The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It is often considered to be, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work. It is also among the highest selling books of all time. The writing of the work was completed in 1844. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from the plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815-1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. L'histoire politique racontée dans La guerre des femmes paraît simple: en 1650, la reine Anne d'Autriche et Mazarin font emprisonner le prince de Condé. The Three Musketeers: Illustrated is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, first serialized in March-July 1844. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all" ("un pour tous, tous pour un"), a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan. Alexandre Dumas ( born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, 24 July 1802 - 5 December 1870) was a French writer, best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Translated into nearly 100 languages, these have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne were originally published as serials. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century for nearly 200 films. Dumas' last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by a scholar and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange was the son of Sir James Kirkcaldy, Lord High Treasurer under James V. His mother was Janet Melville sister of the five Melville brother who played such a prominent part as civil servants and diplomats during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots. He first came to notice in 1546 during the conspiracy against Cardinal David Bethune, when a group of Fife lairds entered the castle at St Andrews bent on killing him.

Ce roman s'attache à certaines personnalités révolutionnaires, comme Maximilien de Robespierre, Jean-Paul Marat, Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, comte de Mirabeau, mais met également en scène des personnages de fiction tels que le comte Olivier de Charny, amoureux de la reine Marie-Antoinette d'Autriche qui néglige sa jeune femme, Andrée, la comtesse de Charny qui donne son titre au roman. Son cadet, le vicomte Isidore de Charny, seigneur de Boursonnes, est amoureux de Catherine Billot dont il a un fils, le jeune Isidore. Le père de Catherine Billot, sans-culotte fidèle aux idées révolutionnaires, ne pardonne pas à sa fille son amour pour un aristocrate et tente d'assassiner le vicomte de Charny. Isidore de Charny trouve la mort pendant la fuite de Varennes en 1791. La comtesse de Charny retrouve le fils illégitime qu'elle a eu dans des circonstances terribles et finit par se faire aimer de son mari. Leur bonheur dure peu. Le comte est abattu au cours des combats de la Journée du 10 août 1792. Andrée est arrêtée et trouve la mort à la prison de l'Abbaye au cours des massacres de septembre 1792.
