Once back in school she finds out that one of her teacher's and his girl friend has pulled a classic jewel theft. Her grandfather is called in on the case. The perpetrators try to ransom the jewels and ask for Phyllis to make the exchange.

This book is a prequel to Warriors of the Blood Feather and highlights Rear Admiral Mathew Douglas as a young officer serving in Naval Intelligence during the cold war days. Matt Douglas is recruited to serve as a technical support technician. He builds, installs and maintains "bugs". One evening he is pressed into service saving the life of a Russian defector. He reluctantly finds himself becoming more and more often used in the role of a field agent. Matt eventually finds himself serving with a special unit made up of CIA, FBI and U. S. Marshals during the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention. The unit uncovers a Russian plot to supply guns to the convention protesters.

In the fourth book of the series Phyllis is back in California visiting her Uncle Henry and Benjamin when the Devil's Scepter is stolen from Uncle Henry's museum. Philip Clark is hired by the insurance company to recover it. Once he arrives in southern California the bodies begin to pile up and the chase is on as they consider rival demonic cults as their suspects. This is the third book in the series related to the Phyllis Clark and the Devil's Scepter.
