When Sir Tim Berners-Lee first proposed the foundations of the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989, his manager called it "vague, but exciting." How things have changed since then! Twenty-six years later, Berners-Lee won the ACM Turing Award "for inventing the World Wide Web, the first Web browser, and the fundamental protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale." This book is a compilation of articles on the original ideas of a true visionary and the subsequent research and development work he has led, helping to realize the Web's full potential. It is intended for readers interested in the Web's original technical development, how it has changed over time, and the social impacts of the Web as steered by Berners-Lee since the very beginning. The book covers Berners-Lee's development of the key protocols, naming schemes, and markup languages that led to his "world wide web" program and ultimately to the Web as we know it today. His early efforts were refined as Web technology spread around the world, and he was further guided by the work of the World Wide Web Consortium, which he founded and still directs. He was instrumental in the conceptualization and realization of the Semantic Web, a field that is gaining momentum in the age of big data and knowledge graphs; was a driving force for the field of Web Science, a new and growing research area dedicated to the study of both the engineering and the impacts of the Web; and he continues to innovate through his research work at MIT on open and decentralized information. Berners-Lee is also known for his contributions to keeping the Web open and ubiquitous via his work with the World Wide Web Foundation, the UK's Open Data Institute and his recent call for a crowdsourced magna carta for the Web. This book will help the reader to understand how Sir Tim's invention of the World Wide Web has revolutionized not just Computer Science, but global society itself.

The Schrems rulings, named after Austrian activist Maximilian Schrems who filed a complaint against hi-tech giant Facebook in 2013, are two measures adopted by the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the overseas transfer of European citizens' personal data. The first 2015 ruling determines the invalidation of the Safe Harbor international agreement in force since 2000 between Europe and the United States of America. The second ruling in 2020 has a similar outcome with the invalidation of the new international Privacy Shield agreement signed in 2016.The two Schrems rulings, in addition to their obvious impact on the transfer of personal data overseas, also have political significance and should become an occasion for reflection: the rapid pace of technological evolution and globalization have demonstrated the importance of ensuring the European Union's technological and digital sovereignty; the storage and processing of data within European borders can become a lever for choosing European providers over U.S. operators for whom the necessary requirements would make overseas transfer disadvantageous.

"The Internet of today is a far cry from its early promise of a decentralized, democratic network of creativity and innovation. In the past decade, the Internet has fallen under the control of a tiny group of massive companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook. In Read Write Own, tech visionary Chris Dixon argues that the dream of an open network for fostering creativity and entrepreneurship doesn't have to die, and that in fact it can, and must, be saved with blockchain networks, which he vitally separates from the currency-based speculation that it is unfortunately lumped together with - a distinction he calls "The Computer vs The Casino". With lucid and compelling prose - and drawing from his first-hand observations, mental models, and experiences over a 25-year career in the Internet industry - Dixon shows how the Internet has undergone three distinct eras, bringing us to the critical moment we're in today. The first act was the "read era," lasting from 1990 to 2005, in which early Internet networks democratized information. In the "read-write era," 2006-2020, corporate networks democratized publishing. And we are now entering the "read-write-own era," sometimes called web3, in which blockchain networks have begun to democratize ownership, granting power and economic benefits to the participants in the network--not just to massive corporations"--

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables autonomous, predictive, and real-time sensing and monitoring of things without human intervention. As connected devices have proliferated, so has the need to transmit and receive data, consolidate and evaluate it, and respond to events. IoT solutions connect machines, sensors, and control systems to speed up contemporary industrial manufacturing. Its Predictive Maintenance, Statistical Evaluation, and Measuring may increase system reliability.IoT links and organizes a wide network of devices and intelligent entities, enabling real-time communication between physical things through any Internet-connected network or service. Smart objects identify, communicate, and make choices, accessing data from other items. The Internet is still strong because it links individuals to actual objects and enables them to communicate in real time. The evolution of IoT began with landline phones, radios, and TVs, which were one-way experiences. The 1980s saw the development of Atari and Commodore home computers and IBM PCs, which improved the efficiency of machines in connecting to the outside world. However, slow dial-up rates and infrastructure made connecting a new concept.A smart object network may employ embedded sensors and actuators to observe, feel, record, share, and react to various types of data. The concept of IoT has evolved since 2009, with the goal of reducing waste, loss, and costs by allowing computers to know everything there is to know about things.

For the first time in hundreds of years, because of the web, the role of the typographer has changed. We no longer decide; we suggest. We no longer simply choose typefaces, font sizes, line spacing, and margins; we prepare and instruct text to make those choices for itself. In this book, Tim Brown illuminates the complex, beautiful world of typesetting-arguably the most important part of typography because it forms the backbone of the reading experience-and shows us how to parry the inevitable pressures that arise when we can no longer predict how, and where, our text will be read.

Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,5, , language: English, abstract: The main objective of this study is the empirical analysis of the evaluation and comparison of dynamic routing protocols regarding their stability and reliability. An especially close look will be paid to EIGRP, OSPF, and RIP; RIP (Routing Information Protocol) being one of the oldest routing protocols still in service. A routing protocol is a protocol which is responsible to determine how routers communicate with each other and forward packets through an optimal path, travelling from source node to destination node. Each routing protocols performs in different ways. They have their own architecture, route to follow and sometimes even delays in packets. OSPF builds a database of routes to its neighbors, using an algorithm to calculate the best possible path. EIGRP is a vector routing protocol that is used on a computer network to help automate routing decisions and configuration. The author of this text is not a native English speaker. At the end of 2019, Aron Lee decided to live 2020 without access to the internet. He would interact with the world in what we have already come to think of as the "old-fashioned" way --- taking calls and texting on a flip phone, paying bills by cheque (and receiving them by snail mail), and writing actual pen-on-paper letters to friends and family, all the while continuing his doctoral work at McGill University. Case Study from the year 2023 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), course: Security and Technology, language: English, abstract: This paper tries to answer the question, how the LA Police Department uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithms to profile criminality. Can these algorithms always be fair and impartial? In today¿s society, we are constantly surrounded by artificial intelligence, especially by algorithms that try to profile us to predict our future behaviour. These algorithms are deeply embedded in our daily lives, whether we are watching Netflix, using Amazon music or do online shopping, they try to present us with suggestions to get us more involved with the platform to spend more time there and therefore more money. But these algorithms are not only operated by business companies alone, they are also implemented with public policy providers and law enforcement agencies, like police forces.First, the author gives a detailed explanation of how these algorithms work, then he lists examples in which areas police forces might use these algorithms, such as facial recognition software and making suggestions about the sentencing of criminals. However, the paper also discusses critique of the use of technology by law enforcement. Many ascribe these algorithms a certain bias, especially racially, having mainly been trained on a dataset, which in itself is biased. The next chapter contains the author's methodology, which he then applies to his case study about the LA Police Department in the last part of his paper.
