? And how can we all fight the climate crisis by transforming and deepening democracy?
They blazed new trails for people seeking a better world. These are their stories. In 1970, a group of young people chose to take their values to work at a new sort of profession. They formed the Public Interest Research Group, a nonpartisan, nonprofit voice for consumers, taxpayers, open and honest government, and the environment.Working under the renowned consumer advocate Ralph Nader, they helped prove it's possible to make real and lasting improvements in the lives of millions of Americans-and make an honest, and modest, living doing it. Now they are sharing their stories to challenge young people today and tomorrow to make the pursuit of positive social change their life's work too.
"This book is an essential reading for students, researchers and non-academic experts dealing with environmental, economic and social science aspects of the circular bioeconomy and with sustainability in general"--
A CHOICE OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLERestores China's place in forest historyThe disappearance of China's naturally occurring forests is one of the most significant environmental shifts in the country's history, one often blamed on imperial demand for lumber. China's early modern forest history is typically viewed as a centuries-long process of environmental decline, culminating in a nineteenth-century social and ecological crisis. Pushing back against this narrative of deforestation, Ian Miller charts the rise of timber plantations between about 1000 and 1700, when natural forests were replaced with anthropogenic ones. Miller demonstrates that this form of forest management generally rested on private ownership under relatively distant state oversight and taxation. He further draws on in-depth case studies of shipbuilding and imperial logging to argue that this novel landscape was not created through simple extractive pressures, but by attempts to incorporate institutional and ecological complexity into a unified imperial state.Miller uses the emergence of anthropogenic forests in south China to rethink both temporal and spatial frameworks for Chinese history and the nature of Chinese empire. Because dominant European forestry models do not neatly overlap with the non-Western world, China's history is often left out of global conversations about them; Miller's work rectifies this omission and suggests that in some ways, China's forest system may have worked better than the more familiar European institutions. The open access publication of this book was made possible by a grant from the James P. Geiss and Margaret Y. Hsu Foundation.
"This study of Japanese "forest reclamation" in Korea during the period of Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) holds the notion of conservation up for scrutiny, examining the roots of Japanese practices and ideas about the Korean landscape as well as the consequences and aftermath of the Japanese approach to "greenification" in Korea. The Japanese program for natural resource management included change in how woodland ownership rights were controlled at both the national and village level as well as efforts to change how Koreans cooked and heated their homes and to inculcate "forest love thought" among the Korean people, and culminated with an extreme increase in extraction during the Second World War. This project offers a compelling environmental approach to Korean history but also expands environmental thinking about Japan into colonized lands and contributes to broader conversations about colonial forestry globally"--
How animal conservation became a defense against cultural erasureChina today positions itself as a model of state-led environmentalism. On the country's arid rangelands, grassland conservation policies have targeted pastoralists and their animals, blamed for causing desertification. State environmentalism?in the form of grazing bans, enclosure, and resettlement?has transformed the lives of many ethnic minority herders in China's western borderlands. However, this book shows how such policies have been contested and negotiated on the ground, in the context of the state's intensifying nation-building project. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Alasha, in the far west of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Thomas White describes how ethnic Mongols have foregrounded the local breed of Bactrian camel, mobilizing ideas of heritage and resource conservation to defend pastoralism. In exploring how the greening of the Chinese state affects the entangled lives of humans and animals at the margins of the nation-state, this study is both a political biography of the Bactrian camel and an innovative work of political ecology addressing critical questions of rural livelihoods, conservation, and state power.
Was neu ist: Angsteinflößende Katastrophen-Szenarien. Was beide nicht mögen: Ideologisch geführte Debatten. Was sie mögen?
A compelling and pragmatic argument: solutions to yesterday's environmental problems reveal today's path forward. We solved planet-threatening problems before, Susan Solomon argues, and we can do it again. Solomon knows firsthand what those solutions entail. She first gained international fame as the leader of an expedition to Antarctica in 1986, making discoveries that were key to healing the damaged ozone layer. She saw a path--from scientific and public awareness to political engagement, international agreement, industry involvement, and effective action. Solomon, an atmospheric scientist and award-winning author, connects this career-defining triumph to the inside stories of other past environmental victories--against ozone depletion, smog, pesticides, and lead--to extract the essential elements of what makes change possible. The path to success begins when an environmental problem becomes both personal and perceptible to the general public. Lawmakers, diplomats, industries, and international agencies respond to popular momentum, and effective change takes place in tandem with consumer pressure when legislation and regulation yield practical solutions. Healing the planet is a long game won not by fear and panic but by the union of public, political, and regulatory pressure. Solvable is a book for anyone who has ever despaired about the climate crisis. As Solomon reminds us, doom and gloom get us nowhere, and idealism will only take us so far. The heroes in these stories range from angry mothers to gang members turned social activists, to upset Long Island birdwatchers to iconoclastic scientists (often women) to brilliant legislative craftsmen. Solomon's authoritative point of view is an inspiration, a reality check, a road map, and a much-needed dose of realism. The problems facing our planet are Solvable. Solomon shows us how.
Combining theoretical and empirical approaches, this book examines the role that international public administrations play in global environmental politics in the Anthropocene. With chapters written by leading experts in the field, this text offers fresh insight into how international bureaucracies shape global policies in the complex areas of climate change, biodiversity, and development policy. International public administrations are thus recognized as partially autonomous actors with their own interests and motivations, assuming the roles of managers, orchestrators, brokers, or attention-seekers. This comprehensive resource provides scholars and practitioners with valuable insight into environmental policymaking and how international public administrations might be transformed to better address the multiple, fundamental challenges of our century. "A passionate, provocative vision for solving our climate crisis from a young, forward-thinking conservative climate activist. Activists, politicians, and pseudo-experts have led us to believe that there are only two viable approaches to climate change: panicked doomerism or flat-out denial. Conservative climate activist Benji Backer argues that both are failing. In The Conservative Environmentalist, he proposes a new strategy for fixing the climate-while serving the American people instead of working against them. Backer makes the compelling case that conservative values are the key to climate solutions that actually work. In this book, you'll visit the country's most diverse ecosystems and consequential manufacturing hubs-from Utah coal mines and Texas oil fields to Louisiana's wetlands and Rhode Island's off-shore wind farms-witnessing the power of individual entrepreneurship and local problem-solving. You'll learn about the inspiring, under-the-radar efforts to improve Earth's ecosystems that big government Green New Dealers don't want you to know about, like partnerships between resource-rich oil and gas companies and environmental nonprofits to preserve thousands of acres of wetlands. Drawing on the most credible science, a deep understanding of local community needs, and his experience rallying politicians on the Left and Right to take action, Backer offers hope for everyone who cares about the planet and the future of America. Fascinating, clear-headed, and full of surprises, this book is the fresh approach we need to create a sustainable future for America and the world"--
Despite frequent protests and abounding discussions about the subject, climate action measures to counter human-made climate change have so far remained largely ineffective. By identifying profound climate-cultural differences, Sarah Kessler offers an explanation to this issue and shows that conventional assumptions of an implicit consensus on the need to prioritise climate action should be reconsidered. She uncovers climate-cultural variations in (implicit and explicit) denial of climate change and thus challenges existing approaches that treat the German public as a unified entity waiting to be activated by the right kind of rationally convincing information.
Men hvordan?
"This book explains the science and engineering of energy to help everyone understand and compare current and future advances in renewable energy, providing the context to critically examine the different technologies that are competing in a fast-evolving engineering, political, and economic landscape, to help drive the renewable energy transition"--
