This book investigates the use of digital technologies for social organisation during the Covid-19 pandemic, interrogating the specific relationship between digital technologies and social movements. Drawing upon Marx's theory of alienation and Antonio Gramsci's concepts concerning common-sense, good sense, hegemony and praxis, the author examines the effectiveness of digital technologies in filling the social void created by the pandemic.A series of in-depth interviews across a spectrum of areas - from community activism, mental health, trade union organisation, the creative arts, and resistance movements - reveal how digital technologies flourished during the pandemic crisis, facilitating new ways to communicate. However, the interviews also throw into sharp relief the inadequacies of digital technologies. The book challenges conventional wisdom concerning the beneficial impact of digital machines on our lives. This book will have a broad appeal to anyone researching or teaching the societal, ethical and political implications of digital technologies, particularly from a qualitative perspective. It also has relevance for a wider readership concerned about the influence of social media.

The book demonstrates an evidence-based approach to online memory practices of World War II. Network analysis is applied to reduce a massive and unreadable dataset of forum texts and user relations. Further, the results are combined with other text analysis methods, such as topic modeling and contrastive stylometric analyses. A sample of discussions from each group is read and categorized. Based on the results, the forum users¿ memory practices are labelled as empirical, conversational and conservational practices, whereby recent theoretical developments in Memory Studies are considered.

Die Tagung 2017 zum Thema ¿Digitale Literaturwissenschaft¿ behandelte in vier Sektionen die Veränderungen, die das Fach der germanistischen Literaturwissenschaft als ganzes und in einzelnen seiner Arbeitsbereiche erfahren hat, wie auch die des Gegenstands, der Literatur, selbst. Insbesondere in zwei Arbeitsfeldern sind in den letzten Jahren größere Fortschritte erzielt worden. Zum einen im Feld der digitalen Edition und Annotation literarischer Texte, zum anderen im Bereich der Textanalyse, vor allem der Untersuchung von größeren Textsammlungen. Durch diese Erweiterungen des literaturwissenschaftlichen Methodeninventars haben sich auch die Anforderungen an forschungsrelevante Institutionen, wie etwa Archive und Bibliotheken, und die Beziehungen zu ihnen einschneidend verändert.

This book provides the opportunity to explore the variety of meanings, undertones and contextual connotations that currently pertain to the expressions of "virtual (or digital) restoration" and "reconstruction".The book focuses on the latest applications of virtual restoration and reconstruction in different areas of Cultural Heritage through the presentation and discussion of several case studies. The goal is to provide a broad perspective on the subject.The sample presented in this book has been indeed selected and evaluated referring to different disciplinary fields such as archaeology, architecture, and conservation while encompassing a variety of cultural and chronological contexts.

This book explores how social networking platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp ¿accidentally¿ enable and nurture the creation of digital afterlives, and, importantly, the effect this digital inheritance has on the bereaved. Debra J. Bassett offers a holistic exploration of this phenomenon and presents qualitative data from three groups of participants: service providers, digital creators, and digital inheritors. For the bereaved, loss of data, lack of control, or digital obsolescence can lead to a second loss, and this book introduces the theory of ¿the fear of second loss¿. Bassett argues that digital afterlives challenge and disrupt existing grief theories, suggesting how these theories might be expanded to accommodate digital inheritance.This interdisciplinary book will be of interest to sociologists, cyber psychologists, philosophers, death scholars, and grief counsellors. This edited collection provides an alternative discourse on cities evolving with physically and virtually networked communities¿the ¿digital polis¿¿and offers a variety of perspectives from the humanities, media studies, geography, architecture, and urban studies. As an emergent concept that encompasses research and practice, the digital polis is oriented toward a counter-mapping of the digital cityscape beyond policing and gatekeeping in physical and virtual gated communities. Considering the digital polis as offering potential for active support of socially just and politically inclusive urban circumstances in ways that mirror the Greek polis, our attention is drawn towards the interweaving of the development of digital technology, urban space, and social dynamics. The four parts of this book address the formation of technosocial subjectivity, real-and-virtual combined urbanity, the spatial dimensions of digital exclusion and inclusion, and the prospect of emancipatoryand empowering digital citizens. Individual chapters cover varied topics on digital feminism, data activism, networked individualism, digital commons, real-virtual communalism, the post-family imagination, digital fortress cities, rights to the smart city, online foodscapes, and open-source urbanism across the globe. Contributors explore the following questions: what developments can be found over recent decades in both physical and virtual communities such as cyberspace, and what will our urban future be like? What is the ¿digital polis¿ and what kinds of new subjectivity does it produce? How does digital technology, as well as its virtuality, reshape the city and our spatial awareness of it? This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling, ICIDS 2022, held in Santa Cruz, CA, USA, in December 2022.The 30 full papers and 10 short papers, presented together with 17 posters and demos, were carefully reviewed and selected from 79 submissions.

This volume constitutes selected and revised papers presented during the Second International Conference on Trandisciplinary Multispectral Modelling and Cooperation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, TMM_CH 2021, held in Athens, Greece, in December 2021. The 17 full papers and 6 short papers presented in ths volume were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 310 submissions. This edited book focuses on speech etiquette, examining the rules that govern communication in various online communities: professional, female, and ethnospecific. The contributors analyze online communication in the Slavic languages Russian, Slovak, Polish, and Belarusian, showing how the concept of speech etiquette differs from the concept of politeness, although both reflect the relationship between people in interaction. Online communities are united on the basis of common informative or phatic illocutions among their participants, and their speech etiquette is manifested in stable forms of conducting discussions - stimulating and responding. Each group has its own ideas of unacceptable speech behavior and approaches to sanitation, and the rules of speech etiquette in each group determine the degree of rapport and distancing between the participants in discourse. The chapters in this book explore how rapport and distance are established through acts such as showing attention to the addressee and increasing his or her communicative status; reducing or increasing the illocutionary power of evaluations and motivations; and evaluating one's own or someone else's speech. The volume will be of interest to researchers studying online communication in such diverse fields as linguistics, sociology, anthropology, programming, and media studies.

Die Topic-informierte Diskursanalyse ist ein Mixed-Methods-Verfahren, das Methoden des Text-Mining mit der Wissenssoziologischen Diskursanalyse verbindet, um Diskurstransformationen im Zeitverlauf zu analysieren. Im ersten Teil wird das Verfahren entwickelt und der epistemologische, theoretische, methodologische und methodische Aufbau erläutert. Im zweiten Teil wird das Verfahren am Beispiel der Volkszählungs- und Zensusdebatte in Deutschland in den Jahren 1982-2020 angewendet und veranschaulicht.
