"While its national parks are widely viewed as "America's best idea," and are both popular and noncontroversial in the United States, the establishment and history of almost every national park has been characterized by conflict over competing claims to land, history, knowledge, and economic interests. American presidents stake their claims to environmentalism, their assertions of a singular national history, and their definitions of a unified national identity on the parks, and often do so inside the parks themselves. Like any major area of public policy, however, the fissures present in debates over the national parks also represent important fracture lines in the public understanding of the meaning of "America" and of individual claims to citizenship. The park system, in other words, does a lot of political work for both presidents and the mass public, even though much of that work goes largely unnoticed. This book explores that political work, focusing on national origins and the dispossession of Indigenous peoples, monuments to the national past, heritage and the assertion of a national narrative, environmentalism and natural resources, and the exploitation of the national landscape for economic gain"--

For most people, planet Earth's icy parts remain out of sight and out of mind. Yet it is the melting of ice that will both raise sea level and warm the climate further by reducing the white surfaces that reflect solar energy back into space. In effect, our icy places act as the world's refrigerator, helping to keep our climate relatively cool. The Icy Planet lays out carbon dioxide's role as the control knob of our climate over the past 1000 million years, then explores what is happening to ice and snow in Antarctica, the Arctic and the high mountains.

'Engaging, rich and nuanced, this book exposes the deep dilemmas facing this Arctic archipelago. A must for anyone with an interest in the challenges of a melting world. Ethnography at its best' Marianne E. Lien, Professor, University of Oslo'Rich and deeply textured ... Zdenka Sokolí¿ková demonstrates how the logic of extraction intersects awkwardly with community, environment, geopolitics and sustainability' Klaus Dodds, Professor, Royal Holloway University of London'Lucidly captures the dilemmas of maintaining community in the world's northernmost settlement, where climate change is particularly evident. Highly recommended!' Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard, Professor, University of BergenLongyearbyen in the Arctic is the world's northernmost settlement. Here, climate change is happening fast. It is clearly sensed by the locals; with higher temperatures, more rain and permafrost thaw. At the same time, the town is shifting from state-controlled coal production to tourism, research and development. It is rapidly globalising, with numerous languages spoken, and with cruise ships sounding their horns in the harbour while planes land and take off.A small town of 2,400 inhabitants on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, Longyearbyen provides a unique view into the unmistakable relationship between global capitalism and climate change. The Paradox of Svalbard looks at local and global trends to access a deep understanding of the effects of tourism, immigration and labour on the trajectory of the climate crisis, and what can be done to reverse it.Zdenka Sokolí¿ková is a researcher at the University of Hradec Králové, Czechia, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Her research in Longyearbyen was hosted by the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo, Norway.

"Hot bravely takes aim at perhaps the greatest climate threat of all: apathy." ? Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation "Hertsgaard's answers . . . are lucid, realistic, and offer reason for hope." ? Christian Science Monitor For twenty years, Mark Hertsgaard has investigated global warming as a journalist, but the full truth did not hit home until he became a father and, soon thereafter, learned that climate change was bound to worsen for decades to come. Hertsgaard's daughter is part of what he has dubbed "Generation Hot" ? the two billion young people worldwide who will spend the rest of their lives coping with climate disruption. Drawing on reporting from around the world, Hot is a call to action that injects hope and solutions into a debate characterized by doom and gloom and offers a blueprint for how all of us ? parents, communities, countries ? can navigate an unavoidable new era. "[Hot's] urgent message is one that citizens and governments cannot afford to ignore." ? Boston Globe

"A Beachcomber's Journal" is a photographic guide to a large collection of items, most of which have been found around the coastline in Monifieth, Angus, Scotland. It explores the history and origins of these finds as well as highlighting the environmental impact of marine pollution. It also provides a window into the past 100 years or so of what we ate and drank and reflects upon the changing tastes throughout the decades. The finds are from 2018 through to early 2022 and are grouped into types. It covers the effects on the marine environment in particular of the Covid 19 Pandemic from lockdown in early 2020 when the world became a much quieter place through to 2022 when freedoms were gradually restored and life began to be more "normal ". Once the most severe travel restrictions were lifted, there was a huge influx of visitors to what had previously been quiet beaches and a noticeable effect on the environment. This book raises awareness of what history literally lies beneath our feet as well as appreciating the natural beauty to be found on our beaches. We can all play our part in helping to protect the environment, both for marine life and for future generations.
