Can design cater to a diverse society? How does it respond to the disparate demands of the peopleusing it? Debates about inclusion and participation have been an important part of the designdiscourse since at least the 1980s. Contemporary design approaches expand on the conceptsof Universal Design and Design for All, reinterpreting them in a community-based, participatorydesign practice.Design for All? Inclusive Design Today gathers together a variety of recent projects, initiatives, and concepts drawn from different design disciplines, and sets up a dialogue with teachers andresearchers who are active on the international scene to discuss them for the first time. Dealingwith a range of different voices in inclusive design strategies can be seen as part of a paradigmshift that radically questions society's normative values: Can design also make a society fairer?Evelyn Steiner, dipl. Arch. ETH / MA Art History, works as an independent curator, journalist, andmoderator. Sara Zeller did her doctorate in art history and is a curator at the Museum fü r Ge-staltung Zürich.

The essence of Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color in a format that engages learners of all ages and levels and encourages a hands-on approach
Recent years have seen a decline in craft and creative education in schools and a shift from practical to theoretical learning models in higher education. Young people are leaving school with no idea that craft-based careers are even possible, and graduates of craft-based degree courses are entering the workplace with so few hand skills that their employers must train them from scratch. Where did the idea come from that white-collar work should be rewarded more with money and status than that of a blue-collar worker? Intelligent Hands looks at this phenomenon, the historical precedents that led us here and why hand skills are crucial in education and for lifelong learning. The authors are on a mission to enlighten the uninitiated and persuade the naysayers who dismiss craft as no more than a nice hobby or believe that doing things with your hands is for those who can't use their heads. And for the converted, we offer more grist to your mills, ammunition for funding applications, inspiration for those who plan school curricula and further reading for your specialty. Intelligent Hands brings existing research and information together in an accessible format for those for those who don't have time to trawl through all the information that is already out there. With a brief look at the history of practical education, we have collated some of the research that has been done in disparate fields to show that combining physical ways of learning with the conceptual in education is the way forward. We include the personal stories of ten people who have discovered that working with their hands has improved their quality of life. Through the three sections of the book, we look at how physical laboring became separated from academic study, how we became divorced from the materials that surround us and the important role that the crafts and creativity play in education, not just for the lower streams, but for everyone. In short, how making is a skill for life.

This edited collection offers global perspectives on the transverse, boundary-blurring possibilities of community arts education. Invoking 'transversality' as an overarching theoretical framework and a methodological structure, 55 contributors - community professionals, scholars, artists, educators and activists from sixteen countries - offer studies and practical cases exploring the complexities of community arts education at all levels. Such complexities include challenges created by globalizing phenomena such as the COVID-19 pandemic; ongoing efforts to achieve justice for Indigenous peoples; continuing movement of immigrants and refugees; growing recognition of issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace; and the increasing impact of grassroot movements and organizations. Chapters are grouped into four thematic clusters - Connections, Practices, Spaces and Relations - that map these and other intersecting assemblages of transversality. Thinking transversally about community art education not only shifts our understanding of knowledge from a passive construct to an active component of social life but redefines art education as a distinctive practice emerging from the complex relationships that form community.
