The author claims to be neither a scholar nor a theologian, but this book demonstrates that, in spite of their erudition, many scholarly theologians have not really understood what they were at. What we believe matters and and should be firmly supported by evidence. Too many religious claims lack that reliable evidence.
There are many people who do not know what they may safely believe, as many of the claims made by theologians and their creeds seem unrealistic to them. This book is intended to show what may be believed reliably; it does this by examining the Gospel according to John and finding well-founded accounts of what happened.
It matters whether we believe in God or not. No one can prove that there isn't a god and no one can prove that there is. However we can find signposts. This book looks for them and claims to have identified them.
