En 1846, vivait à Paris, sur les hauteurs de la place du Panthéon, un jeune peintre d'une laideur si rare, que ses camarades l'avaient surnommé Quasimodo. Il avait le nez long et gros, les cheveux crépus, les yeux petits et enfoncés sous l'arcade sourcilière, la bouche fendue jusqu'aux oreilles, et le menton pointu. Sa taille était droite, ses bras longs et nerveux, ses mains larges et fortes, et ses pieds d'une longueur excessive. Le beau n'est pas toujours camarade du bon. Quasidomo était la douceur même. Il était instruit, habile dans son art, plein d'esprit, de courage, et amoureux de la gloire. Un seul défaut déparait ses belles qualités et le rendait insupportable à lui-même. C'était une tristesse incurable dont il ne disait le secret à personne. Il aimait la beauté avec une passion que Phidias, Raphaël et Titien seuls ont connue, et il ne pouvait se regarder dans une glace sans frémir. Presque tous les hommes sont laids, il faut l'avouer; mais l'habitude, la vanité, l'ignorance des vrais principes de la beauté physique, le plaisir qu'on éprouve à se tromper soi-même, leur cachent ordinairement cette cruelle infirmité...

... Si mon père était silencieux, ma mère en revanche parlait pour lui, pour elle, et pour toute la famille. Comme elle avait le verbe haut et la voix forte, on l'entendait de tout le voisinage; mais ses gestes étaient encore plus prompts que ses paroles, et d'un revers de main elle rétablissait partout l'ordre et la paix. Sa main était, révérence parler, comme un vrai magasin de tapes, et la clef était toujours sur la porte du magasin. Au premier mot que nous disions de travers, mes soeurs et moi, la pauvre chère femme (que le bon Dieu ait son âme en son saint paradis!) nous choisissait l'une de ses plus belles gifles et nous l'appliquait sur la joue. Et croyez bien, madame, que nous n'avions pas envie de rire, car ses mains, endurcies par le travail, avaient la pesanteur de deux battoirs. Du reste, bonne femme, qui pleurait comme une Madeleine les jours d'enterrement, et qui aurait donné pour mon père et pour nous son sang et sa vie; mais quant à crier, battre et se disputer avec ses voisins, elle n'y aurait pas renoncé pour un empire...
